I started out as @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud and eventually decided I wanted to run my own Mastodon instance, so here we are. I'm a dad, devoted husband to @oceanic@10base2.dev, Site Reliability Engineer turned SRE Manager, GenX geek, #ActuallyAutistic, #Jewish and wishing Israel would just stop fucking murdering people for like 30 seconds. Level 3 Goth who took multiple levels in Druid and a few in Barbarian. If you're any form of bigot, fascist, or fascist-enabler, I will plant a tree in your ashes and listen to Peter Murphy while I do it.

I write about navigating life in #chronicpain, #technology, #bigotry, #ttrpg, #politics, and occasionally I'll share some of my #recipes. Will sometimes share #vegan recipes but not Vegan myself as my body does not do well on a vegan diet and endocrinologists are fucking expensive.

Final Fantasy XIV player, Brynhildr on the Crystal data center.

My kiddo is "The Zergling." I want them to have anonymity and I want them to feel that if what they were assigned at birth doesn't fit as they get older that they have choices. So until they're old enough to decide who they are and the extent they want their life online, you'll never see me post a photo of them and unless I slip up, you'll never see me post their gender.

#nobot / #noai / #nobridge / #nomore

Profile photo is a wall-eyed, cartoon pigeon looking frazzled, holding a mug of coffee and wearing a white t-shirt with "devops" printed across the front of it.

Header is a clip from the comic "Crow Time" by Secondlina_Isa. It is a white background with a cartoon pigeon in the center, its head poking through the middle of a slice of toast with the caption "Existential Bread" on it.

When we were looking for an upgrade to our TV, I specifically wanted a “dumb display.” No internet connection, no built in streaming services, just a display that would connect to a computer and show me the stuff my browser was playing from my Jellyfin server. If you want that kind of device, it seems that “Digital Signage” or “Commercial Display” is the category under which you are wanting to look. They do often have network ports as they’re designed to be centrally managed (think hotel TV) but there’s zero requirement to give it a connection and it works beautifully without one. Anyway there you go, hope that helps someone.

It kind of amazes me that this long after "Yes, all men" became a thing that there are guys that still don't seem to understand it and worse still, seem to get more angry at the person saying it than at the statistics that drive it in the first place. Every time something related is posted there are invariably a LOT of guys who will wade right in to talk about how surely they are an exception and they respect women and they're one of the good ones and and and. "Yes all men" means just that. All. Fucking. Men. Yes, I mean me too, that's what "all" means. Law of averages, if a woman who doesn't know me sees me walking towards them on a sidewalk late at night, it's in her best interest to get to the other side of the street and keep eyes on me and try to get somewhere there are more people. I'm mad about that! But I'm sure as hell not mad at the woman who moves to the other side of the road, I'm mad at the guys who make that statistic one worth trusting and fearing! If you're angry that you "put in all that work and it amounted to nothing" then brother I have some bad news for you. You're not as trust-worthy as you think you are. All that work to establish trust with the people around you is the bare minimum. You being a safe person is the bare minimum. You're not owed trust, you earn it through what you say and what you do and sometimes you don't get it. Use that to do some introspection, they don't owe you an explanation. Maybe you did nothing wrong at all; see earlier in this post on "Yes, all men" for clarification.

@timnitGebru@dair-community.social My mom is a mathematician, long since retired from working as a Systems Analyst. I had asked her what her thoughts were on AI being used for complex mathematical computations and her response was pretty succinct, though I'll remove the curse words as mom is from Brooklyn and curses like a sailor. "When I had to model the stress distribution on an unused hull model over time, I couldn't use any existing model, they didn't account for any of the statistical noise unique to this model. I had to create entirely new Kalman Filters to do it. AI can't create, it can only copy." Side note, just to kvell a bit about my mom, some of those filtration algorithms she created are still in use today. They were novel enough at the time she created them that JPL patented them and named them after her.

What if whenever anyone gets to a billion dollars, they get a little plastic trophy that says, "Congrats, you won at Capitalism."

Every dollar they make after that goes to public funds to feed people, house them, clothe them, etc. Then at each additional billion they would have made they get a special border for their profile picture on the billionaire website and a stamp on their punch card and they can trade it in for decoder rings and stickers and stuff.

Then when they retire they get a little plastic desk clock and a mug and we name a trash dump named after them.

The move by #Sony to no longer sell physical copies of the games isn't just a blatantly greedy cash grab, though it's certainly that in spades. To back up a moment, for those who don't follow gaming news, Sony recently announced that as of this January they would no longer be selling physical copies of their games. Much like with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, "purchasing" a game digitally from Sony does not actually grant ownership of the game. What you are actually paying for is a digital license that can be revoked at any time at the discretion of Sony. So with this new model it is now no longer possible legally to fully own a Sony Playstation game. The reason I say that this isn't *just* a greedy cash grab is because it now also removes the ability for anyone to purchase a used copy of a Playstation game. People who aren't made out of money often get deals on used systems, deals on used games, etc. Libraries frequently carry games that can be borrowed which would no longer be possible under this model. If you haven't bought a console game in a while, or never have, modern console games are very expensive. The ones made by the big studios that people wait with baited breath to purchase, those cost close to $80 USD. How does the phrase go again? Oh right...if purchasing isn't ownership than piracy isn't theft.

