#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.09.28 — Could you work without the [I]nternet? What would change?
I wrote using a computer from 1975 through 1997—though the early years were timeshare—without the aid of the Internet. Spellcheckers and grammar checkers appeared well before they became Internet-based, though I have hardcopy (remember books?) dictionaries, reverse dictionaries, spell-check books, and thesauri. I do have encyclopedias of science, engineering, and other knowledge lookup books, but realistically, research without a good librarian would be very much more difficult without the Internet, and would have taken days instead of minutes. I look up a lot of things. Writing my Mars-colonization novel would have been very difficult without being able to look up facts, photos, a discussions at the time of need. Moreover, I would not have written it at all, since the feminist story is based on a #writever month of feminist prompts—31 of them, one for each chapter—posted on Mastodon.
I am thankful for the Internet.

Bigender friends: I'm new to the discovery that I'm bigender(trans man, and woman), and I'm wondering how many of you who are also bigender use separate names for your different genders. Do you have different names, or do you use a gender neutral or non-binary name that works across all?

I am currently in an interesting(and somewhat unexpected, I might add) chapter of my gender journey, having worked out that Bigender is a term that seems to sit really well with me and that I am, in fact, both trans man *and* cis woman. It's all very new and it's a vulnerable but exciting place to be to discover this over the past day, and there is a definite sense of relief too. I'm deeply proud to be a trans man. I'm equally proud(and excited) to discover that I'm also a woman. Also, to be clear, this is not a system-mate/alter as happens within my plurality/DID(that's part of the reason it took some time to figure out, because I had to unravel some plural stuff first😉)
Of course, I do not have all the answers, or claim to speak for anyone but myself and my experiences(everyone's journey is different), but here's your reminder that it's okay to discover more about yourself. It's okay if labels shift(or shift back, or sideways). It's okay to try things out, and work out what fits you best, and when that stops resonating, to find things that work better. It's *you* gender, your journey, your life. You get to decide. As long as it makes sense to you and adds value and peace and joy to your life, go for it🥰

3/21 I was struck in Stockholm by the presence of women soldiers on ceremonial guard duty, the frequency with which I saw men pushing prams or picking up children from child care, and the numerous WC facilities adapted to use by both sexes, thus obviating the pain of exclusion without culture war.
Of course, much more remains to be said on the topic of the Swedes and gender, but they seem to be heading in the right direction.

gender is a social construct built to allow you to describe some aspects your relationship to yourself. You do not need to be serious if you do not feel serious in that way. Your gender is yours to do what you want with

Lady of the Water (1995) by Alannah Robins.
Since I was a kid and visited the English Lake District regularly with my family, I’ve longed to get back to Grizedale forest to see some of the sculptures there. Given the wet woodland setting, not all of them last forever. Some become unsafe and are removed while others just rot away. This one is an amazing thirty years old.
My favourites have always been those that make use of water. Lady of the Water also appeals because (to me) it also asks questions about gender and work and emotional labour - perhaps in ways that ten-year-old me would not have understood.

Despite only numbering around six million in a country of 270 million, the Bugis people of South Sulawesi are highly influential.
Their prowess as seafarers and traders established their influence across Indonesia and the Malay Archipelago (and struck fear into the hearts of European colonisers, who regarded them as ruthless pirates).
And they recognise five genders.

Are we doing pronouns wrong?
Telling someone your preferred pronouns and having that respected can be validating, but it also gives away a little power. It's giving the gender Nazis an easy way to be mean.
What about modifying the first person pronoun? As a nonbinary person I am quite happy "I" is not gendered, but if you want to assert your gender, maybe using "Im/Ir/Ix" (or whatever) might be more useful. Instead of a once-and-done pronoun intro, you use the first person pronoun almost every other sentence. You are not depending on other people to adopt language.
Secondly, in addition to wildly gendering "I", why not normalize they/them for everyone. This takes away the linguistic platform for misgendering microagressions.
For me, gender has always been unwelcome and problematic. My apologies if I have not captured the nuances of pronoun usage from other perspectives. It is certainly not my intention to cause offence or invalidate any identity.

@SecondUniverse@autistics.life I like your second idea better than your first. So many things are unecessarily gendered already without adding to it.
I lived in a community that spoke a language with no gender (so one word for he, she, it, him her, his, its). How refreshing that was!
I also realised how in English we always ask the gender of a baby so we know how to refer to it, making gender a big deal right from day one of life outside the womb.😞

It's for anyone whose gender (or lack thereof) isn't described by the M/F binary. It's short and easy, and results are useful in academia, business and self-advocacy.

This feels like a fedi question:
Does anyone have resources both for older parents, and their kids, for explaining #gender and transition?
Something like a coming out guide, but also how to support your parents, giving them space to understand new things.
Reading material is probably preferred over online given the age involved.
