Australia is no longer promising to ban domestic trade of elephant ivory
https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2026-10-03/domestic-trade-ban-of-elephant-ivory-abandoned/107165470

Ivory trade is still happening in Australia, and our government's attitude is negligence bordering on contempt. This article highlights a double standard: we prevent illegal trade of body-parts of endangered Australian wildlife, but we back-off from commitments about overseas animals.

Ivory now has an "ick" factor in most countries. It's like clothes made with animal fur. I've heard some folks get high-end musical instruments restored/rebuilt to have ivory inlay replaced with ethically sourced, sustainable materials prior to selling the instrument secondhand.

Most other countries acknowledge that buying and selling elephant tusks and rhinoceros horns is a global problem. They want to work together to stop it because wherever in the world it happens, it supports the business of hunting and killing elephants and rhinos.

Ivory still legal to sell in Australia despite 2019 promise to ban it

A new study has found hardly any of the $1.2 million worth of elephant ivory sold or advertised in a six-month period in Australia came with paperwork proving its origin.

@WPalant@infosec.exchange That all sounds like a lot of unnecessary hard work, when all you need is: (1) Denial. (2) Wrapping contentious terms in scare quotes to create ambiguity and plausible deniability (see previous point). (3) A way to shoot the messenger and stifle current dissent, and cause enough intimidation to dissuade dissent in future.

Amelia Hamer is having another tilt at politics. Previously, she failed to win Kooyong. It was practically the safest "safe" Federal seat until lost by former Treasurer, Joshua Frydenberg. Monique Ryan took that "blue ribbon" seat for the Teals and is doing a good enough job to hold it for multiple terms. This time, Amelia Hamer is trying to win the State seat of Malvern, one of the more "old money" seats in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It's down the road from her home in a different state seat, in the even more affluent suburb of Hawthorn. Amelia Hamer describes herself as a renter although she's a NIMBY and a landlord. She owns property in London, and more recently bought property in Melbourne, where she's lived for several whole months of her adult life. After getting a degree from Oxford, Amelia Hamer recently graduated Magna Cum Perturbans from The Peter Dutton School for Smiling Human-style. #AusPol #VicPol #AmeliaHamer #MoniqueRyan #PeterDutton #JoshuaFrydenberg

This morning, Jacinta Allan stepped aside as Premier of Victoria, and Ben Carroll was sworn-in promptly.

Ben Carroll becoming Premier is a regressive step for Victoria. He's a Shoppie who used to work with Stephen Conroy.

I'm tipping Victorians can expect Ben Carroll to offer:

  • Talk about caring for the working-class, while actually suppressing wages and rights of workers, especially young and low income people.
  • Centrist concessions to RWNJs.
  • Erosion of the rights and protections for minorities such as LGBTQIA+ people.
  • Pandering to conservative religious dogma on issues such as women's health, contraception, and abortion.
  • Ignorant meddling with Tech, such as censorship, NBN/broadband, and whatever is happening with AI.
  • Bizarre legislative carve-outs and gifts to big business.
  • Further entrenchment of the gambling industry.

The fires of hell are burning a bit brighter, thanks to the death of Lindsey Graham. Next, do Mitch McConnell. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-12/lindsey-graham-dies/106907306 #USPol #LindseyGraham #MitchMcConnell

If you act like a total piece of shit by using an LLM to extrude a wall of text (ironically, about Marx and the means of production), cram it into an "infographic" image, and then try to cover your arse by saying it's "AI-assisted" in the Alt-Text, but doing little else to describe the image — which is the entire fucking reason for Alt-Text, you nincompoop — then I'm going shove a couple of my handcrafted em-dashes where the sun don't shine, and block you.
Get in the bin.

Answer in 10 seconds or lose your fleet: The e-bike row dividing Yarra
https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/answer-in-10-seconds-or-lose-your-fleet-the-e-bike-row-dividing-yarra-20260730-p60k3i.html

Previously: @BinChicken@theblower.au

Streets Alive Yarra president, Jeremy Lawrence, campaigns for safety, usability, and efficiency of streets and transport. I applaud his work and usually agree with him. In this case I think his observations are good but his conclusions miss the mark.

The conditions the council stated are reasonable requirements. Eg: removing dumped hire-bikes in 60 minutes, and any "dangerously placed" in 30 minutes.

Jeremy Lawrence said: "In my view, it was so onerous [that] no share bike operator, even if it was Lime … could make it work in a financially viable manner."

He's correct. But, it doesn't mean we should give a free pass to hire-bike companies, cut safety standards, or give public land to a company to use as parking-space. I think it's time we accept that the hire-bike business-model does not work.

‘Taking the mickey’: Inner-city council tears up e-bike deal https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/taking-the-mickey-inner-city-council-tears-up-e-bike-deal-20260714-p60fbu.html The City of Yarra has ended its farcical, greenwashing, multimillion dollar, six-year, on-and-off "trial" with Lime e-bikes. Previously, there was a brief suspension of the contract due to Lime failing to pick-up their trash that had been dumped inconsiderately in bad locations by customers, and because Lime got caught saturating the city with more hire vehicles than the contract permitted. And, it's been suspected by some people that Lime had also been dumping e-bikes: trucking them into suburbs and treating public footpaths as their own depot. This final cancellation of the Lime contract means several inner city suburbs of Melbourne will finally be rid of the problem of shitty people with shitty cycling skills and shitty attitudes to safety, who were riding shitty rental e-bikes and scooters, and making shitty decisions about where to dump them. #Melbourne #Yarra #Lime #EBikes #Greenwashing

Liberal power brokers left phones in car to avoid tracing before discussing corruption probe, Icac hears https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/aug/03/icac-nsw-young-liberal-phones-corruption-probe Shhh! Nothing to see here! Nothing suspicious about everyone agreeing to ditch their phones before attending a secret meeting about taking illegal political donations from conservative and religious donors. Nothing suspicious about coaching witnesses before a trial. Nothing suspicious about a conspiracy to take over a political party and backstab a Premier in an effort to assert control of a State Government. This is fine, just the usual internal jostling, for the Liberal Party of New South Wales. #AusPol #NSWPol #DominicPerrottet #ICAC

@futurebird@sauropods.win @Timpostma@mastodon.world I believe he said words to that effect, too. I think it shows this "trade" is an illusion. Any feeling of safety it gives is not actual safety, and the feeling doesn't last. As you said, you gave up everything and get nothing.

@Timpostma@mastodon.world @futurebird@sauropods.win It depends on how much personal freedom you'll give up to feel a bit of temporary safety. The trade-off isn't worth it, according to Benjamin Franklin.
