Core elements of me, in the chronological order in which they came to be pieces of my personal puzzle:
Musician, Techie, Progressive, Problem solver, Husband, Trainer, Father
Let’s exchange opinions, supported by appropriately tagged facts and anecdotes! Let’s do so with as much humor as humility, and with a goal that both of us walk away feeling we are better off having had that conversation.
Watchwords: Learn; Grow; Share
I was just trying to play a word game, and it rejected the word "oodle". Like, the word "oodles" is real, but apparently, you can't have one "oodle".
Any other words like that? Like you can have a fence, but not one fent?
Holy shit, one of my oldest friends--same age as me, but we've been friends since Carter was president--just made a video for a song he released last year.
And the song's pretty compelling on its own, but the video takes it to another level.
Please check it out:
I used em-dashes—lots of them!!—before AI made them uncool.
Color me naive, but the change of language from "soldiers" to "war-fighters" by this administration as sad for the future as it makes me angry for the present.
Ugh. Not a great email to receive from one's elderly parents:
"We really like the Toyota Prius for its excellent fuel economy, but they definitely don’t hold up well under impact."
Suddenly, inspired by @atpfm@mastodon.social , I’ve got the Disney theme song stuck in my head, but changed: “when you wish upon a monkey’s paw…”
Siri has told me in no uncertain terms that it is possible to configure an MCP in Siri to give it new expertise. But it is not true.
Rewatching Desperately Seeking Susan for the first time since I saw it, when it first came out in theaters.
And once again, I was pleased and surprised to see a young Giancarlo Esposito in a brief but impactful scene early in the flick.
So cool.
For the most part, at work, I'm responsible for documentation and training. However, that puts me in a good place to make promotional videos, and we've just released my latest.
I have to admit that I'm biased, but I think it came out pretty well.
If John Ternus has any courage, #Apple will partner with #HunterBiden to promote their line of laptops.
I don’t do this often, but I’m reposting this because I thought it was clever.
I’ve not yet seen the Odyssey. The dialog,
I hear, is mostly modern. How, then is the me-
ter? Full of iambs, I hope, in groups of six? Or no?
Of those who follow me, I ask: the script, pray tell,
is it in epic verse?
I remember the day I realized that, at light speed, time dilation is infinite, so when a photon extinguishes on my retina as I'm looking at the Andromeda galaxy, I know that it traveled 2.5 million years to get here, but from its own perspective, literally no time has passed.
For some reason, I was filled with intense sadness at that realization.
That was the same sadness that I felt when Hodor finally realized the sole purpose of his life, determined in the past by then-future events.
With all the talk about The Odyssey, it's worth remembering that Christopher Nolan's early masterpiece, "Memento", presaged how AI works with context tokens, and how that can be manipulated.
Oh, I guess I've been talking a bunch about app store and xcode stuff, but I've left out the link for the #testflight.
I was listening to someone talk about what sounded dangerously close to an emotional connection to their AI assistant, and I couldn't help but think of that song from the 80s by The Tubes, "She's a Beauty".
Watching the video again and listening to the lyrics, it's actually a really good parable for the AI age. The video captures even more applicable problematic elements than are apparent in the lyrics.
Disingenuous is really not great, since that means they're not being honest about their motives nor even the information they're conveying. But again, the impact is limited if it's not mixed with the other "in" words.

And the last one is invasive. Again, not great. Like don't bother me when I don't want to be bothered. But you know, sometimes that's just a matter of bad timing or bad luck, and on its own, it's not that big a deal, IMHO.
But combine that with the others, and it's pretty bad. Like keep your uninformed, disingenuous, incurious nature to yourself. Don't bother me with it.

I’m pretty sure that with Trump’s new hairpiece, he’s fully transformed the republicans into the Whig party.
Ok. Maybe I’m just slow.
But in the show, Silo, it seems like the protocol-enforcing computer is repeatedly saying the following:
1: If you don’t do what I say, the silo will destroy itself through violence.
2: To prevent that from happening, I will kill everyone in the silo. So do what I say.
Am I wrong? Do the “safeguards” make sense to you? If so, please explain it to me like I’m five.
The problem with Blanche saying, "Sure, sure, the 'weaponization fund' is dead, go ahead and confirm me!" is that he lies about everything.
Once the Senate confirms him, what stops him from just going ahead with plan 'a'?
My new password for everything is “Cleopatra Jagadish Chandra Bose”, FYI.
TFW your elderly father sends you an email that's richtig funny, but is just a lightweight-jokey way of saying that something terrible has happened.
I just downloaded bIRC from the app store. I haven't used IRC in so many years. Decades, really.
So I joined IRCNet, and created a channel called #appdotnet.
Literally nothing happening there, but if anyone cares to pop in and say hi, if I'm at my computer when you join, I'll say hi back...
Incurious is fine in the same way. We can't all pursue knowledge about everything. But in broad strokes, if someone is generally incurious, it's not great. It suggests that they don't even want to move out of their own ignorance.
But as long as they're honest about what they know and don't know, and about what they about and don't care about, that's a little better. And as long as their incurious nature doesn't impede other people, that's fine. They can live in a hole if they like.

Argh. My tummy is rumbly.
And here's the problem: there are so many possible causes.
1. Last night I had a sandwich made with deli meat which had a "best by" date of yesterday, so it was at the end of its rope.
2. I just started taking a new multivitamin this morning.
3. I'm in my mid-50s and things are unpredictable.
4. My government dismantled a program which had been limiting the spread of digestive parasites, and now there are digestive parasites EVERYWHERE!
Sigh. It's probably #2.
OK, that's the rant. It's inspired by some insipid (hey, another "in" word!) troll in my life who constantly comes to me claiming to want to achieve things, when (a) it's clear he hasn't even tried, (b) has no idea how it would work, (c) hasn't done even a second of research, and (d) history shows that none of his supposed goals has resulted in any tangible output.
The sum total of his efforts can be cataloged in the hours wasted by those around him gullible enough to engage.
