@SmudgeTheInsultCat hello, I am a doctor in a film. Not only do I know everything about my specialism, I also know everything about all other specialisms and a whole bunch of really esoteric and obscure diseases as well. I work all the time, never have a day off, never sleep. My colleagues seem to have time to play golf, have marriages and extra marital affairs and play in jazz bands. Somewhere along the line I made poor choices.

@leavex whilst technically correct, I'd argue that there is a burden of care required by Signal or any other app. Why is pin verification required? Is a PIN an appropriate validation method? How is it that users could think that the phishing method be easily mistaken for a genuine request? I've been a Signal user for some years, and I'm pretty digitally literature. It's not clear how PIN verification helps security, or why it is required when it's required.

Just think, now every single site that has an #embedded #tweet view in an article is no longer displaying that tweet.

* At best, #Elon can show whatever he wants on it's place, tweet-by-tweet from subtle change to full-on counter-factual or malvertising.
* At worst, it's a vector for Elon #musk to run whatever *code* he wants on your site.

Used an ? You're in the best case camp.
Used a #Twitter-hosted embed ? Good luck.</p>

In case you're wondering, today is #ely #eel day. Where the citizens of this small cathedral city head down to the waterside to glimpse their aquatic overlords. We sing, the children dance and much Pimms is consumed. Later, the rituals will commence.

Replying to

@leavex at the point of use, the message simply says "verify your PIN" and you type in a PIN. No context why you need to do this. You can dismiss it a few times without apparent adverse effect. It puts the user in the mind of "enter PIN, get it out of the way" rather than "why is it asking me to do this", which is a boon for phishing. i.e. if the user just enters the PIN without thought when prompted, find a way to put "verify your PIN" in front of that user and wait.

@paninid ... To stretch the analogy a bit: the high street already had 10,000 cafes on it. None of them made much money. Then overnight, all of those cafes became almost identical, and started losing money at a slightly slower pace. The human run Thai restaurant / bodega / 24hr bagels did well for a while. Of course, it's much more nuanced and complex an analogy could ever reflect. Sigh 😔

@lolennui@mstdn.social True Pop-tarts are effectively extinct in the wild. If you _do_ see one, it's likely to be one of the many hybrids that came of close proximity to other, generic, toaster-pastries. These new sub-species are much hardier, nervous around humans, and generally smaller. These characteristics means they're harder to hunt, and offer less frosting and/or filling than farmed varieties. There is hope for future generations, as some conservation agencies are now planning reintroduction schemes.
