@afeinman@wandering.shop Facebook knowingly targeted kids with addictive behaviours. So instead of telling them to knock it off, we're telling kids they're not allowed to do something. And punishing all the adults, whether or not they engage with Facebook. So... We're punishing everyone, except Facebook. (Who actually asked for these laws...)

"AI companies will be barred from using Australian books, music, art or news to build or train AI without the consent and control of the author." Sorry, PM, I do not see how you can enforce this _when they already have_. Past tense. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-15/federal-politics-live-blog-tobacco-july-5/106916356#live-blog-post-319145 #Australia #AI

Labor to force data centres to minimise water, underwrite own power — as it happened

The PM has announced new artificial intelligence data centres will be forced to underwrite or supply their own power and minimise their use of water under new AI standards to be introduced to parliament.

@AncTreat5358@lgbtqia.space ND. And... Sometimes? Gamifying chore reminders can help if I get stuck in a rut. But I'd go looking for one that is a game, on purpose. 99% of the time? I want things that get out of the way ASAP. A decent search is what I want from a shopping app, not achievements.

@freddy@social.security.plumbing Cancelling a decade of tech debt, is comparable to cancelling a gym membership. Its a rough road, with all sorts of people being friendly and telling you to go away, and that no one wants to help you. Doable, sure. But a slog through hell.

@glyph@mastodon.social I went through the nocode crazy of software generators in the 90s. It was... Similar. Everything had to be done that way. Managers could finally build products from scratch. Everybody had to be a wizard. And today, everyone has to vibe. Until the costs come in, and then back to things as usual.

Me: You've spent the last decade telling me to suck up mine. You're not really going to get sympathy, here. Advice, sure.

Dad: ... Oh. I guess I did.

@Axolotl1@gaygeek.social Well, I can tell you what's wrong. Not necessarily how to fix it. You need a driver to use this WiFi. Which probably means working out the model of the wifi, finding the driver, downloading it somehow, and then installing it.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town I think a lot of the jokes come out of cultural frustrations, rather than linguistic differences. I ask what needs to be done. My coworker asks me to to do the needful. They haven't explained what needs to be done. Usually, because their culture prevents them from saying "I don't know." or from instructing someone they see above themselves in the hierarchy.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town It can sometimes be a dog whistle, but to be honest, most of what I see is just frustration. Someone who doesn't know your culture, who doesn't know saving face, isn't going to comprehend why they have so many issues, until someone tells them. And usually, a society with saving-face, cannot actually tell you about it. Racism tends to rise, when those misunderstandings are left to fester, that when it is finally made clear, it is no longer good enough

#WritersCoffeeClub 3/4: Have you studied writing?

I studied history. It plays a little into writing, because telling a story is something we've been doing for a very long time. Sure, genres change and grow, our understanding of impacts on audiences change, and how people react changes.

But at its heart, writing is still communication, and communication is the skill we all love to suck at.

@markwyner That one is a Visa/Mastercard requirement. If paste is allowed, then copy can be re-enabled, and they've had a lot of issues with malicious extensions trying. They could always shift to any of the other actually secure things, like TOTP, hardware tokens, etc. and then be accessible. But nah. Gotta keep things looking the same.
