It is very good at generating computer code and will vastly increase the quality of what professional programmers can produce. That is my experience

@selzero@syzito.xyz That is useful it is more describing what fascists do at the macro rather than what they are, why they get mass support, how they feel That is useful - but I disagree about calling ordinary people fascists (the leaders i care not about) Fascists are lonely. So cuddle a fascist. Help them move away to a better place Hate and fear will not defeat facism, but love and hope can There is no time to waste, if it comes to war, it is too late

@mackuba@martianbase.net The lack of a decent standard library! Weep... For serious work on a corporate server I use as few crates as I can get away with. It can easily get to 200 crates (many duplicates at slightly different versions) for very simple programmes. Avoiding that usually means rejecting Rust altogether. I cannot import that much unknown, unverified code with a clear conscience.

I am in complete agreement with:

I would use a lot of discretion if I were to use AI Tools at all. There is nothing that can be coded which will match the human creative act, ever

Where we might disagree is I view agents as an extension of an and an enabler for my creativity

The lies! OMG!!

The idea that capitalism can make money for the investor class by eliminating the labouring classes with AI has many capitalists in raptures of disgusting joy.

Fools

@oak_kitten @mjd @nixCraft And they go on to say Curser has a positive margin on some of their products I've seen this before. My (educated) guess is the $200/$5000 comes from counting total compute spend at Anthropic including training and dividing it by income. Anthropic and co are in a desperate to train bigger models to outcompete each other in a race to bankruptcy The interesting data would be the marginal cost of servicing prompts. I see no evidence that is so negative

@mackuba@martianbase.net This is my biggest disagreement with the Rust community

If they insist on having a sparse standard library they need to have officially blessed crates.

blessed.rs is useful, but it is not that.

I have been watching closely as LLMs and the harnesses have developed and they have astounded me. There is little useful theory. That "text completion" could do all this is very surprising and I know of no theory to explain it https://youtu.be/_MwMLPmMccs?si=RSTP2TcZCqmNGxX- is a short talk by Greg Kroah-Hartman you may find helpful.

you can easily tell if a project on github is slop.

you can easily tell if a project on github has used coding agents. Not the same thing

@dansup@mastodon.social How can you tell? A big dump of code in a PR must be wearisome no matter where it comes from. I am not a maintainer facing this, but I do use coding agents for writing code. I disagree that agents are useful for people who cannot code. For little things, yes. An Emacs macro, or an Excell macro or shell script, I see it. But for anything substantive IMO coding agents need a skilled operator Also I have gotten more from agents reviewing my code than vice verse

@T2R @malwaretech The Internet requires none of those things to function. It may seem pedantic, but the IP protocol, and the TCP protocol on top of that are below the level of DNS etcetera. The Web and the Internet are different. The Web runs on the Internet, and is less reliable (though not crippled by) those things you mention Fair to say most people, now, see the Internet through phone apps that introduce new classes of risk and failure

I am a keen user, and advocate for, LLMs

Inserting a pointless voice or chatbot between me and the human I want to talk to...is not an 'AI strategy'.

I could not agree more!

LLMs have increased my productivity as a computer programmer like a chainsaw increases my productivity processing firewood. A tool needs a user!

We are infested here and I would like to fight back. Legally naturally. Locating and identifying them is the first step

@tastapod@mas.to Capitalists seeing "increased productivity" and jumping straight to "fire workers" are a blight on our society. But (if even a tiny bit of capitalists theory holds) their lunch will get eaten by those capitalists who use it to empower the staff they have. Economics is about relationships. If all you know how to do is count then those that can work well with people, and also count, will prevail over you. But as we go through the adjustment many (myself included) are suffering.

I live at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waitati We make extensive use of a local Facebook group. It is a fabulous service, except you must be on Facebook, which is dreadful for everybody's mental health Many here are on Facebook only for local news. Network effects bite very hard, and alternatives are very hard. I hope this sounds familiar Looking at joinroundabout now, thanks
