Subject: [Action Required] Important AWS Account Notice

As previously communicated on 2025-09-30 in an email we sent at 23:45 UTC while you were on annual leave, AWS will be sunsetting all Amazon ElasticJizzWailer (EJW) nodes, starting yesterday. Please migrate your workloads to Amazon CloudFunk™, which is conceptually and morally incompatible with the legacy YAML-based EJW configuration language.

Please use the CloudFunk Pricing Confabulator[1] briefly and unsuccessfully, then hit the button and hope that your budget alerts catch anything egregious. Please also stare hopelessly at the Required IAM Roles[2] documentation before granting wildly over-broad permissions in the hope that the API calls start working.

@dalias every single engineer I've seen talking about this has immediately identified this attack, so it's guaranteed that this will be exploited right away if it goes ahead (and also that Amazon absolutely knows about it)

@dalias exactly. They could also have trivially made wishlists with that setting private, which would at least limit the immediate harm, but that doesn't goose the wishlist metrics

RE: @jneen@unstable.systems

I think this gets at the idea that a decent chunk of the popularity of LLMs among many software engineers is in some way a reaction to how terrible our tools are. We largely code like we're still using punched cards, so having something that'll handle the mechanics of making holes with minimal setup is always going to be attractive.

One interesting thing about cross-border rail travel is getting an IMSI catcher notification pretty much directly on the border between each pair of Germany, Belgium, France, and the UK. But maybe there's an innocent explanation for that?

@cyningstan Thanks! I did try searching for compatibility info, but I suppose running third-party software was a fairly niche thing on top of an already niche platform (until it became Symbian). Still, I'll have to try it in the emulator!

@Fiona@blahaj.zone @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I thought the regulations require it to be as easy to decline as to accept, but only that changing your mind later should be straightforward – that includes deciding to accept non-essential cookies later. I’ve not seen many decisions from regulators about what making changing your mind ‘straightforward’ is, but generally footer links on all pages and communication, or contact details on other communication, seems to be enough.

@tuftyindigo@meow.social I agree that other fields are often in a much worse way, tooling-wise! I guess I was more thinking about the fact that the standard text editor and terminal emulator combo has stayed fairly static for decades. And where there have been features layered on top, I watch many software engineers completely bypass them, either because they require an upfront time investment to set up and they don't feel capable of taking that time, or just because they've learnt one way to do something and now don't want to change it. Asking Claude if the tests pass is probably going to be slower than just having them auto run on save, but it doesn't have the upfront hurdle of having to figure out how to make that happen
