I'm a plant physiologist doing #PlantScience, my discipline is forest tree #EcoPhysiology, which means studying how trees respond to their environment, for example how trees acclimate to #DroughtStress. More generally I’m interested in how to increase the resilience of #Forests to #ClimateChange, and I'm also in #HistoryOfScience #PhilosophyOfScience (as you can see here : https://philsci-archive.pitt.edu/18965/ ), #ScienceCommunication and #OpenScience

Aaaaahhhhhh ! One of my favourite papers, which is about the efficient use of water by plants, has just been cited in this sentence "[...] as stress-induced flower or seed abortion is typically irreversible (Brendel, 2021[...]". There is zero information in my paper about flower or seed abortion. Such wrong citations are actually nearly more the rule than the exception now, but I get §&$%"&% every time : did they not read my paper ? Why cite it then ? Do they pick random papers, just for more citations ? Have they even read the title ?

It still runs for 3 days Any hashtags, networks etc I have missed to bring more scientists in ? Perhaps some country specific hashtags and networks ? Please reply and add hashtags Thanks #AcademicChatter

@UlrikeHahn I have recently read blog about a solar driven server. And the blogger showed that using black and white raster images instead of Jpeg was much smaller. All images as well as video stills could be replaced by these raster images, avoiding strong data traffic during scrolling, and only shown on demand. I think I'm actually not interrested in 90% of the images in my timeline

#AcademicChatter Hello, fellow academic chatters. I'm an experimental scientist. And I regularly have the problem of how to organize acquired data by different participants to a same experiment. I'd like to have some feedback of how other people do this. Not necessarily specific computer programmes (such as digital labbooks), but rather how-tos based on robust, basic things, such as text and csv files, folder structures etc. I'm often battling with the workflow which is including handwritten measurements, their digital counterparts, metadata for the measurements, codes for samples, all of these done by different people, but all will have to end in one final dataset, where I would like to be able to trace data back to the paper files, and their metadata. And all of this with not too much additional effort by everybody ;-) Have done this usually with some shared server space, but usually it ends up as something a bit difficult to get through. I'm now rather thinking about a system involving perhaps something based on #MarkDown or even #RMarkdown or #knitr etc. Any feedback much welcome 😁

The #europeanCommision is debating the #CircularEconomy Act and has started online questionnaires where you can share your views. And there is especially one for younger citizens, from 15 to 29 years old :

https://environment.ec.europa.eu/news/young-voices-wanted-help-shape-circular-economy-act-2026-03-27_en

So please share widely across Europe, and especially with your kids and younger colleagues and friends

More information, as well as the link for the questionnaire for >29 citizens, is here :

@UlrikeHahn @Ooze @strypey Yes, if we go for public reviews, valued in the CVs, then such a review should probably include some part where the reviewer presents his understanding of the objectives of the paper and puts the objectives as well as the results into an additional bibliographic context (which could be added to the MS as some kind of editorial), allowing thus the evaluation of the competence of the reviewer, as well as the value of the review #OpenScience #PeerReview #AcademicChatter

@RMKrug @addison well, reviewer self-citation or not, I didn't review this paper 😉 And adding more refs should make sense, especially if the paper was solid . Xou can always miss important refs, for example because keywording has changed over time. But this should not be an excuse to decrease the quality of the ref-work.

@junesim63 The wood wide web, not as wide as it seems : this idea of interconnecting trees, based on Suzanne Simard's papers and then largely publicised by Peter Wohlleben in his book "The Hidden Life of Trees", is largely based on #CitationBias towards positive effects , as this very nice review paper here shows : https://www.nature.com/articles/s41559-023-01986-1 #ForestEcology #Forests
Positive citation bias and overinterpreted results lead to misinformation on common mycorrhizal networks in forests - Nature Ecology & Evolution

Positive citation bias and overinterpreted results lead to misinformation on common mycorrhizal networks in forests - Nature Ecology & Evolution

In this Perspective, Karst et al. discuss how both the popular media and scientific literature have inflated the extent of evidence for various roles of mycorrhizal fungal networks in forests.

@briney @QuantumDot2 Yes, naming convention is the foundation. I guess for what I was looking for returns of experience is how to tie the different files together, from raw data coming from different manual measurements or equipments, to consolidated data which would lead to some type of analysis to finalised data to be submitted to some repository. Everything could be traced by a readme.txt (or readme.md ;-) per folder, but when the data-collection is big enough, these readme's become rapidly un-readable. I was thinking about MD because some MD systems allow for automatic summaries, and MD allows linking among files, and it is pretty versatile and independent from specific software, as still human readable. I guess I'm looking for some experiences with these kind of set-ups 🙂 #AcademicChatter

@ombialik@mastodon.world many journals have proof editors. But if the proof editor is not a scientist, the result can be horrifying. And also when the proof editor is a scientist, but from a very different discipline, it still will have to be re-read by the author. Words and word usage is just not the same in different disciplines.

A word on bias : clearly this survey accounts only for scientists that were actively following from 2. to 9. February 2026 the science and academia related hashtags from the first post, which are in English, or were reached by the over 260 boosts, which were not only in English. The aim was not to get some robust numbers of #EUScientists on Mastodon, but to get a rough idea of coverage. Many of the people who boosted had over a hundred followers, some over a thousand. Difficult to say how much overlap there was (the possibility of a detailed analysis of all followers of all boosters would clearly be interesting), but with a mean of 200 non-overlapping followers, this survey might have reached 50.000 people or more (some boosts were organizational account with several thousand followers). Thanks for several links of other studies with a similar aim, I will have a look and report back here :-) 4/..

@cartes_app impressionnant !
