Debian Developer, GIS geek, FLOSS activist. Researcher and data scientist.

I'm universally known as Frankie, a long-time Debian Developer and FLOSS activist. I found my way into the free/open-source world in the mid-90s, thanks to my job as a researcher and the experiences after my degree in Computer Science. Currently, I'm mainly interested in geospatial technologies and methodologies in Earth Observation.

Just discovered the website of my old mate Paolo Cavallini, who has been sailing somewhere in the Pacific for a couple of years.

It takes no time at all to go from GIS to the sea.

https://www.libresailing.eu/en/

I'm largely envious...

RE: @homegrown@social.growyourown.services

This directly results from the walled-garden approach in digital services. Escaping from that is not a right; it is a duty.

"This is what it looks like when an OEM stops treating Linux support as an afterthought and starts treating it as engineering. Not a checkbox on a spec sheet. Not a “works with Linux” footnote. Actual kernel work, actual upstream contributions, actual collaboration with the people building the tools developers use every day and helping the Linux community as a whole."

Kudos to #Dell folks and well done

@Enalys The usual approach is using a containerized approach, BUT that changes exactly nothing, because even containers need upgrades, and at a certain point in time, you are fucked in any case. After 30 years, I have become quite choosy about computing choices based on the expected life cycle... Today, I tend to deprecate the use of frameworks and warn 'ex ante' about languages that are expected to fail by design.

@Vive_Levant@masto.bike @Emmaf_77@piaille.fr @Ashedryden@xoxo.zone Yes, in my experience, it is not a genre issue but an attitude toward giving explanations to patients, right or wrong, in any case, with or without a founded diagnosis. It seems an admission of limited/inadequate skills/information is a social stigma for medical professionals. A simple 'I have no idea, sorry' is not admitted.

@mjg59 Another well-known past 'democratization' of programming has been the spreadsheet with its macro system. In the 80s, it changed how many professionals manage data. Spreadsheets had similar results: a lot of slop, with confusion between data and computation, but even some good results when used with a grain of salt. Was that good or bad? It depends on who judges that, and it varies from case to case.

@rpbook@gts.phillipsuk.org @sjn@chaos.social This is, unfortunately, also the main reason the so-called ripping off of artists' creations is pointless. If you buy a book with pictures of original creations, one can use them for training, exactly as a reader can study such portraits for their own goals, make hand copies for their own use, and so on. Like it or not, licenses and copyrights are something more specific than what it seems the idea of many people.

So pay attention to what you desire for FOSS, because it could happen in many ways, including some very destructive ones.

To complete the concept, while servers generally retain IPs often for security and/or debugging purposes, profiling is totally another beast, and very few services are able to use such information within recommending systems or other machine learning engines. One of the few is surely Google, but most of the hyperscalers can, and probably already do.

The point about spec is the level of detailing taken from the original work. If you write an original novel about a wild, big monkey found in a jungle, brought to New York, who escapes and so on, the King Kong author cannot claim any rights to that, sorry. If it were different, many narratives and movies would not exist today. That is inspiration, not derivation. Of course it is fair declaring inspiration, but call it with the right name.

The latest Debian #kernel update fixed 1312 #security-related issues, including information leaks. It seems to me that this number is due only to applying (at cost) AI tool detection, and if the same were applied to any other OS, the result would be the same.

How many tons of still-unknown issues are spread across BSD, macOS, and Windows kernels?

@hongminhee @mitsuhiko @antirez I would also note that, currently, the extension of copyright protection to AI-generated works remains an open question, and the US side of the common law does not consider them even copyrightable without a significative human contribution (no, prompts do not count). So, every shot to the copyleft has its consequences I would say. The whole matter is quite complicated and questionable.

Replying to
@rpbook@gts.phillipsuk.org @sjn@chaos.social The truth is that copyright and licenses cannot be used to avoid abuses per se. They need to be defended in court, and I'm quite sure copyright laws will change, but you know that such laws vary from country to country, so the problem was there before and will be there in the future as well. In the past, changes in law always followed changes in technology. I see no signs of something better for the future.

@hongminhee @mitsuhiko @antirez It is technically legal, but note that it took ages to create a legal framework fully accepted for a lot of products of creativity that were fully accepted by all parties. And still there were corners in the rights not fully understood. Even, note that the white room reimplementation has been only a technical trick to enforce the safety of a reimplementation, not a strict legal requirement. For the future, who knows?
