Hello. I am a totally blind tech nerd, in both my personal and professional lives.
I enjoy tinkering with computer software and hardware, coding, databases, client/server administration, diagnostics and technical support, and all the rest of that jazz.
I administrate servers around the globe for database and web application hosting, VoIP telephony and amateur radio communications. I also do backend database administration and web application programming.
Other interests include music, documentaries, biology, criminology, SciFi, being silly, and pondering the meaning of life.

I must say folks, for screen reader users specifically, and often times many other groups as well, the command line is, and always was, the most rock-solid accessibility tool. If you've got a system of knowing and quickly retrieving commands and their sequences, be that from your head, a lookup database, the internet, provided its still there, you can do anything the software allows. Full stop. There is nothing preventing you from using any feature that the environment is programmed to allow, and often times, stuff it does not allow, to occur. There is nothing to click, nothing to do but read and write text. If you've got a screen reader you know well, and a good comfortable keyboard, and a good reference and understanding, you can do anything. This is why I choose Mikrotik. I can learn their CLI. I can read their insanely dense wall of text manual. Its all there. It is not an app that may get me what I need in five clicks today, and then all of a sudden shows me a blank screen tomorrow. So long as the CLI is maintained and updated, the rest is text, and absolutely nothing more than that. Plane and simple text. Learn it if you don't know it. Just pick up any CLI or API. Just learn it, and find products that make use of it. There are a lot more coming, all thanks to this new fangled AI thing.

@Marconius Yes! Do it! And if you're making a visual presentation there, also be sure to slip in a slide or two at random places in your deck that simply show a black screen. Then come up with some clever talk over. Act like your machine is broken, the projector is broken, the whatever reason the slide is showing nothing. Then, after pretending to struggle for five minutes with it, switch to the next slide, which will be a screen full of buttons with the actual words "unlabelled button" on them. Act all surprised that you even got the next slide to work, and then even more surprised at who ruined your slides, and how in the hell you're supposed to navigate this sea of unlabelled buttons. Then, after pretending to be frustrated at this outcome, and wasting the audiences time, switch to a new slide that says "the life of a disabled user: Accessibility barriers that cause real barriers. It might ruin your presentation reputation, by those who are too inept to get the demonstration, but there's nothing like showing a demo of the real thing in action either.

Since the peripheral known as a mouse exists, and it sits next to a keyboard, the keyboard should be called the catboard, so it can eat the mouse, and all it's UI implications.

I've been enjoying spending time with my special person virtually. The distance makes it difficult at times, but we're planning a visit in May. As for Easter, I was a bit uncertain as to her favourite things, and Amazon didn't have the one thing I was sure of, but I found something else that she enjoys, and she will be getting it, if a couple days late. But its the effort and thought that count. As for me, I'm going to see both sides of the family for dinners, both Saturday and Sunday.

Seriously, if Mastodon would get their shit together, and finally, once and for all, fixed the "I don't know about you, so you don't exist" problem, when it comes to instances talking to each other regarding accounts, it would probably have more users.

@treuss TL.DR: Read through all release notes and perform all steps unique to each set of notes, as well as all steps common to all release notes. You can do a direct upgrade, but only if all of the release notes for each upgrade shows that the steps are the same. The real big thing is pre and post migrations. You must do these for most anything major. However, some versions require extra steps beyond these, and they would need to be completed during the upgrade to the final target release, even if they do not apply to that release. For example, a while ago, some secrets were required to be added to the env.production file. Many mastoadmins got caught here, as they would have skipped the version requiring these keys added, and then they would not have seen this requirement in the final release notes of the target version they were upgrading to, and thus would have resulted in a broken installation until this step was completed.

@BorrisInABox I doubt that is the case, but it does bring up a good point for all to consider, myself included, that those who truly care will stick around, those who don't, won't. And its better for all concerned not to worry about it so much.

@mastodonmigration @FediTips Guilty until prooven innocent, in the court of society. No one knows what truly happened, the story certainly is scant on details, as that's usually how unresolved legal proceedings are. No one but this person knows what they did, and why. Most I can say is be aware, but reserve judgement. Perhaps refrain from engaging in financial dealings with the person and their instance until certainty of legal judgement is rendored, but don't make his life even more of a living hell.

@ablade@mastodon.stickbear.me I don't have the name of a lawyer, but writing to offer my support. I do hope there is some sort of rental increase cap law in your state, of which he cannot legally go beyond. That is likely the only way you will legally be able to fight this and win. Alternatively, there is hopefully a legal landloard and tenant tribunal of some form to whom you may register a complaint, and while those proceedings are in process, your eviction may not be enforceable until they are resolved in either parties favour. All these things are true in Ontario, Canada, which means absolutely nothing in your case, but hopefully opens the door to possibilities in your state. Hoping for the best here.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social You're not wrong buddy. All economic data of situations that have developed like this points to an inevitable crash. Right now, its in the crackle phase. Things will then begin to snap, and then things will pop. Just like Rice Crispies, although, not exactly in the same order as Rice Crispies, LOL. The key is to be smart by diversifying, and remaining calm. Its the panic buying and firesales that bring down economies.

@simon@procrastodon.net That's a lot of TV equipment. I can't say I can relate in any way on that front, but what I can relate to is not caring for any of the multitude of inconsistent interfaces and user experiences across a multitude of platforms. I have multiple collections of things I got from sources who got them from their sources, and thus Winamp, a pair of Corsair HS80 headphones, or my mixing console and studio monitors do just fine for media consumption for me. When mobile, iPhone and some sort of media player that supports network playback over aVPN connection, and that's all I really need and want.

Time to make a max catchup contribution to triple those funds with the Canada Disability Savings Grant, and then invest into a slumping market, LOL. But gotta start somewhere, sometime.

@simon @menelion The explanation is money. Apple and Google have been in bed since Safari debuted on iPhone. It is why Google is Safari's default search engine. So they have the friendliest of contracts with each other, and likely do this as a matter of coarse. Doesn't make it right, but it explains everything.
