To celebrate David Attenborough's 100th birthday I took myself in a small botanical expedition around my neighborhood. It's always fun to spot plants growing between tiles and next to lamp posts and realise how many different species even a paved over bit of residential area supports.

I'm wearing the same as yesterday for me made May, so let me show you the clothes I just made for my nasty old flakey headphones. Not exactly high couture, but it'll keep the blue flakes out of my hair and is thin enough not to dampen the sound.

Let's fix this puny little pocket. To the seam ripper! Step 1: unpick the bottom of the pocket and a few cm of the side seam. (I find seam ripping relaxing and meditative, but you could totally just cut it open, we're adding extra fabric anyway. Not the side seam though, that really needs to be unpicked.)(You might not need to unpick the side seam at all, it depends on the construction of the pocket.) #sewing #FuckThePatriarchy #pockets

And that's it! Your pants are now ready to face the world again. The trickiest bit is to make sure not to catch extra bits of fabric and create creases (or even sew shut your pants), but if you do, there's always the trusted seamripper to cut the stitches and try again. Just take your time and it'll be fine. 5/5 #sewing #mending #MakeDoAndMend

Today for me made May I wore the Bonnie top from fibre mood (which i think looks very good on me, but which I hardly ever wear because the sleeves are too short - I found out with this top I really don't like 'bracelet length'), the wide leg pants from Peppermint Magazine ( modified to barrel legs) the fibre mood Drew jacket again, and the Buckley tote from Elbe textiles.
(Yesterday was the same as the day before)

Oh, just in case you now think I'm some kind of sewing wizard, here's some less invisible examples ,😁 Not exactly pants to wear to work or something, but good enough for around the house and working in the garden. (I do go out on public in those green ones, I have no shame. I'm kind of counting on people being too polite to stare at my butt too much.) #sewing #mending #MakeDoAndMend

Step 10: ooh look at that nice big pocket! With all the raw edges nicely enclosed. Now I just have to close the side seam again and we're done! (Shall I go and find matching yarn for this bit of stitching visible on the outside? Nah.) #sewing #pockets

The hemming tape may claim that it's a durable solution, but that's a lie. We need to reinforce this patch or it'll just drop off in no time. Using your sewing machine (or needle and thread if you're patient and have strong fingers), sew up and down the patch several times. Remember to use matching thread to your pants. This is where the reverse button of your machine will really come in handy. Up and down, left and right, just make a nice grid, catching all the edges. 4/5 #sewing #mending #MakeDoAndMend

I forgot about me made May yesterday, but fear not, i wore the same as the day before. But with a light linen knit cardi (a modified slouchy cardi from Peppermint Magazine) over it because it was a bit chilly. Today it was fibre moods Feliz dress in blue linen (and the Drew jacket during walkies). Also tried a new angle for the picture, instead of straight into the sun, squeezed between the plants. Not sure if it's an improvement.

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social well, I've repaired stuff on the road. Sewing the tear in my sleeping bag shut definitely made the rest of the camping trip easier, and temporarily fixing the pedal of my bicycle helped my reach an actual bicycle repair shop. Etc.

PS, don't forget to add seam allowances (1 or 2 cm extra fabric) or you'll end up with less deep pockets than you expected. #sewing #pockets

Not much for me made May today. Just my undies (which your not getting a picture of) and this shirt I made from a scrap of jacquard knit left over after making a cardigan. I traced an existing tee for the pattern.

Step 3: I've pinned the new pocket to the inside of the existing pocket. I've left 1/2 a cm overlap, to get a nice finish on step 5. #sewing #pockets

Step 5: more pinning. Look closely to the picture and see that the original pocket sticks out over the new pocket. I'm now folding that extra old bit over the new bit, and folding a second time and pinning to enclose all the raw edges. Next, I'll sew that down. Now I won't get loose threads tickling me, and the second sewing line adds a bit of extra strength as well. #sewing #pockets

Put the pants on a flat surface, and put first the hemming tape and the the patch on the inside on the hole. The right side of the patch facing down, towards the hole. Try to keep the edges of the hole together so less of the patch will show through. If your hole is too big, don't worry, that's why you have a patch in a matching colour. (Or not, you can use a contrasting patch for a bit of #VisibleMending.) If there's a lot of fraying, maybe trim down the edges a bit first. When everything is lined out, take a hot iron and iron the patch on. Mind you don't melt any interfacing to your iron, or you'll have to clean of nasty gunk (ask me how I know). 3/5 #sewing #mending #MakeDoAndMend

Step 6: tine to close the pocket. I've turned the pocket inside out and pinned the outer edge. So we're looking at the inside of the pocket now, sticking out to the outside of the jeans. #sewing #pockets

Step 7: sewing this bit can be a bit fiddly, so check if you caught the fabric on both sides. If you missed a bit, just seen an extra pass at that bit. Next, trim the seam allowances to slightly less than 1/2 cm, and trim away fraying and lose threads. Now, if your new pocket has curves, make little snips in those curves, but watch out and don't copy dough your sewing line. Just little snips, 1/2 cm or so apart (maybe a bit more apart on less steep curves). This will help your seam become nice and flat.

Step 8: turn your pocket back to the right side (on the inside of the jeans. Make sure to push out any corners. Pressing it may help get things nice and flat ( though I'm not bothering right now). Now sew the pocket again, a bit more than 1/2 a cm from the edge. (Also, my yarn has turned purple because I ran out of pink)

Step 2: find some fabric. I have some boring white cotton, but you can use whatever, it's now going to be visible anyway. Just make sure it's not too flimsy or too heavy. Look at what your existing pocket is made of and find something that feels the same(ish). An old sheet or ugly cotton shirt could be an excellent source of pocket materiaal. My existing pocket is one piece, folded over, so I'm going to make a folded pocket as well. If your pocket is made of two separate pieces, cut two identical pieces. I've just eyeballed a pocket shape here and drew it straight on the fabric. You could make a paper pattern piece first if you want. I'm not going to sew the pocket into the side seam except at the point where it joins the old pocket, too much effort. #sewing #pockets

I try to estimate being a small embroidery of seeing project along, which usually gets day ignored while i hoe of cycle around. Though on our last long train trip to Switzerland, i brought my knitting and actually knitted almost half a sock. (Which is now daalt ignored again while i work on shiny other projects)

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social How a garment turns out is greatly influenced by the fabric. Picking the wrong type of fabric to go with a pattern can result in a truly horrendous failure, even though both pattern and fabric on their own are perfectly fine. (The atrocious dress that thought me this has since been taken apart and the fabric used for other projects) #MakersHour
