not to be straight-phobic (i love the straights) but sometimes i forget how they don't get at all the social subtexts, the subcultural lores, the insanity of the everyday, the excitement of performativity, the crypto-euphoria of codes and tropes.

growing up through various queers communities unlearning relearning new clichées and energies and mixing them.

like you know from queer situationship archetypes, online trans discord, lesbian masc fuckboy energy, straight t4t, fem4fem succubus, sex po kinky scene rave party, monster-like drag cultures, gay-dolls, autogynephilia reappropriation, top-bottom, sub-dom, butch & futch, lesbian-transmasc/fem alliances, cynical biphobia or queerphobia, attention-whore jester bi, shy autistic genderless transmascs, shane lesbians, cat/puppy girls, voguing, trauma-slut meme admin, gamer girls named lilith, blahaj femboys, spices-named nonbinaries, chasers & trades, lesbians harm-wrestling, nerd polycules, litteraly some vampires, dyke4fag pet-like relationship, transmasc bodybuilder baby-girling the lesbians, fanfiction whores, very-mean-gays, charismatic praise kink doll, etc etc

and then i try to communicate something to some straight and i can see their brain going like gougou gaga so wait woman not really woman is mean and you like oh i like when men are nice

two other important points. first is that the ethymology of slut litteraly means dirty or stinky or untidy. it became a slur for promiscious women because of the kitchen labor and a clothes named the cover-slut to not be dirty while cooking, so slut is like from the dirtyness of the kitchen to sexualising women which is super interesting to me. the tongs out with sparkly horny eyes, is it for the dirty food or for sex. other point is that community or communing is seen as stinky attitude. like borrowing your friends clothes, asking someone else for food, sleeping together. so yeah sharing in precarity feels / is seen as stinky because it breaks the individualist cleaness one can afford, the freshness you buy through capitalism and privileges. like communism or anarchism is soooo stinky. #stinkysummer

as an horror movie fan, there is this thing that slightly annoy me with people who don't often watch horror, that as soon the movie is finished there is an immediate need for ranking the scary factor of it, often to say that in the end it wasn't really scary (as they thought it would be).

horror to me is interesting because it's a genre misunderstood for a sensation. and it's a very codified genre, in which most movies, even the more artsy experimental ones, heavily rely on characters tropes and cinematographic codes . which is also often why the tasteful film lovers often dislike horror because they associate the their overdone up-cycling of codes and methods as something superficial, generic, that lacks of depth, creativity or reasoning. when codes start being shared by a mass of media it can easily become vulgar. but it's also why i am so fascinated with horror as a genre, in the same way i nurture a singular relationship with gender or language.

horror becomes powerful by repeatedly creating senses of familiarity through the uses of codes, then breaking it. which makes it incredibly contextual: an "effective" horror movie mostly is so because of the horror meta or momentum of that time, and audience expectations.

crazy how artists (not restricted to digital art but like all art practices) are particularly stuck in mainstream social networks like instagram because "we need it to brand our work to pay rent, so this became where we build our career" while more and more people are actually just leaving those platforms. it feels silly to imagine a bunch of artists shouting in the hypercapitalist ruin-to-profit-loop mainstream social network "look what i just made its my new project". i say that without judgment, as i'm on insta myself (though i don't post about work only shitpost & impulsive thoughts and pics), but the idea that "artistic practices become an obstacle to social change, in the big schemes of thing" (?) in that sense is really silly

@QuentinJuhel might i bring some interesting perspective on what networking actually is about hihi? before network became synonim of capitalising (extracting value) from social relationship, it was a term used by black men worker in america to make solidarity and mutual support network in the work place (that made white people in power afraid). this history can be put in parallele to the ethymology of gossiping, which before it was used in a misoginistic way to mean bad negative women talks, it used to be about sharing oral form of knowledge in a situated and intimate way (folk medecine for abortion, who to trust in the village, etc), the misoginistic interpretation of gossip was a campain lead during the witch hunting in pre-modern england, because again people in power were afraid of those uncontralable network of radical information, in contrast with the "institutionnalised knowledge" made by the academics, the sciences, etc who were easier to control and gatekeep because of their centralised nature. if you read either networking or gossiping as making your own intimate and situated network to share radical knowledge, it's actually very badass and fundamental to any practice that isn't self-centered, and want to reach for social change or mutual empowerment. voila !!!!

