Retired after lifetime of working in social purpose organisations. Hubby & dad of grown up kids (& elderly dog) & now grandkids

Green Party EW member & as active as health permits, systems thinker & degrowth curious. Horrified at capitalism, genocide & discrimination. Can only make sense of C21 thus: “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.” (after Gramsci) 🇵🇸 🇺🇦

@peterbrown@mastodon.scot @ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk I was really struck by a documentary I listened to a few years ago about Finland’s (extremely successful) education system Students & teachers co-design the curriculum, not around discreet subject areas but around areas the students want to explore & understand or problems they’re interested in solving and the teachers pull in the different disciplines & specialisms to enable it 150 years since Dickens & Gradgrind still runs #uk #education

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us the Grauniad was also reporting last year, when the DoH was leaning on NHS Trusts to accelerate its introduction, that frontline staff were also in revolt because the software was useless compared to what they were already using Let’s hope the backlash kills it once & for all. Then we just need Palantir extricated from the police, military and all the other aspects of government in which they have been embedded

@Lazarou @ChrisMayLA6 indeed. In this case, the inquiry (into foreign interference in British democracy) has expressly been forbidden (again) to look at one of the key causes of Putin’s Brexit 🤬

@gcvsa@mstdn.plus @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us I’d agree but the judge also barred the jury from being told of their right to acquit based on their conscience (even though it’s inscribed on an actual stone plaque in the court building), indeed demanding that a defence barrister be charged in the High Court for contempt of court for mentioning it in his closing statement (a charge now dismissed by the Appeal Court as beyond the judge’s jurisdiction) The whole thing is a show trial

@perlman@indieweb.social and just one other thought… I’ve recently moved browser to Vivaldi which, although I understand it’s built on Chrome, seems to take privacy seriously and I love using. My sense is that, as a European product, it’s becoming more popular for those wanting to escape US surveillance tech but not included in your tool - worth a look?

@perlman@indieweb.social thanks for this Totally non-tech boomer here who worries about his online privacy. No big surprises - I’m on a journey away from US corporate platforms anyway - but analysis of my score was helpful and tips for improvement really useful I also found it pretty straightforward and intuitive to use Thanks again

@hgrsd@hachyderm.io absolutely The other thing that really struck me as my kids were growing up was the ideology embedded in all the commercial birthday cards they received. Sickening gender stereotyping and deeply conservative expectations of interests as they grew year by year

The BBC has given up any pretence at being anything other than the Reform UK Broadcasting Corporation 🤬🤬🤬

@Lazarou@mastodon.social @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us we do but we also need to learn the lessons of 2017-19 and how to do what we can to immunise our movement against the establishment rearguard, which already started with the Fuerhage & Bad Enoch seeking to delegitimise Hannah’s win and lay the groundwork for more voter suppression If Reform get anywhere near power in 2029, I guarantee the Green Party will be proscribed as a terrorist organisation

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us plus ça change - whenever Caroline Lucas was defending her Brighton Pavilion seat, Labour threw kitchen sink at trying to beat her When I was growing up in a Labour household in the 60s & 70s, it was always said that nothing unites Labour like the fight against a Tory Clearly now, nothing unites Labour like the fight against a Socialist - or, indeed, anyone with a shred of principle

@AlexGallagher@mastodon.scot Zack isn’t Deputy PM Angela Rayner resigned her govt post while an HMRC inquiry looked into her affairs over a period of months. Now found to have made a genuine mistake & exonerated, she has made it clear she’s returning to frontline politics The mud rakers pointed out his error, the same error made by every boat owner on that mooring for 35 years, only brought to light by Neidle’s case law analysis. He put his hands up, admitted the mistake & immediately paid up

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us I’m speculating but having read Neidle’s hit-piece in support of the Times story and its reliance on both the minutiae of case law relating to Council Tax liability and presumptions about Zack’s living arrangements based on where his post was delivered and he was reported to do his laundry, I honestly don’t imagine for a minute it occurred to Zack that anything was amiss in his financial affairs Once it was pointed out, he held up his hands, apologised and paid up 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Julius_VD@mstdn.social …thinking we’d out-negotiate the entire continent without doing any preparation or having any agreed position on what we wanted other than to have our cake and eat it The EU is desperate for democratic reform - as is the UK - and we should be walking the road together. Time to revive the Delors vision of a federal Europe comprising largely autonomous regions & the withering of the nation state in my view but I suspect that’s a dead duck for the foreseeable future

@MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk but I think I’m right in saying that, apart from the obvious distraction they provide the fossil fuel industry, US gas producers have also been using sequestered CO2 under pressure to extract previously inaccessible gas so most plants there were actually producing more carbon than they remove

“You know, it’s interesting, because well-meaning MPs keep telling me ‘You’ll get used to this place’, and I think, do you know what – I hope I never get used to it. It is so strange. It’s broken, it’s so backwards. The day you stop questioning all that, and fitting in, is the day that you’ve lost touch.”

Apologies if this great interview with Green MP Hannah Spencer is paywalled but what a breath of fresh air

@AlexGallagher@mastodon.scot I’m delighted that Neidle & The Times have spent untold resources dredging the nether reaches of arcane Council Tax case law to unearth the appalling scandal that Zack may have inadvertently (presumably not being familiar with arcane CT case law) have underpaid by a grand total of £4070 If correct, he should rectify the oversight I look forward to The Times’ investigation into the multiple £billions tax knowingly evaded by corporations & wealthy individuals

“GDP is not an *arbitrary* metric of economic performance. It’s not as though it’s some kind of a mistake - an accounting error that needs to be corrected….It externalises social & economic costs because capitalism externalises social & economic costs. It’s naive to imagine that if policy makers stop measuring GDP, capital will automatically cease its constant pursuit of ever-increasing returns.”

From Jason Hickel’s Less is More, which should be required reading for every politician

@bodluricon@mastodon.social I’m from Nottinghamshire so it’s always been a cob for me. I used to work for a couple from Barnsley who used teacake (it was a pub that sold cobs at lunchtime) We challenged them of course and asked what they called an actual tea cake (a sweet roll with dried fruit in, similar to a hot cross bun without the cross), they insisted, “That’s a teacake with currants in” We agreed to differ but only ever sold cobs 🤣

@AlexGallagher@mastodon.scot this “scoop” clearly relies on multiple assumptions about Zack’s lifestyle based on where his post is delivered & where he did his laundry That Neidle should lend his weight to this barrel scraping in the interests of a corrupt overseas newspaper owner whose titles have been found to have repeatedly acted illegally & who has done more harm to humanity & life on Earth than any other living being, and his class is beyond shameful

For #uk folk… Tomorrow, Open Britain, who are working incredibly hard on cleaning up #ukpolitics #ukpol present this petition to Downing Street calling for the establishment of a National Commission on #electoralreform to report to Parliament in time to introduce change before #GE29 Given #burnham has long called for new ways of doing #politics this might be the best opportunity for a generation to kick dirty money out of #elections & introduce #fairvotes Please sign https://actionstorm.org/petitions/national-commission-now
