It's here! Finally we're ready to officially announce "Becoming Stewards Where We Already Are". Four Saturdays in September, online: this is a four-part course on what changes when you stop treating yourself as standing outside the ecosystem you live in. You do not need land! A good part of this is the argument that your "site" is not your "property", but rather is every place, flow and relationship you can actually reach and affect, which for one person is six acres and for another is a balcony, a verge, a vacant lot, a restaurant's compost bucket, the woods behind the trailer park. The people nearest you are part of it too, and they are the largest part. Four sessions: how to observe the ground you can reach and what is worth observing rather than merely looking at, how to read what a growing system actually runs on including the inputs that arrive on a truck and are never counted, and how to plan something that feeds you without asking the place to subsidize you indefinitely. Half of every session is discussion, because eight people in eight different situations will teach each other things we could not. The examples come from the Ranch, as well as our experiences living in a variety of other ecosystems: the forests of Michigan, New York, Oakland, New Orleans, Tampa, Crestline: and learning that the transferable part was never the species list, it was the questions. We will not claim expertise in your climate but we will offer you the questions that build it. Eight seats, pay what you can, one seat at the top of the scale covers one at the bottom. Three tiers are available at the booking link below, pick the one you can afford OR send me a message if you cannot and I'll see what I can do! Saturdays 5 / 12 / 19 / 26 September, 15:00 UTC (8:00 Pacific), one hour each. [link] We'll be hosting this on Jitsi, and the link isn't live yet but will be added to your course registration and sent our via email before the event. ALL of the materials from the class will be published and available for free once it's done. We still firmly believe that knowledge should always be free. The value in the paid class is the discussion, the access to immediate questions answered, and knowing that you're helping support the Ranch, but you know that you can always email us questions and we're happy to share. Ultimately signing up is a choice and we've tried to make it accessible but understand wholly that not everyone can access it, which is why even if you cannot everything will be available regardless :) https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=40066932 #Stewardship #ClimateJustice #Climate #ClimateAction #Ecosystem #Ecology #LandStewardship #RanchoDeLaLibertad

There's something called the Cadiz pipeline that could potentially drain every aquifer in the Mojave to continue supplying water to industrial farms and coastal cities like LA and San Diego. Given that Star and I were displaced from those exact cities, well, it's complicated! We now have nowhere to go if the water runs out, and it's getting harder and harder to reconcile the world even within our spiritual framework. It feels, sometimes, like we're marching towards inevitable death, and settlers say things like "well, shouldn't you just move?" Because your entire existence is predicated on running from your problems, and making them someone else's problem. And when those problems follow you, instead of learning, you just repeat the cycle and leave again. All there is to do is hope that we can inspire folks here to plant trees, that some of the microclimate rainfall patterns will return if we do a good enough job, and to hold our breath and wait. This isn't apathy: the pipeline is going through, they've successfully hopped the environmental reviews they were supposed to go through and gotten approval. We're choosing to focus on what we can do, and on doing the best we can do, rather than spending our time running. This is going to happen everywhere eventually -- maybe we'll be an example of a way to resist, or maybe we'll be the first to perish. Only time will tell I guess! And while this may be written in melodramatic language a bit, just know that this is very real, and not the least bit an exaggeration of what we're really facing out here.

We accidentally created a mutant cross-pollinated squash. I'd heard of this, and perhaps it's happened to us before with the fodder squashes from last season (those were dreadful to me but the pigs didn't care, I thought it was more about where they were grown than their genetics), but this time it's... delightful. Most likely one of our ronde de nice summer squashes crossed with delicata, since those are what happened to grow nearby, and it's sweet like a delicata winter squash but with the texture of a summer squash. It also might be happening with another, since the "zuchinni" growing nearby is, uh, well, it looks like nothing I've seen before. I'll post a thread of mutant squash pictures soon.

In my defense, I didn't think any of this was going to grow, since these seeds were all so old. I let my children seed blast this basin thinking "well, we'll get what we get!" and then nothing germinated for three weeks so I figured it was a lost cause. Then we manured it to prepare it for the next season and, well, now we have six foot long squash vines and more fruit than we're going to know what to do with when it comes time to harvest them. Happy accidents!

