@kevinrns@mstdn.social I'm a big fan of Canada, but it's a dirty dealer on the energy front in many senses of those words... It will, surely, be very hard for Canada to get closer to the EU without much stronger action on climate change...

@Paladin@mastodon.nu @randahl@mastodon.social It's really tough. Then again, if you run a business where data security matters - especially outside the USA - thrn this is a problem with which you must eventually grapple. It's easy to put in the 'too hard' basket - but at some point Microsoft could easily be required to disable software in a particular country... [Added] Meanwhile, I see China began a fairly systematic effort to shift to different operating systems around five years ago...

@ChrisMayLA6 These two features are fantastic - but there's another that is an order of magnitude more important - and enormously more satisfying! And that is that the messages in my feed arrive raw and unfiltered from the people I follow in the order that they write them. No algorithm. No manipulation of what I see. No idiot box in my pocket. Nirvana!

@jonhendry@iosdev.space @mattblaze@federate.social @kern@iosdev.space The Guardian reported it beautifully. Gritty detail, followed by "didn't see the actual shooting". Seems like CNN gets 10/10 for theatre, 0/10 for journalism.

@robpumphrey@mastodonapp.uk Great idea - but let's not forget the company... Treat breaches collectively and have multiplying fines. First offence £125k Second offense £250k Third £500k Fourth $1m $2m, $4m, $8m etc... These amounts are trivial compared to the money spent making these robots...

@Jeroen89@mastodon-belgium.be This phenomenon merits a more emotive name! As for the graphic - in all too many rural places, there's barely an insect to be seen. Happily, I came across a veritable insect hotspot this week - a small farm in Sussex that has been chemical free for a decade or more... Insects everywhere - more than I can remember seeing for a long time!

@schuler@mastodon.social I've been talking about these issues privately since mid last year... At the time, I felt that some people thought I'd lost the plot, as Microsft software is so much part of people's lives, though I knew similar initiatives had begun in regional governments in other countries. I subsequently learned that China started down a similar path c 2020, though I've not found good statistics on this.

@commissionerHR@mastodon.social These platforms already know the colour of your eyes, your gender, the names of your closest friends, and much, much more. So there is so much they could do - easily - to provide a safer environment. But that costs money and loses revenue, so for the most part they just go for the profit. Governments have big levers to use, but most are afraid to use them...

I woke up thinking about all the places in America named after somewhere else. Should we rename New York as New America? Or New Jersey? Or New Orleans? And what should we do about places like Washington - should that become America, DC? Or America, DA? Curious times...

RE: @Fife4Europe@mastodon.scot

This article made me wonder: how many times have US troops in Europe taken action to defend NATO allies, and how many times have the bases been used as staging posts for American military action in other countries?

This description from Wolf Blitzer sums up the last DC drama rather well.

First, a detailed description claiming to have been just a few feet away.

Then "I didn't actually see the shooting".

Is it me, or is this like a bad school play??!?

"Monthly users hovered in the low hundreds of thousands"

That's the Metsverse, on which some silicon Valley folk have lavished the best part of US$100 billion (or about 1 AI seed round, in new money).

How much money did others spend building things in the Metaverse, or buying virtual property there?

And is there a more meta company name than Meta, given this grizzly history?

Oh boy: we're going to need a bigger, better word. Cory Doctorow's "enshittification" is one thing, but the systematic dismantling of thinking ("cognitive surrender") enabled by these LLM derivatives is mind-bending.

The attached is from a LinkedIn post by someone from that Big M software company...

Anyone who knows data analysis (remember "big data"?) will surely have had the same visceral reaction as me - ad hoc analysis of data in spreadsheets is a hopeless way to extract reliable insight.