I wish this timeline wasn't the steaming pile of greed that it is. #AI could be such an amazing game changer for so many groups of people if the goal of it was to help people instead of to make CEOs rich. Like...imagine if you had a model built specifically around helping people navigate medical insurance claims. Not for the insurance company, for the consumer. It could call on your behalf, wait on hold, communicate what needed to be adjusted or fixed or whatever, and if the model broke down it would say "Hang on, I'm connecting you with my person" and then they'd pull you in. But it would learn from that interaction and the next time it faced that issue, it would handle it autonomously for the next person. I think if that was what AI was bringing to the table, folks would likely support a couple of new data centers. But everyone pretty well understands that AI isn't for us, it's not here to make our lives easier, it's here to make money for a handful of people and that makes the folks who are paying attention really fucking angry.

Just finished rewatching all of “Serial Experiments Lain” again. It’s probably been 20 years since the last time I watched it and it was definitely interesting experiencing it again with the current growth of AI. Not for the existence of a God figure but for the addiction to the use of the Wired the ancillary characters all demonstrate. That aspect of the story was prescient in ways I never imagined possible. Still a great story, but still one that I likely won’t watch again for another decade or two.

For us in the US, I would love to see those servers help reverse the enshittification of the internet. New private search engines that actually work, email services encrypted by default, purchasing of media that one can actually own instead of just license, etc.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social I’m not sure how it was in the rest of the state but a lot of my friends and I in Charlottesville held our collective noses when we voted for Spanberger. I know that her press was painting her as some kind of blue savior but her record belied any hope that might be the case so none of this comes as much of a surprise. Knowing what I know now, I’d still vote for her again in a heartbeat because the alternative was having another Republican governor. I fervently hope though that the disappointment in her leadership coalesces around an actual progressive like Mamdani to run against her.

There are tons of reasons why xenophobia is antithetical to who I am but there's one in particular that is a stand out for me. One of my greatest joys in life is watching a look of elated, surprised, shock come over a person's face when I say something to them in their native language. It doesn't have to be a lot. A greeting, an expression of thanks, a comment on the weather, literally anything. I hold no particular fluency, but I know how to say a smattering of words in at least 15 or so different languages. My absolute favorite reaction I think was when I was interviewing a gent for my team at a previous company and he was born in Nigeria so when talking to him, I greeted him in Yoruba and said "Happy Friday" to him and he absolutely lost it, could not stop laughing and saying how much he was shocked to hear his birth language from a complete stranger. Anyway, that's why I could never be xenophobic. Those little moments of joy are nuggets of gold that I pull out to admire every so often, I treasure them. Xenophobia robs you of ever having those moments of joy.

I just got off a call 20 minutes ago. I cannot tell you what action items I was assigned from this call. I can however tell you the three signs of Beck’s Triad, indicating cardiac tamponade even though I have not studied that in 30 years.

This would likely be okay were I an overworked cardiologist but I am an SRE manager and the action items are likely more important in my day to day than diagnosing and addressing pericardial effusion.

Why are you like this brain?!

Well wish me luck. My stretchy fabric gets here today, and I've watched three videos on "How to sew stretchy fabric without a serger" so I'm about as ready as I'll ever be. We'll see if Youtube sewing videos have lied to me because I don't want to buy a serger machine just to make floppy hats out of sensory-pleasing fabric for my massive skull.

I mean...I will if I have to but I don't want to.

I really wish that the discussions at work around the use of AI felt more authentic and more honest. Instead they read as a bunch of talking points that were themselves generated by the companies providing AI services and not by any actual thought or understanding of the technology.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Okey dokey, here we go. Firstly, Bonobo are chimpanzees, not monkeys. Chimpanzees are apes and part of the Hominidae family while to get to common relatives you have to move up to the order of primates before you get monkeys and apes in the same family tree so to speak. While bonobos are known for using sexual behavior to resolve conflict, they have the capacity to be just as lethal as any other chimpanzee and there are far more than just one record of them killing their own. Primate scientists are actually reconsidering some of the original works that labeled them as more peaceful than other chimpanzees as a recent study showed that the wild bonobos in the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve were almost three times as violent as other chimpanzees (measured by recorded incidents of punching, kicking, and biting). Interestingly, group acts of aggression are almost exclusively led by female Bonobo while solo acts of aggression were more commonly carried out by males. They are definitely less prone to infanticide than other chimpanzees, but again it's been recorded before and they do kill infant chimps of rival groups, just at a much smaller rate than with other chimpanzees. Anyway...all that being said, I am a huge proponent of people beating the absolute shite out of any of the people found in the Epstein Files to have been a part of the horrible things that were enabled by Epstein and his money. We just don't need to make things up to do so. That all can happen entirely on its own without made-up facts about Bonobos.