Hey friends, per our recent mutual aid request, here's our update. If you follow @Siiin@pagan.plus, you've already seen something like this, but I figured folks here may be able to support, too, and we're also launching some Ranch related stuff to try to bring in more cash that you all may find exciting! We've added a page on our website with a service we've dubbed "homestead coaching", but which is more like permaculture design on a much more intensive scale. Even if you live far away, we'd love to hear your needs and help you design systems, choose perennials for your climate, reconsider your water use and how you plant for climate resilience, and create a closed-loop system on your land. If you're on a smaller plot and still want help climate-proofing your garden or urban homestead? That's fine! We'd love to shift the pricing to reflect the smaller scale. If you know anyone who may be interested, feel free to share. We're in urgent need of funds, and we really do have a lot of value we can share. We will continue releasing newsletters, and paid subscribers there also help bump us towards feeding ourselves! Thanks friends, hoping you're staying cool out there. https://rancholibertad.com/homestead-coaching/ #Farming #UrbanFarming #Homestead #Homesteading #Gardening #Farm #SmallFarm #FoodSovereignty #Resilience #ClimateChange

Alright friends, we worked to get this out today at what is for most of you the beginning of one of the hottest weeks in your region. We're used to living through temperatures sometimes as high as 126 F and often over 110 -- and we've learned a lot. Not a single one of these tips involves running your air conditioner or making expensive alterations to your home, because we understand that all of us are living through climate change with whatever resources we currently hold and nothing more. Stay cool and hydrated, friends! https://rancholibertad.com/how-to-live-garden-through-extreme-heat/ #Gardening #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice #ExtremeHeat #HeatDome #HeatWave #ClimateCrisis #CliimateAction

Sometimes folks are like "what qualifications do you have for talking about [native plants, permaculture, closed-loop farming, rainfall patterns, survival strategy, etc]?" And I think that's so wild. There are folks out here with biology and environmental science degrees that no doubt comprehend a topic through a framework I don't, at least not on that level, and they're making policy and running the environmental nonprofits in this region. But there's something really fucked up about that: they're *not* the experts. They're the people pushing the "all invasive plants are bad, rip them all out" agenda, which mirrors pretty hideously the "all immigrants are bad, lock them all up" agenda -- and both share the SAME massive blind spot of refusing to evaluate the reality of relational structure and determine where entities fit and how they benefit system OR how to deal with them holistically and ethically *as* beings when evaluating the drawbacks of their existence in a given space that perhaps cannot support them *right now*. The point here is that it's really really really easy to think you're really decolonizing your stewardship efforts and social behavior and then fall into something like "science is good, science helps us, therefore anyone who isn't a scientist shouldn't be making any decisions" which is kind of like "well those non-white, non-land-owning, non-male people seem pretty dumb and I'm sure nothing they say or believe or know has any value". ESPECIALLY when it comes to talking to a duo of people where one of the people really pushing the ideas and policy and knowledge format is literally an Indigenous person who has lineage ties to this land. The other consideration here is that there's enormous potential for hyper-local knowledge and sharing the framework for obtaining hyper-local knowledge to be more beneficial than the kind of generalities that are taught by necessity in universities (the patterns of which are rife with settler assumptions, also). What works here in our Valley is not what works in Morongo Valley, but the framework for accessing what works is the same, and so we share *that* for folks not to claim we somehow know everything about all ecosystems, like the folks with degrees do, but to literally empower all of you to make the most important decisions within your ecosystem and community that no one else can come in and make for you without probably making some critically dangerous assumptions. The idea of people with more knowledge on a topic is not a new one, but the concept that tenured, degreed up experts are the ONLY people who should ever speak on a topic is relatively new to post-industrial societies and quite frankly it's dangerous and an extraordinarily sharp blade to wield against folks who are actively attempting to heal land that isn't well understood and whose history is actively suppressed.

The bats last night were spectacular. I kid you not I saw one the size of a raven in the garden. Dozens swooping and dipping and maneuvering throughout the West garden, nibbling on all the odd flying insects buzzing around.

I am so curious where the bats roost during the day - it cannot be on our property so they must fly down from the mines in the mountains. I very much wish to make some bat boxes or similar encouragement for them, they're my favorite wildlife I think.

The July newsletter for paid subscribers is going to be an introduction to going zero-waste: what that means, some considerations for doing it, and why you want to keep food out of the landfill. Now, none of this seems very groundbreaking, perhaps, but I'm going to get into some of the deeper considerations of not just "what" to compost, but how to even go further and truly utilize everything to fill further needs in your own environment. As always, we're going to take our specific experience as a case study and offer some considerations for what might work even better for *you* in your specific situation. We're lucky enough to have had a significant amount of support come through from all of you, and to be steadily building some potential income streams here. However, we are no longer operating with a corporate job at all, so newsletter subscriptions, direct sales of our products, and tattoo bookings *are* what's keeping us going right now. So if you have $5, consider bumping up your free subscription to a paid one and helping us maintain an almost completely closed-loop farm and continue educating folks in a resource-stressed region how to better utilize resources and give back to the land while feeding themselves and surviving our harsh climate. This *is* the work that needs to be done right now. I look forward to getting this one out for you all! And thank you very much for your continued support. #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice #CommunitySovereignty #Sovereignty #AntiFascist #Grassroots #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #ZeroWaste

