I've been in IT for 45 years, which doesn't mean much, except that my mind boggles when I think how normal mortals (i.e. sane people) go about understanding something like this: "However, for keys prior to Release3, our FIDO2 Type-C to Lightning adapter supports FIDO protocols only, not OTP. If you wish to use OTP functionality with an older key, you will need to use NFC instead. Additionally, when using the HOTP feature of your FIDO2 key, be aware that it functions via keyboard emulation."

How do you fit a dictionary in 64kb RAM? Unix engineers solved it with clever data structures and compression tricks. Here's the fascinating story behind it.

It's been seven (7) years already since I had the honour of being master of ceremonies (oh, sorry, that should be primary of ceremonies, I think) for the "DNS Privacy Panel" at the FOSDEM DNS Devroom. I got to interview the wonderful @bert_hubert@eupolicy.social, @bortzmeyer@mastodon.gougere.fr, and @bagder@mastodon.social (from left to right). One of the only rooms I actually GOT IN TO, even though it was FULL -- @Habbie@floss.social reserved standing room for me! :-D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd3QWZ76IZg

Analysis of the DNS outage on 5 May 2026

During a routine DNSSEC key rollover on 5 May 2026, some non-validatable signatures were generated and distributed. As a result, validating resolvers were temporarily unable to successfully verify their DNS responses for .de domains. This led to noticeable restrictions in the accessibility of .de domains for approximately three hours.

Being a European is great until it isn't. Sister is trying to get her Dutch passport renewed. All consulates which did that in Germany have been shut down except Berlin who have no slots left THIS YEAR. (Duesseldorf, Frankfurt, Muenchen closed). Dutch border municipalities, of which there are 15, are totally overwhelmed "Take extra long waiting times into account". One possibility would have been Bern (CH) which is overwhelmed, so it's now Vienna (AT) with a first slot in September.

RFC 4034: Resource Records for the DNS Security Extensions

This document is part of a family of documents that describe the DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). The DNS Security Extensions are a collection of resource records and protocol modifications that provide source authentication for the DNS. This document defines the public key (DNSKEY), delegation signer (DS), resource record digital signature (RRSIG), and authenticated denial of existence (NSEC) resource records. The purpose and format of each resource record is described in detail, and an exampl

@winfried@fosstodon.org Indeed, and that was what I experienced in the night of Tuesday. But, as NTA are set resolver-side, it’s not something that’ll scale. There are roughly 16 (18?) million .de zones. How many are signed? Shall we say 20%? That leaves a heck of a lot of NTA to be loaded on all resolvers.

@winfried@fosstodon.org it sounds to me like you are repurposing NTA to re-invent a DS. ;-) I don’t think that’s terribly productive, particularly as signed NS RRsets are rare, iirc, at least until DELEG is done.
