Over the weekend, I lent a hand at my local library as they assisted a few customers installing #linux onto their laptops that don't support #Win11 . One person I was helped, got stuck while I was answering questions. Instead of waiting they took initiative and asked a big #LLM , and got an answer before I finished.
Later on I went about the process of looking up the same question manually, the way I usually do it, it took me about 15 minutes to find the answer.

@madalex@fosstodon.org @eff@mastodon.social nothing, but a lot of people have never actually heard of it. I know plenty of people that never used it, and some that forgot they even used to. One of the most popular readers was Google's reader, and that was killed in 2013. Some people probably think google kill RSS along with it.

@geniodiabolico holy shit, never install corporate spyware from your employer on a personal device. If your employer won't provide a device then use a cheap second device.

@soapdog exclusive Apple user since 1985, ditched to Linux and Android.
If I may suggest, first get a Pixel so that you can try several Android ROMs, particularly GrapheneOS which others have recommended. It was the only one my banking app worked with(YMMV) and they've committed to never doing age verification.
If you have lots of friends and family with Apple Stockholm Syndrome(edit: ASS, how did I not see it?), then also check out openbubbles.

@ppb1701 very good post.
It feels like some weird fanboy-ism is ruining everything on the ol' internet these days, particularly the discourse around privacy and security. I'm just not sure what people think these businesses have done to earn their loyalty in the face of valid criticism.

@dutch_connection_uk@mastodo.neoliber.al no expert, but I believe yggdrasil's initial handshake negotiation to establish an encrypted connection would be fully compromised if the WiFi network itself is compromised.
This all boils down to not using WiFi networks that you don't control or trust. An important note from the paper's author, it's a lot easier to set up a fake AP and MITM that way.

@burgerdrome@aus.social you should just totally buy what I bought, even though I hate it as much as you hate yours. Recommending it allows me to feel validation in my choices and completes me as a person.

@witewulf@mastodonapp.uk @burgerdrome@aus.social unfortunately, I have one of those, and LG does their best to actively ruin the experience by pushing more and more ads on the screen. Also, the inability to put the TV on it’s own vpn is what I would consider a deal breaker these days. I constantly get Nagged to upgrade the software, which if you wait long enough it’ll just force the update on you with your agreement. No, fuck LG, this is the last time I give them money for this shit.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social I’ve suddenly gotten curious about anti-drone electronic warfare. I wonder if there’s a great hardware hacking project I could take up this winter.

@j3s@merveilles.town well fuck me… here I’ve been using the command-hulk-smash keystroke(both fists) whenever something like that happened. All this time, goddamn coredump could’ve saved me like 2 or 7 laptops over the years.

@j5y7 the 80s assault weapons ban largely criminalised certain accessories. It was a big ridiculous pantomime of safety and security for the politicians and media to get all jazz hands about. It did nothing to address fundamental issues. Passing something similar would end up just as watered down by the gun lobby. The current supreme court is so pro gun, that they're in practice little more than a 2nd amendment enforcement mechanism.

@j5y7 It's not possible in the US, the gun lobby owns too many politicians and federal judges. For all the politicians performative handwringing, pearl clutching and of the children thinking or praying; none of them will do anything.
I've had it with the US; I'm leaving and raising my kids somewhere that I don't have to worry about them getting shot because someone had a bad day at school.

@soapdog open bubbles is great because you don't need to keep a mac around after that initial set up. There's no "server" the phone pretends to be your Mac when communicating with Apple. As long as you have one laptop that can dual boot into macos, you can nuke that partition later if you needed it. You can do it on a phone, but the devs don't recommend it.

@reflex @niccolove uh, why are you even dragging Epstein into the discussion? Just to score rhetorical points or are you saying that anthropic are the same as Epstein? Sure AI bad and all, but that's a ridiculously false equivalence.

@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org please don't ever do big budget productions for product announcements like Apple. Keep these announcements honest and humble, and focus on making great products.
Personally, was hoping for a framework detachable 2-in-1, but probably gonna end up with lenovo x13. Would really love to see this from framework even if a bit chonk. Nothing on the market that's repairable, upgradable and runs linux as a first class citizen.

@dirk@gts.0x7be.net well Framework did pay Intel for chips, probably enough to have a body show up and say marketing stuff. Canonical on the other hand, could just be so starved for validation that they might've begged to be involved. Honestly, when those guys walked on stage my attention wandered to the point that I technically stopped watching.

@randahl@mastodon.social just visiting twitter makes you complicit with Musk's agenda through engagement and ad views that makes revenue.
I did recently stumble on this browser extension
https://github.com/DoingFedTime/PrivacyPlease
It redirects any twitter link to Nitter. Also, with Nitter you can generate RSS feeds of any account you still might want to follow. I generally don't like browser extensions, but this is actually pretty useful. Only downside, not on mobile, yet.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I have a friend in the the southern hemisphere, we host each others off site encrypted backups and share a jellyhub server.
Currently planning an overhaul and simplification of my backup scheme, bit of a mess of overlapping services.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social while the open source ecosystem is far from perfect, closed/proprietary doesn't touch my hardware. Yes of course there's ugly little firmware blobs, but we don't live in the cool everything is FOSS alternative reality do we?
Mentally insert a "none shall pass" Gandalf meme, so as not to waste resources.
