did you know

  • the nintendo switch 1 has an accessory called the "flip grip" that allows you to use it when rotated vertically
  • the nintendo switch 1 has an active modding community which has ported ubuntu and fedora to it
  • if your switch was made before 2019 it has a hardware vulnerability that makes it extremely easy to install these mods.
  • these mods only exist in memory and on the sd card, so at any point you can just reboot your switch and it will go back to its unmodded state.
  • MelonDS is cool :)

zuzai is a good word for the same reason "vegan" and "roguelike" are good words. zuzai specifically doesn't try to define exactly what genai is, mechanically. it says, in my opinion, "there is an intuitive sense that genai violates some set of values that we share. zuzai is that set of values." I've argued in the past that most things under the term "roguelike" are not, in fact, like the game Rogue (1980). however, roguelike things are like each other. they capture some intuitive set of values we have about what makes a game "loseable" without being the same thing as, say, Super Mario Bros (NES). you can try to loophole that and say "well, technically it has permadeath and random elements and powerups" but I don't think anyone would take you seriously because it doesn't fit into that cultural niche. all this to say that I think zuzai's abstractness is its strength and I'm gonna start proudly declaring and requesting zuzai in my media. #zuzai #aipol #language

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @miss_rodent@girlcock.club @davidgerard@circumstances.run this was the biggest shock to me when i worked my first faang job. I was expecting the sanitized culture. I was tolerant of the long hours. But my word, i have never seen so much passionless code. No cheeky comments or variable names, no break room discussion of our favorite esolangs, and most of all no peer review. They say there's peer review but I think i was the only person on the team who was asking questions like "is this parameter necessary?" or "could we give this numeric literal a better name?" and also positive feedback like "great use of standard libraries" and "thank you for adding a readme".

was introduced to a board game today called Bullet by Lv99 Games! it's a puzzle fighter about girls who dodge bullets. the cards at the bottom show three ways i can "clear" bullets this turn (remove them from the board without getting hit by them). Each turn you add more and more bullets; whoever dodges the most wins.

Each character has a special ability. Planil here is a stage magician (
🧡) and every time she gets a star, she can do a magic trick: make an upcoming bullet disappear temporarily, useful for lining up patterns. There's another character who's a master chef; she cooks with mystery ingredients: her patterns are always the same but her abilities to manipulate bullets are randomized instead.

There's a "boss" variant of each character so you can team up for co-op games, I think? I wanna try that sometime!

@midnakrystal@sadbitches.online I think there's a feedback loop; animals come to represent various architypes, just like they do in fairy tales. Foxes are "tricksters", cats are "wise", dogs are "loyal" etc. I chose a bull for Klay because i associate bull and cow furries with a sort of minotaur dungeon boss monster vibe.

@midnakrystal@sadbitches.online I think people are influenced by the archetypes without knowing it. You watch Robin Hood and get the "foxes are tricky" thing intuitively and then later maybe thats why you remember foxes being "cool." or you played Twilight Princess and remember wolfs being loyal. Or you had a crush on Midna. either way, wolfs are "hot". etc.

@mxchara@seattle.pink like if someone says "they're putting chemicals in the water that turn the frogs gay" and I say "no they're not" then that's not sarcasm, that's me stating what I believe is true. if I say "of course, that's why there were no gay frogs until just recently" then I'm saying something I don't believe, and I'm hoping the listener will pick up on the fact that this isn't something I would normally believe -- I want them to realize that I'm saying a falsehood on purpose without intent to deceive.

@mxchara@seattle.pink saying that sarcasm doesn't involve the speaker's intent feels "wrong" to me, that's like saying that something is "a joke" even if you say it by accident. I would say that a joke is something told with the intent of being funny, and if you do it by accident it's just a gaffe. But, again, I see now how this might be a weak distinction.

