I live under a rock, occasionally emerging when the slugs run out of beer and start whining. Not quite round enough to be a roly-poly bug. Prone to odd humor.

@adhdeanasl You know for sure if the kid's birth name was Richard or Robert, they'd have no problem following the kid's wish to be called Rick or Bob or even Racer. It's just if the kid wants to be called Olivia that it's suddenly an issue.

Please, for the love of sanity, do not hide your weed infested area by covering it with plastic sheeting and a layer of bark mulch. Two years from now you will have a bunch of weeds growing in rotting mulch with a layer of plastic underneath. Removing the resulting mess is a PITA. Use brown paper underneath, if you really want a bark mulch aesthetic. It will last as long as the mulch, and you can till it in later. #gardening

@idzie@kolektiva.social The soil is sandy loam mixed with granite cobbles left by glaciers. The ecosystem has shifted radically over the years. Originally forests managed by controlled burns, then cleared for farming, now returned to mixed species: oaks, pine, red & sugar maple, shadbush & clethra sometimes found in the understory, asters every fall. No teasel. Deer, wild turkeys, and even bobcats are returning. Possums are moving in as winters warm. The original wolves have been replaced by hybrid wolf-coyotes.

@stavvers@masto.ai One of my relatives is allergic to celery, of all things. She carries a laminated card with illustrations of a celery bunch & someone keeling over while clutching their throat, along with warnings in several languages. She shows the card to the waiter and has him take it to the chef. It has helped a lot with accidental exposure. A similar card with shrimp & shellfish illustrations might help you.

Someone visiting my house noticed the beaver dam in the back yard and opined we should get rid of the beavers because they cause flooding. I really don't understand this knee-jerk hatred of wildlife doing its thing. We have no intention of hassling the beavers. We also own the land on both ends of the dam. That will make it harder for anyone else to hassle the beavers.

@idzie@kolektiva.social @rancholibertad@climatejustice.social I was going to guess slightly north of Lake Ontario, but that area isn't known for elevation.. There aren't a lot of places where the range of sugar maple, shagbark hickory, and balsam poplar overlap.

@clew@ecoevo.social I am extremely grumpy about my plastic encrusted mulch patch right now. Weeds, including a single poison ivy vine, grew on top of it. I pulled the vine, thinking I was taking enough precautions (gloves, washed right after.) I now have rashes that look like chemical burns, my arms are wrapped in gauze because the blisters are weeping, and I'm loopy from Benadryl.

@rootsandcalluses@mstdn.social There are situations where smothering the whole area might be the right choice. An elder neighbor let poison ivy and oriental bittersweet take over her garden. I'm so allergic to poison ivy I'd end up in the hospital if I tried to remove it by hand. Even if someone hit it with herbicide, the dead poison ivy vines would still be dangerous. If it were my garden I'd wait until winter, smother the area under paper & mulch, and let it lie fallow for a few years before replanting

It's hard being a very inquisitive dog confronted with strange human behavior. I've had a few small cobbles going in a rock tumbler for the past week. Tonight we decanted them and carefully wiped them off for inspection. Dog was mystified. We were so intent on the project. Why? He tried sniffing them. He tried tasting them. He poked at one with a paw and concluded it wasn't a ball. Why? Why? Why are the humans being so weird tonight? What's wrong with them? #dog

@clew@ecoevo.social I've usually used large sheets of paper, (newspaper or butcher's paper,) with mulch over it. I don't see why cardboard wouldn't work too. The paper usually lasts a year or two, by which point the mulch is decomposing anyway. I add another layer of paper and more mulch if I want to continue suppressing plant growth in that spot. Eventually it all decomposes.

This week I tested a new WiFi connected trail camera by leaving it on the ground outside my bedroom window. I was rather surprised to capture a very long beak briefly popping into view, followed by one hemisphere of a borb and some peet peet peet noises. I knew we have woodcocks in the area, but I had no idea they were poking around outside my window in the wee hours. #bird

@Moss@beige.party Maybe? The sizing chart is a mix of units. It claims the 2XL size is for a dog with a 45cm back. 22 kg would be a bit more reasonable than 22 pounds for a dog with that spine length. You still aren't going to get that suit wrapped around a normal sized Lab, though, especially not the bench Labrador whose chubby head is supposedly sticking out of it.

@ellane I can read it, but I'm of an age where I was forced to use nothing but cursive for three years of my schooling. I can see why this handwriting sample might flummox someone without practice reading cursive. There were some places where, without experience and context, I wouldn't have been able to tell where an m, n, i, w, or r made the transition into the neighboring letter.

In social media elsewhere, I got an ad for a dog rain suit with clear hood. The picture shows a Labrador wearing it. The size chart, however, says a 2XL (the largest size) is for dogs that max out at 22 pounds. Someone with very small dogs is very good with Photoshop.

Every spring I feel like a terrible nature steward. Last year it was the baby bunnies whose mother thought inside the dog run was a great place to park her litter. (The dogs agreed for their own reasons.) This year is is the rotted tree we left in place for the woodpeckers. The hollow is now deep enough that wood ducks are trying to nest in it. So far we have found 4 eggs that rolled out of the tree. Egg # 5 is now precariously balanced in the hollow. Monitoring with concern.