Preparing to shut down the garden for summer as temps just hit 110s (after a week of perfect 70s no less). Pulled what corn I could, only four ears matured this season but we'll dry and store it and try again at the end of summer. The squash are still holding on, most of the sunflowers are about ready to cut and bag, and I'll be caging the tomatoes to see if they'll produce through the summer. Our kale is little but I'll be cutting it this week, and there are a few onions to pull and age also. With that, the garden will be just about ready to turn over to the chickens for the season! Nopales harvest is officially done: our yield was 14 pounds all said, and I could have cut more while still leaving pads to grow on the cacti, but I maxxed out my capacity for cleaning and preparing them for storage. We gave some away, have some still fresh in the fridge (what we haven't cooked already) and I have 7 quarts of nopalitos fermenting on the shelf. It's so odd how inverted our seasons are compared to most of you: as you enter your season of fertility we are mostly shutting down, preparing to rest the land through its harshest months before having another growing season in late summer. Though we aren't done! The mesquite pods come mature around the solstice, and in July or August las tunas (prickly pear fruits) will be ready for harvest also. #Gardening #Zone9 #Mojave #Permaculture #Farm #SustainableFarming #IndigenousFoods

@fey@pagan.plus Oh of course, I completely understand! Definitely will be glad to share out the materials afterwards and if this goes well it might be a once-a-summer thing since once we start on-site classes those will be closed for the summers, so online classes make sense! Unfortunately that's the busier outdoor time for everyone else, but maybe that will let folks get inspired to get outside while they can and see things differently! I don't know!

Paid post just released today, providing a framework for starting a zero-waste lifestyle using the kitchen as a starting point! We give a thorough examination of what our key waste-producing habits likely are and several concrete solutions for each -- considering which are going to ultimately reduce waste at all points in the process and not just help us reduce the amount *we* throw in the trash. Please remember that every paid subscription helps us keep the ranch running in lieu of other income, so that $5 a month means a whole lot to us! If you can, we hope you consider it. But either way, I hope those of you already paying get value from this one! https://rancholibertad.com/start-a-zero-waste-lifestyle-beginning-in-your-kitchen/ #ZeroWaste #Sustainability #ClimateChange #DirectAction

"I bought a NEW electric car and installed new solar panels on my roof with great big Tesla batteries and good lord I'll save some money in seven years if we don't talk about the car payment and installing the EV charger in my garage and the software I now pay for for the life of the gar (which won't be more than ten years anyway). But you know what, the break-even for the planet was on DAY ONE so whoduhthunkit I'm giving myself a good ol' pat on the back"

I see this, the stupidest of all takes, at least ten times a day here on ol' Mastodon.

I get real tired of saying this but let me try one more time, a little louder: THINGS REQUIRE THINGS TO BE MANUFACTURED. Buying new stuff is *not* *ever* an ecological good. EVER. Yes, I said ever. No, not even your solar panels.

Use. Less. Shit.
Stop. Caring. About. Status.
Break. The. Machine.

And save the pat on the back. You've yet to do anything difficult, or which puts you in a position to have to stand against the grain.

Do better.

Hello friends of the so-called Fediverse,

Rancho de la Libertad is attempting to hire a farm manager. It's a role related to project management and administrative assisting, but ideally we're looking for someone either stoked to train up their animal husbandry and gardening skills or someone who already has some knowledge in these areas.

Please read all bullets, as this may be one role but it also could be two or so smaller roles if folks find this with specialized experience in one or more key areas!

We need assistance with tasks ranging from food inventorying and ordering things when they run out to:
• helping manage a calendar of key events related to livestock breeding, planting, and harvesting
• helping to research weather trends for the year both locally and regionally as they relate to planting
• communicating with vendors, other potential hands for the farm (including helping find and vet applicants for ad hoc jobs as required)
• building a website for our rabbitry, potentially managing ARBA registration
• building a real website for the Ranch that we can self-host
• for the right, trusted person, potentially helping us manage finances better (I've been trying and failing to keep track of all of our spending on infrastructure)
• helping manage and organize key events at the Ranch including Full Moon Dinners and our Wheel of the Year events
• errand running (occasionally)

Ideally this person will be local and willing to be on site for some training and some crucial tasks. If someone wishes to just apply to build us a website, though, this could be a remote gig for the right person. Ultimately, we're looking for someone who cares about what we're doing, wants the experience, has some general background knowledge of animal husbandry and either agriculture, permaculture, or ecological regeneration OR is interested in doing the work to get up to speed. What we really need is someone who can come in and build us a system for doing things.

