50 years on and space travel has become the techno utopia we have always wanted, as summed up in this quote from NASA's Artemis II livestream

that 00's joke has gone from cringe OS fanboy wars to Utopia levels of uncomfortable relevance:

Why do astronauts use Linux? Because you can't open windows in space.

"Aliens" media presents a future where the prime blue collar work requires 4-30 year swings away from home to work for one of the few megacorps. Characters talk about being "in it for the money" and how it sets themselves up much nicer than those who work back home. in this way, the legacy of Giger, O'Bannon, Shushett, and Scott is scifi that eschewed contemporary techno-orientalist paranoia in favour of a much darker idea: a future defined by West Australian values

Anthropic reveals Richard Dawkins wasn't using Claude, they just hooked up ELIZA and he immediately believed it was real when it responded with "and how does not being allowed to bring honey through Australian customs make you feel?"

BoM's continuing set of "upgrades" to their web platform broke my little rain radar display but have fixed it using the power of FTP!

tips on how you can do the same as well as a look at what lead to the shocking situation with The Bureau: https://az.id.au/dev/rain-radar-2/

Updates to my rain radar setup and how you can implement them, caused by my increasing ire at the BoM and the ghoulish nature of massive government consultancy projects.

@shmouflon@scorpinc.social going for a walk with the new rescued intern? have you told them if they want to do a "steal her look" vibe that they've gotta up their game. that glossy long Argan McQueen coat takes effort and maybe some borrowing from Snowy's closet while he's out.

@pH_0x05@infosec.exchange from what i've seen (in modern gamedev) a lot of the bloat is trade-off. a game has a limited budget up to release; they can cut back on features and spend it on optimisation but then gamers complain about that instead. and not all your team are fungible either (GPU dev vs networking vs artists) with the shortages i'd be happy if eXtreme graphic fidelity went on the backburner for a bit for focus on story, interplay between game systems

@exec @whitequark rent bidding has started becoming the norm here in Australia ;_; wanted to ask about UK/EU stuff tho, how many months notice for landlords ending a rolling contract? here fixed term is standard and we (tenants) preferred it because it at least gave you 12-24 months of stability at same rent rather than them giving 2-month notice to end so they could relist it at a price higher than they could increase your rent by

@whitequark @exec okay wow those changes are way better than our system. 💀 fixed-term agreements was max 24mths (standard was 12), fucked up that the UK allowed over 12-year leases before? i think some of those provisions would be lovely here! technically we have a bunch of them it's just not enforced or trying to enforce it screws you over. bigger problem is probably bonkers market rate driven by limited supply.

@whitequark @exec yeah. :( plus we have all that other stuff like landlords are allowed to enter the property 4 times a year to inspect and take photos/video that it's being kept clean to their own standard. and not allowed to put anything on the walls without landlord permission (yes, including those 3M commander strip hooks)

@disorderlyf @daedalus tbh i feel like degrees that focus on practical use should be TAFE certs/trade school qualification, with university being for academic/research within that area. so programmer, mechanical engineer, mining geologist, lawyer, GP, surgeon should all be various length TAFE + apprenticeships + licensing.

what's the opposite of transcribe? like you are reading aloud something that was written?

but in the immediate sense (not narrate) and not in the form of a speech/presentation (not orate)

just saw a review of a video game saying "this apparently had a $250,000 budget but it doesn't live up to that hype" uhhh. $250k in game dev is maybe a three person team for one year doing *everything* from programming, level design, art/modelling, testing, etc.