horror game idea: the game is a browser, you explore the web, with added custom stuff like

* hidden ghostly inserted divs, that appears only if certain condition are met on current website (like one of them only appear if there are 3 lists elements on that page, or one of them only appear if an image is broken)
* jumpscare when pressing random link
* websites being eaten and disapearing entierly of the web, but you can bookmark them (using ressources you collect) so they don't dissapear
* an inventory with tools and weapon to protect yourself, you collect them on certain website
* a healthbar, or other stat bar, like clicking on hyperlinks uses stamina or magix
* fictional websites (only exist in this browser), you have to find all 12 of them (there on the ghostly inserted divs), and they all are like boss, like one is a link labyrinth, another is a puzzle where you need to open the inspector, another change depending on the time of the day

other than being very fun it would teach people to navigate the web in cool ways, and the speedrun would change every day because the web change everyday

Hello it's grumpy doriane that is going to die on her hill of fuck AI and is about to lecture everyone with her new little tale.

Something i sometimes hear (from people who are mostly against uses of LLM for say artistic practice) is that for the boring annoying stuff like administrative hell if it can help let's use it. Because there is no point in romanticising this type of task that was made with the intention to be an obstacle (legal or medical application, whatever). And I get, if it help it help.

But i am worried that individual shortcuts (like GPT prompt and summary) in laborious task can, in the long term, participate to normalise the inhuman obstacle they are. If more people make it through admin hell by using AI while laws and system worsen in the rise of fascism, it gives excuses to set it as the new expectation for all people. Individuals shortcut in masses impacts collective systems evolutions.
It's a similar story than with any automatisation of labor we can think of: it creates unhuman standards for the other humans that doesn't have the automatisation.

I say individual because, as much as it can be a survival or necessary tactic, there is a tendency, or a temptation, to make us falsely believe it has been solved because we solved it for ourselve, thanks to a technique.

"creative queer collective" oh you mean

* based on freelance practices, so based on the marketability and hype of their productions, leading to the commodification of queer struggle into an aesthetic or brand
* creating socio-economical traps by using terminologies and concepts that give a sense of safety or liberation from a system while perpetuating the same logic and biases of that system
* fake horizontality that without strong caring structures falls into exploitative, extractive and tokenisation mechanism of the most marginalized, often trans and poc.
* disillusioned empowerment when the collective get mainstream recognition that is used to hide unchecked self-criticality
* pushing forward the liberal logic of self-branding on individual identities as part of the work, participating into the vibe of "not being queer is uncool", leading to the coexistence of privileged young LGBTs having insecurities "they are not queer enough" while the visibly queers and precarious are getting killed and rights are being removed
* "a marketable image of resistance that leaves power structures intact"

im sorry babe but fuck "creative queer collective" i've been deceived enough and the wounds make me remember. i only believe in decentralized materialist liberation movements and autonomous structures for mutual support.

But if they can both supports the TT9 app @bread@post.lurk.org suggested (https://f-droid.org/packages/io.github.sspanak.tt9/) that's banger. Guess i'll go for one of them.

  • also how an obvious (since already there?) alternative is the use personal websites, with some form of aggregation implemented in the browser to create sense of connectivity, visibility, discoverability that can be necessary for economic reality of certain artistic practices, but that also swap a dependency for another (browsers, or browser-extensions), and that could look alike activitypub to some extend

All that said, I am still thinking of how the fediverse has potential for radicallity. Because what we could have is not the institutions to move as the main motor but the artists with influence moving AND bringing in their own scenes/crowds/people in dedicated instances. Like let the emo music scene make their own instance, and the tatoo artist make their own instance, or the DJs, etc. Because then they will be the ones leading collectively the slow (and difficult) evolution of their own infrastructure and culture! The institution could be welcome in, as an account, but not the ones to entirely decide of such evolution, which could invert or-rebalance some power relationships.