Initially we can offer $20-25 per hour for the right person and around 10 or so hours per week (not always on site). There's some room for this to grow, and potential for space to live on the Ranch after some time getting to know and trust one another.

So! Please boost away and feel free to share on other socials we don't have if you have em. We really would like to find someone local to the Joshua Tree or Morongo Basin, CA area but maybe you're a nomad who wants some extra cash or you can do part of this remotely - let us know!

**Edit: forgot to add that if you or someone you know is interested, please email us at ranchodelalibertad@protonmail.com to further discuss and have an official job description sent over

**I forgot to mention: this job is friendly to folks with physical or other disabilities, I suppose insofar as you can get around (transit out here isn't great but it exists, even way out here there's a shuttle to and from town two days a week). This is not a physical labor job and doesn't require a ton of time onsite.

*** We are so willing to pay under the table and prefer it if that helps you keep your tax burden low or keep critical social benefits that you'd otherwise lose with additional income ***

@idzie@kolektiva.social I reside within a corralada (fence) of mountains, which hang dusty blue at sunset and sunrise. The valley splays out in a vast expanse of pioneering creosote against light-colored sand, and in the broad valley it is deceptively void of life. In amongst the desert saltbrush, creosote, and sacred datura however are small holes dotting the dry landscape from which at dusk and dawn emerge the crepuscular residents of this land: ground squirrels of many varieties, jackrabbits, and burrowing owls. Within the expansive, craggy mountains however lives white sage, lavender, tobacco and brilliant smoketrees which seem to glow purple after rains. In summer, bats flit about the mesquite at night devouring insects while in the winter the lone song of a great white owl can sometimes be heard.

I think sometimes we come across as too harsh or cynical, but that's precisely because we know what's possible when we let go of certain pretenses and start doing the work. We know we can do it, collectively. We might not have the power to right every wrong, to save all things, but we can and should keep trying to cultivate more and more wilderness, more and more biodiversity, more and more sanctuary for all beings. And perhaps in the midst of it all we find that this was the very thing we were seeking all along.

Just released the free May newsletter, titled "On Food Sovereignty". It is at once a cautionary tale and clarion call for the work we must do for liberation - which cannot only include marching but which must include cultivation. Indigenous peoples have fought this fight now for generations, and it's time that others understand its importance and join in creating networks of aid rooted in ground and not the economies of empire.

https://rancholibertad.com/on-food-sovereignty/

This month's paid newsletter will be an original recipe honoring nopales, and trust me, it's worth paying for (and supporting our project as a result).

*Edit: reworded the clause in parentheses at the end, and fixed the title of the newsletter because my brain can't be trusted these days.

@emsenn@kolektiva.social @AndyDearden@mastodon.green This feels critically important, and really difficult to navigate at the same time. On the one hand, everything you're saying is 100% and I have no critique, and it encapsulates a *feeling* that we lack the capacity for transmitting in such a way as to ground in the philosophical basis you have here, so yes, thank you! On the other hand, there are layers of nuance, at least as we see this. First, there is a sense (for some of us) that there *is* some radicalism in denying the hegemony of income-through-platform on things like Instagram. We *could* probably do ok on Instagram, the farm aesthetic, etc etc, and probably X as well, and increase our capacity for financing this project through increased exposure. We choose not to because whilst the narrative of the "pure frontier" of the Fediverse *is* colonial, *is* mostly run by white people (and to be frank even some of the Indigenous narratives on this platform seem dominated by mostly white-passing Indigenous folk from vastly different sociocultural backgrounds than us), and while all of that frustratingly impacts how we can navigate this platform... Our presence on Instagram or X also feels wrong, given not just the *politics* of the platforms (which seems to be the biggest critique by folks on this platform but to us that seems to miss the point a bit) but the *technologies*, their ownership, the necessity to commodify whatever it is we wish to share. Substack is, as I can tell, mildly different because of the reality of long form content vs. short form video or even "microblogging" content, though I'm sure (or rather, would be curious to know) if you ever feel that that platform does the same, in a way: requires the castration of message, the transmutation into "content" in order to be granted the privilege of platformization or exposure? Because to us there is a degree of frustration in either case: the Fediverse AND the corporate socials all require that to transmit our knowledge and experience we must placate their end user: folks embedded in a colonial cultural hegemony who, despite their own claims, generally wish to be made to feel good rather than challenged. Though, at least on the Fedi there is, I suppose, the capacity to argue with things like moderation decisions publicly, to spin up a new account easily, and to perhaps maintain some degree further of deoupling from our legal identities (though we know privacy here is almost as much a farce as it is elsewhere). And I know all of this is mostly a tangential reply to the OP, and not necessarily a direct one, so we hope that's welcome.

