@Chip_Unicorn I feel like a Xavier when faced with many modern implementations. There's no syntax glossary, no 'why are we doing it this way' and they've done things just slightly differently and I don't know why a bunch of it is interacting like it does. I hate feeling like a Xavier.

One can believe that the current tools and the proposed legislation is bad...
...but also accept that the corporate media is also toxic.

IRC is not Twitter. One thing is not the other. Chat lobbies for games, ICQ and Discord are far more like IRC than Twitter and tiktok.

Scale and moderation are key. Corporate media wants to grow beyond their ability to moderate. In fact, they take profit in it. They aim to maximize engagement by harnessing negative posts and emotions. That's toxic.

I would rather my kid be on Discord than on Facebook. But at the end of the day, it's about moderation and oversight.

@Chip_Unicorn Except this is how coding works. It's a strange complaint. Anyone working with old code will find bugs like this and not know their impact in the environment. That's why they're submitted and reviewed. And not checking bounds when something is called is a bug, and potentially a bad one, it sets up a trap later. This really sounds like the same grognard complaints that always deletes my submissions, and that's pre-AI.

@bruce @tzimmer_history His actions wouldn't have changed this. The Occupy movement managed to democratically snag basically zero seats anywhere. The blame is squarely upon those who decided they didn't need to vote anymore, especially in 2016 and 2024. If you aren't for something, those who are for something - even if it's a terrible something - will win elections. Your 'non-sarcastically' answer is literally the problem pointed at in this post. You want people held responsible? You need to lobby for laws that do that. You need judges who will rule that way. And you need to elect representatives - either ones that won't do the opposite or ones that will forward your ideal. Campaigning against the team who you didn't get everything from is helping the someone who wants the opposite of you to win. Someone *will* win the election. Someone *did* win.

But yeah, I really want a heat pump water heater. Ours is a gas on-demand that has an extra port for recirculating so it could be augmented with another heat source!

@PedestrianError@towns.gay @QasimRashid@mastodon.social Sharing a name short-circuits so many difficulties in day to day life - from sharing bank or credit accounts to insurance to visitation at hospitals or even just dealing with paying utility bills. This also applies to adopted children, orphaned, or step children just as much as women. To pretend that it has no advantages to change is just as blind as to say it should be required to change. As someone who has changed her name more than once - people should have the name they want. This is designed to disenfranchise everyone who's not had a perfect white Christian male life.

@IngloGamesDev@mastodon.gamedev.place This is kinda hilarious. My spouse might not have done it Monday, but she did write a fretboard learning tool this year https://mastodon.social/@obscurestar/113846684590869073 we did a video game (but it broke, because engines never sit still) and just today she built a telescope tripod out of scrap. Who needs AI? (Well, I'd very much like search tools to not suck, but that seems to be an impossible task now a days.)

We literally are in places that are like strip clubs and bars.

And it works because if someone behaves and acts the age, there there's no harm. If they don't act the age, they get kicked.

And because the age liability is upon their parents, it doesn't involve weird identity-theft software.

There is no way for kids of specific ages to form contracts and use some software - but placing the onus upon that software is a huge whole scammers can drive right through.

So you've only experienced bad moderation.

Your solution is to make it worse? What?

Moderation needs to be in context, it needs to be in scale, and yes, smaller is better.

That scale allows the moderators to have the proper context.

And no, this isn't like a school where there's no records of what actually happened - this is the internet, we have logs, backscroll, etc.

Yeah, it worked earlier because it was in scale.

Age-verification models have never worked, but age-gating based upon self-reporting has worked - it's only failing when liability is on the service to figure out who is of age. Of course they want to push the liability onto us.

@nickofnz How is clean water, bees, and climate negatively impacted by a city on Mars? Or any space industry? Launches. But it's not a significant source. Space industries help us see the climate in perspective. Our planet is precious, and we need to access the solar system to protect it, and bring the functionally limitless power and material out there to help us here on Earth. https://everydayastronaut.com/rocket-pollution/

How much do rockets pollute?

Some might find it ironic that an organization like NASA, who studies our atmosphere, is ok with rockets polluting it so much. Or isn’t it weird that Elon Musk, the same person who is pushing sustainable energy with Tesla also has a rocket company that runs on fossil fuels? So today we are going to do a deep dive into this. We are going to see just how much of what rockets emit, go over how much different fuels and engine types pollute, then we will compare their emissions against other forms of
