@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I'm unsurprisingly comfortable with the loss of a few data centres in the name of war
I'd accept 1,000 data centre losses over 1 school or hospital any day of the week

@papiris @EUCommission which would be the ideal situation if most phones didn't come with locked bootloaders or other technical restrictions but manufacturer's are doing everything they can to lock down and restrict their devices keeping people on a perpetual replacement cycle
We have longer support windows but we need regulation and significant fines to stop the practice of restriction before pushing recycling
As it goes, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in that order
@EdCates these are same people that put the bottom of their phone horizontal to their ear and talk (on speaker phone)
At what point did society collectively forget how to use a phone properly?
This is one of the things that really annoys me
Replying to
@nixCraft@mastodon.social I hear that
I've had a few calls from my mother about "Microsoft tech support" calls or emails but luckily she knows not to believe them and hangs up because she uses a Mac and my brother, who picks up most of the tech issues because he lives closer, refuses to allow any MS products in her house
His approach is to never trust anything associated with MS and has told her that if the word Microsoft is mentioned, don't go any further

@stux@mstdn.social I did enjoy the films on release despite some problematic elements and they certainly don't need to be remade for streaming or otherwise even if you don't consider the problematic author and where the profits will be going
As soon as I saw the transphobic and hate filled ramblings on twitter, it was instant boycott from me for anything by JK Rowling
That's it. She lost my support right there
I wouldn't even bother to download the stuff because potter just needs to be left to die

@cwebber@social.coop such low hanging fruit there
If they wanted to impress people they should have cloned someone who doesn't already appear like a robotic souless entity

@f@ieji.de @omgubuntu@floss.social Definitely preaching to the converted here
A Linux mobile device would be my ideal solution but I did hear there is some way to go on delivering a daily driver Linux phone
I am definitely one of the people that would switch to Linux once I could do everything I need on there
Replying to
@omgubuntu@floss.social the final, most concrete and tech loyalist agnostic reason to never buy an apple device and wow, it's a big one
I know google will likely do this too but at least you don't need an account, have more control of the updates and can freeze/remove play services on android devices
Replying to
@Enema_Cowboy @cstross I did notice at the time that eBay were also removing listings for the figures that included the movie acurate character name so sellers where just listing them as "fat man" to avoid removal
@briankrebs that's scary stuff.
I deleted my account a while ago because of the AI slop and discriminatory policy changes but I feel sorry for anyone who unknowingly submits their data to those companies

@pheonix@hachyderm.io Very good advice. Just because somewhere asks, you don't have to tell
I make it a game to break profiling & love it when I get wrong suggestions
I tell the truth on govt, medical & financial things but anything else is fake
I use unconnected aliases with different email, personal details to limit profiling to a small niche of someone who legally doesn't exist
The problem is too much data collection &
anything that can be faked should be
TOS about accurate data are always ignored

@girlonthenet@mastodon.social bluesky was always pitched as "the new twitter" or "like old twitter" and yes, twitter started off well but enshitification crept in and it became a mess long before Elonia Muskov purchased it.
If Bluesky is trying to be early twitter, things will naturally become crappier and more exploitative as its popularity increases and costs rise.
I considered joining but I remember tech history and can see that patterns have a habit of repeating.
Replying to
@marasawr@mastodon.social that's my approach
When I've told people to do that they think it's illegal to lie to companies. Err, no, tell them the minimum you need to get service then lie about everything else
I've been doing this for years at some level & password manager notes are useful for this if you can't save identities
I have so many names, birth dates, genders, emails etc & it's not uncommon to register random business units as my address
Tracking is inevitable but you can reduce profile linking

@tenderizer@mastodon.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social for the younger generation, it's usually a talk about not over sharing or giving away personal information just because somewhere wants it
For the older generation, it's a talk about not trusting random people saying they want to help
I think only late gen x / early millennials get the middle ground by being sceptical/cynical about everything