@oblomov @NIGHTEN that would be a super interesting study yes. i do think there is a lot of fake dependency there. It's the typical LinkedIn example like it can be a social obligation for some practices (obviously not artists) to be on it while they won't get any actual job opportunities from it. But the few gossipy data i got from friends are like: tatoo artist, DJ or bands within certain scenes, performance artists like dancers are particularly dependent of the fast-paced story-2-lineup-booking pipeline. I think practices that are less "booking for singular events" like graphic design or digital art or whatever are maybe slightly easier to emancipate of those platform?

@detours_anachroniques @oblomov @NIGHTEN i mean when i ask my friend who are using instagram for their art practice it's really not to sell art as a commodity, if they sell books, visuals, or plastic artwork it's not through instagram. what they need it for is for discoverability and collaboration opportunity: what i was explaining of someone showing your profile to someone else who is part of an instituons that can "book" you, or give you some subsidy or opportunity.

@xenophora yeah totally, abstract quest for ethical purity is a diversion from actual materialist change! everyone need to do their path and universal pure solution are a lie. that's true, the big city as you say came with its own rules: algorithmically driven competition and attention span alienation. but as a fact, it created entirely new media culture... generations of memes, success story and horrible story, alongside a fair range of materialist projects who used it as a tactic: like many activism project, street protests or political pedagogy have been boosted through the alienating street of big city. Nowadays, it's not only a platform that we need to detach of, but a culture - that's even harder, especially for those who experienced material change (individual or collective) through such media culture.

@xenophora I deeply agree. I've been giving talk about how "replacement isn't an alternative" in software / social networks world. because we need to exit cycle of replacement all together, like example: switching from instagram to bluesky... But what i find interesting then is that we leave the field of purely techno-criticism and enter human relationship, with socio-economical systems that are digital, but also infrastructural and also cultural. like it isn't only about the technical characteristic of a platforms (let's develop a new system) but how we as human create relationships through software that needs to be examined (sensible and honest discussions). It is more difficult, so i understand how you are bothered witnessing those cycles, but it is the actual place to fight for me, and my good tools have been feminist pedagogy & situated knowledge.

@detours_anachroniques @oblomov @NIGHTEN i think it depends the culture! some art practices are more anchored into digital social fabric, like they benefit a lot from the connectedness of a social network. when people go to a club event they will tag the DJ in their story, or have a new tatoo and tag the tatoo artist. For that to work on the web you'll need not only the artist to have a small website but also everyone else so they have their own space within which they can link the artist which isn't the case. But if your work is mostly being contained by collectives or institutions instead of individuals then those might have a website through which they would link you yess!

@xenophora you mean for you it's like an ethical decision of stoping art as a career all together or staying on toxic platform, and if it is then you'd just stop art as a career? that's an answer i guess, although i do think there are third or fourth options hihi like i don't think it is impossible to escape! I guess there is a difference between a dependency that can trigger material insecurity, and an obligation. I think in that case being on instagram to make it as an artist isn't an obligation, but for some they used it and build on it which now became a material dependency.

@NIGHTEN agree! I'm really (really) aware how precarious material conditions forces those dependencies and i would never blame the people using mainstream social networks for work-career stuffs as nit has an important impact. I think it's also important to precise artist stuck on a platform are minority of people, statistically. Yet even with those two mechanism taken in account, it still feel very silly to notice that for most artists living in social network era, them being an artist add obstacle to social change instead of freeing you from a system. Which feels silly to me because it constrast with what some collective discourse often project on artists as possible embodiment of changes in practices. in this case their/our socio-economical positions are made possible through technological dependencies that actually add difficulties in going for change...

@neopostmodern thank you for bringing in that terminology differences, i tried to express that, i agree that's a big point to take in account. I wonder if - as some institutions progressively shift to fediverse - we are seeing more B2B artists over here, while the B2C (certain scene of musician, tatoo artist, hairdresser, etc) feel more stuck. Can i ask what you do as a B2B practice that feel stuck in instagram because the corresponding art world stays there?
