One thing I will promise; I never block anyone just because I may disagree with or dislike their words. Because the only people who do are cowards. Want to attack me? Fine. If you think that makes the world a better place, go ahead; you cannot hurt me with your words.

@chuls@mastodon.world I see lots of people pointing out how the richest people control "trillions of dollars". None of them ever seem to point out that the middle class, as a group, controls far more than the super-rich. And somehow, many of those commentators support giving the government far more control over, well...everything. And guess how many trillions the government already controls

@engravecavedave@mastodon.social There's a group of amateur radio operators that make it their whole deal to work within the confines of 5 watts of power (legal maximum for the top license is 1500 watts on some bands). Kind of makes me wonder if there are homelabbers out there who make it a point to build truly minimal systems, or only use discarded hardware, etc.

@MissGayle@urbanists.social Yet another person who mistakenly imagines that "our system" is free market capitalism; as if the government does not control, directly or indirectly, huge swathes of the economy. Well, not really; "mistakenly" implies a lack of intent, and this person CLEARLY hates learning anything that might challenge their narrative.

@ZachWeinersmith I mean....people in general don't care much about mathematical proofs, from AI or any other source. I'd be surprised if 1 person in 1000 has ever read any mathematical proof at all. But about half of the planet will, at some point, care about having a girlfriend.

My foray into #sourdough #bagels begins.

I made a HUGE sourdough starter a few weeks ago, then gently dehydrated it and ground it into powder. Now, I just subbed in 80g of it for 80g of flour in the already-proven bagel recipe. Hopefully, it will work nearly as well and produce a good sourdough flavor. I do anticipate a longer rise time. #baking

@spacemagick@mastodon.social @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon@mastodon.social No, no, there's no meaningful material difference between life now and life 50 years ago. People back then all had microwave ovens, cars as safe and fuel efficient as we have now, and they all carried around portable phones with free long distance that also had more computing power than spacecraft of the era. There have been no meaningful medical, technological, or other advances. It's a pure, apples-to-apples situation.

@lvl3k@mastodon.social A stance against capitalism does indeed imply advocacy for socialism or communism, because there really aren't any economic system that don't fall under one of those. Your color analogy is therefore heavily flawed.

@MartMichaelis@mastodonapp.uk Yet again, you fail to understand what capitalism even is. Healthcare in the UK is almost entirely controlled by the government; it's the exact opposite of a free market. This isn't a hard concept, especially for someone who claims to be a professor. Have you absolutely no intellectual honesty?

It would be better for half the people in world to cut their driving in half than for a handful of people to give it up entirely. You shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Heck, I doubt you yourself truly do not get any utility from cars.

@chuls@mastodon.world Just interesting how the commentary pretty much always leaves those sorts of things out. People point a finger at these super-rich people and how rich they are, and folks are left to conclude, or are directly told, that it's bad. And then the "solution" is usually to give more power to the government, as if they don't control far, far more wealth, and exert far more power.

@TinJar "Women are the first to die when extreme weather hits?" I'd be interested to see actual, not anecdotal, proof of any such effect. The linked article certainly doesn't provide actual proof. Statements like "Women are the first to die when an extreme climate event happens because they'll save everyone before saving themselves"? Please. People are not a monolith or this simplistic. Plenty of women have fled natural disasters, which is fine. And plenty of men have died helping others.

I challenge anyone to point to a single example, one, of a datacenter that actually exists and is not subject to regulations of some kind. Just one.
