They're not using fucking #AI.

AI is just glorified fucking auto-fucking-complete and just as wrong as auto-complete periodically is.

It is a bubble that will burst.

Stop using it.

It is rotting your brain.

Retired renewable energy & software nerd living near Naarm (Melbourne), AU.

I tend to call trends years too early to make money on bets, but can be annoyingly prescient.

@aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au @MsDropbear42@infosec.space It's not just that the media is uncritical, but they are clueless - viz. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-15/firmus-ai-company-tasmania-biggest-power-user-three-sites/106783142 "Firmus Technologies is building an "AI factory" in Launceston, and plans for two more factories in Tasmania have come to light." and "Firmus has said the factory will contain data centre infrastructure and specialised computers that use graphics processing units to produce "AI tokens" needed for tools such as generative AI chatbot ChatGPT." Fuck me. Even if Firmus did actually say this, in some sort of attempt to dumb things down for aunty, FFS, the journalist could have spent half a minute to discover that this is total bullshit rather than report it. But chances are that Firmus did not say this. Meanwhile Marles is on #abc730 parroting frontier #AI companies offering an incredible opportunity for training in Australia as if there is any value that accrues to the host organism for the parasite that attaches and drains resources before laying eggs that grow into larvae before consuming it. #auspoI
abc.net.au

AI company set to become Tasmania's largest power user

Artificial intelligence company Firmus Technologies will become Tasmania's biggest power user if its ambitions to establish three "AI factories" in the state come to fruition.

@Tooden@aus.social I love Angostura bitters - not in a traditional lemon lime and bitters as we used to make behind the bar - too much sweet lime cordial, lemonade, a dash of bitters - all too sweet, not very bitter at all. But soda, lime juice (not cordial) and bitters with the tiniest dash of blood orange cordial for just enough sweetness to balance is delicious. When I was drinking, I'd mix with gin, but now that I'm off the piss, just a pinch of salt. @SeaFury@aus.social

@mattblaze I am in a hotel now (in Japan, for context). I observed that you could access any floor when my backpack pressed several floor buttons on our first ride. When I later attempted to access the laundry room floor but could not, but could access my floor, thought that perhaps the first observation was an anomaly associated with the fact that the only other elevator was being attended by an elevator repairman at the time of the multiple floor incident. It turns out that I had my Suica card in my hand, not my hotel card, had selected my floor based on the swipe of another guest in the elevator, but was unable to select the laundry floor after a time out. I discovered this when I couldn't open my room with the Suica. The flaw in this hotel is that one swipe enables multiple floors, defeating the security access aspect while providing the anonymity. A guest can swipe, and an intruder can then access a floor that they have previously observed a target accessing, and then, presumably, having determined the room number via other (social engineering) means, door knock with "hotel engineering".

@SeaFury@aus.social Bitter Lemon is my chicken soup! If I'm unwell, I drink it; I normally don't like sweet things at all, but if I'm off my food (P.S. I loved the "I don't eat" poll option) Bitter Lemon provides a little sugar, and the combination of bitter and sour seems to sooth an upset stomach.

@allrite @liamvhogan P. S. I skipped past the bit where I ignored the "short of feeding" part of your question, because whilst they are smart birds, they are also motivated by food and what interests them at any one point in time, with food coming first by a long margin. Partially solve the food problem, and they will have more time for hanging around.

I am not surprised that it is an Australian @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au who so eloquently points out the absolute hipocricry of those who have defended the execution of an already disarmed and restrained civilian for having the temerity of filming and attempting to defend another civilian from armed thugs, and for exercising their right to carry a weapon. A weapon that, the right to carry, is so often claimed to be needed to defend against that very thing that is happening under their watch right now. @drdrowland@fediscience.org @SeanCasten@mastodon.social

@MattHatton@aus.social @decryption@aus.social having used phone as computer devices since *cough* windows phones, they are OK at a pinch, but... The windows phone (Nokia something something) had a great camera, and when plugged in, usable Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, decent keyboard and mouse. Let down by not honouring typical keyboard shortcuts in the applications, so required you to use the mouse more than you would otherwise. Was a useful gimmick, and it was enough for proving a point. Samsung Dex still works just as well - which is to say it is clunky.

@mmalc you would know, then, that safe, accurate medical transcription has been about the same distance into the future as *safe* full self driving, but for much longer. Both require hyper-vigilant supervision, for the same reason - anything missed by either can easily be fatal. Voice recognition is not getting better, now that it is being called #AI, but it probably is being trusted by decision makers more than it should be. @skinnylatte @wakame

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I love this! I had a coach at one point - primarily because I was unable to work with an arsehole who was trying to block me all the time and the wet blanket exec decided that the best bet was coaching instead of firing the fuckwit - though the fuckwit was eventually fired, but the point is that the coach once said to me that the reason that I don't tolerate idiots trying to block me is that I don't give them enough time to catch up with my speed of understanding what the problem is and how to solve it which is why they always seem to be blocking me, because they just can't think quickly enough. I took the complement, but also pointed out that there was a strong culture of not invented here. Never slow down!

@luis_in_brief I wasn't planning on returning to the US until some semblance of sanity returned to the administration, so that I could feel safe visiting, but this is another nail in the coffin: On my first family trip we visited: Arches Canyonlands Natural Bridges Zion Bryce Canon Grand Canyon And that's just in three states. 6 x 4 x 80 is another 1920 Now it's just my wife and I, so half the difference, and we can afford it now, but then we probably could not have. For reference, a return airfare to LAX is around AUD 1047, or USD 681, so that difference will pay for three return airfares. @not2b @mattblaze

@decryption@aus.social @MattHatton@aus.social not disagreeing. That said, the Nokia did run Windows 10 on a phone nearly a decade ago. Wasn't the full x64 binary, obviously, but was the same OS API, and the shite that is the AI snapdragon "tell me how to cook pasta because I am a father who is unexpectedly stuck at home with my kids without my missus" devices that officeworks and hardly normal advertise evolved from that. Good? Probably not. Relevant? Also probably not. Could Apple run the full OS on either hardware if they wanted - yeah, they could. I guess that was the point that I was trying to make. It has been done before.

@Kuniti_shino@pounced-on.me @merill@infosec.exchange I haven't had need for magisk / shamiko for a while now, but under Android 15, they worked perfectly. Root, recompile to defeat certificate pinning, MITM, hide root and then using something like http toolkit to work out what an application was doing was pretty straightforward. Reverse engineering for everyone.

@sue Wow! As a retired ex-(not-really-a-very-good-except-T-SQL)-coder, I *felt* that, and, for the first time in my life, realised that I was a really brilliant code reader, and a middling code writer. I could read almost any language, and debug many; if I was told what a particular module / function / script was supposed to be doing, but that it was failing, I could almost always spot the bug. Couldn't necessarily know how to fix it, mind, you. You are, of course, right. Your students do need to know how to read code, if for no other reason than to know if what the LLM has spat out vaguely matches the prompt.

The biggest problem that I recalled when I tried it, though, was answering a call; not that you couldn't do it, but if you wanted to have a confidential conversation in an open plan office then you would have to undock your phone to walk away and hope that those apps were as resilient as desktop apps when undocking.