Shown here is the spillway on the other side of the channel (channel in progress still in this image) planted to oats, vetch, field peas, and tilling radish. The spillways will be most effective if held by perennial grass roots, but the soil underneath will be benefitted by a bit of decompaction and root matting in the meantime while I forage another season's worth of native grass seeds to sow.

Some else *ahem* @emsenn@kolektiva.social says this here a lot but uh

The purity politics do get tiring. Not like anyone expects you to really think like "who will this offend" about everything, but what if we sat down, took a deep breath and said "in what ways might my post reiterate a point that incessantly talks over the people I maybe don't want to be talking over? In what way am I centering myself and way of life by assuming that x kind of action *must mean* x negative intention?" and then starting a "discussion" that's really a feedback loop of whitecenteredness and virtue signalling as opposed to something that gets anywhere. And again, not everything *needs* to be productive, but I'm calling out a very specific kind of post that is necessarily performing some kind of leftist or progressive politics but which also is extraordinarily narrow in its perspective to the detriment of others.

That's all. Because I see a lot of performative allyship but very little legitimate questioning of biases, and I think y'all are capable of more!

If you're feeling like donating to an Indigenous land steward and his family today while the city wastes tax dollars on fireworks that pose huge wildfire risk in the midst of an already extreme summer -- well, now's the time! And we love you, and let's all try to get through this.

!!!! ATTENTION: URGENT MUTUAL AID REQUEST !!!! Hello friends! We really don't like doing this, but we haven't gotten paid and despite the company's insistence originally that that pay would come Monday, now it's kind of seeming like... they just don't have the money and might not be paying anyone but they aren't doing layoffs, they're just expecting everyone to keep working. We have three kids to feed! We have animals we need to keep fed and watered! We're a critical source of food for a very food-insecure community of folks and now those folks will be going without, too if we can't keep things going. We've been in some scary financial situations in the last few years but this is the worst because we had absolutely no time whatsoever to plan for it and I've already delayed bills due on the 1st by several days thinking they'd be able to be paid on Monday. Our initial goal is $2000 which really just pays the house and electric bill which are both due immediately. Anything extra is going to groceries and gas, so please donate anything you can. We live 16 miles from the nearest town and temps are regularly in the 110s right now -- walking to town for provisions is not feasible so this is all very important. You can go through Siin's ko-fi because they don't take fees or the Ranch website has a spot for donations: https://rancholibertad.com/donatehttps://ko-fi.com/sigillosacro #MutualAid #UrgentMutualAid #IndigenousMutualAid #Community #RanchoDeLaLibertad

@idzie@kolektiva.social Yeah that actually makes a load of sense! I'm not familiar enough with Canadian geography so part of me originally was going to say "or Canada" but then I felt ridiculous because Canada is huge. But it makes sense that you're in a region that's close to both of the regions I was imagining, just north of some imagined border. It sounds beautiful there, even considering that the winters must be harsh, I consider you quite lucky to live in such a region! (Though I'm unsure if you'd qualify it the same way, perhaps it's the rose-colored glasses from living in the land of eternal drought ;) )

@idzie@kolektiva.social Hmm. I would say Great Lakes Region but you mentioned elevation. Somewhere in upstate NY or otherwise the northern East Coast of the US?

@raphaelmorgan @dbattistella oh that's okay! There was no offense. I need to re-update our bio if I plan to be active on this account again, right now it has very little useful information. There was no convenient way for you to have that info without scrolling our post history looking for it

@raphaelmorgan @dbattistella Quite literally preaching to the choir, as we're an Indigenous owned regenerative farm, so we tend to agree

@VisualStuart@pdx.social alternative front ends for YT also used to exist that made it so you (and anyone you shared content with) could view things from YT not actually on YT. One was Invidious, and it used to work well but I'm uncertain about if YT has killed those projects, as I haven't used it in maybe a year or so. Would be safer than ever using YT on any personal device, though, so might be worth looking into if anyone on this thread cares to *edit: typo