@asie@mk.asie.pl I feel like this exact dilemma is the reason for the VSCode "copilot takes credit for your work" thing. they're creating intentional ambiguity to make it harder to filter out tainted code. I would be impressed at the skullduggery if they were, y'know, not using it to ruin everything. edit: maybe instead of "has AI / doesn't have AI" we can move to something like a water cleanliness scale. "contaminated by user", "contaminated by easily-replaced dependency", "contaminated by core library"

@mxchara@seattle.pink I'm using "believed" here to mean "understand something to be true in the real world." If you're saying something which is absurd, because it logically follows an absurd conclusion, then you don't actually want the listener to say "yes, that's true" uncritically, right?

@Genstar@meow.social Zendo revels in its abstractness and it's a real banger. At most, you can say that the stacks of colored blocks are "sort of like rocks in a zen garden", which is already pretty abstract. The gameplay is "logical induction": every block arrangement is flagged "true" or "false" by the GM, and the players win if they guess the rule, for example "there must be a piece stacked on another piece" or "there must not be any red pieces".

@mxchara@seattle.pink I'm using "lying" here to mean "saying something you know is false, on purpose". Normally when people say lying they mean "saying something false, on purpose, with the intent of being believed", so I'm clarifying here that sarcasm is like lying but without the intent of being believed. A lot of autistic people I've met are afraid of "saying falsehoods" in any context, because "that's lying", which is why I bothered to mention autistic people in this post clarifying the difference. I would argue that a reducto ad absurdum, as you've described it, is definitely sarcasm, and it's sarcasm for the same reason as I'm describing: taking an absurd conclusion as true would require a large update to my priors.

hella rad new commission done for me by @sofia_drawsmore@critter.cafe who is rad and you should all follow her

Fortune's Court vs Klay's Demons! Do you think they know about timed attacks?

---

the new characters in this are named Stryke and Xerona and I'm really proud of the concept, they're based on my actual inner demons. I'll say more in replies if you wanna know more but the short version is "hell yeah now my anxiety has a face I can punch". Sofia did an amazing job capturing the vibe of everything involved here.

(skimpy outfits, but no nudity or fetishes, let me know if you think this needs a cw blur)

edit: minor update, sofia wanted to go back and add some shadows. im really glad we can edit fedi posts :3

@PhoenixWright@ieji.de @swiftyshq@critter.cafe @foone@digipres.club hey what the fuck phoenix. do you go around fearmongering on everyone's mutual aid request, or only the women? it looks like you made an account 3 days ago and in that time you've done 1) this, 2) a pretty generic complaint about replaceable batteries, and 3) literal both-sides-ism regarding american politics (which you also claim not to participate in). so, like. why would any of us listen to you over one of our own? edit: I found more of your posts and it looks like you also like to "just ask questions" on topics that would be very easy for you to look up yourself. I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not doing this on purpose, so here is some free advice: what you're doing is called "sealioning" and it's a form of trolling. if you love debate so much then do your own homework and come back when you have evidence of your own, don't just accuse everyone else of being "biased".

this QR code is printed at 4x scale on a 300 dpi printer so it has an effective resolution of 75 pixels per inch. this particular code is 1.687 inches wide and encodes 1,262 ascii characters, suggesting a data density of 0.443 kBpsi. I've done some testing and if I use my phone's zoom feature I can reliably scan this same code at only .75 inches wide, suggesting a possible data density of 2.24 kBpsi. larger QR codes are more dense, and in the extreme case of a 2kB code measuring 177 pixels wide, we would expect to see 2.61 kBpsi. for context, a GBA e-reader card can store "5824 bytes on two strips" and still have plenty of space in the middle of the card for artwork. if we did that with high-density QR codes it would require... 2.23 square inches, about 25% of a playing card, and a whopping 32% of a business card. the GBA e-reader is stupidly effective, probably because it's designed for a camera with a fixed focal length and isn't worried about data redundancy like the QR encoding is. I wonder how much farther I could push this if I implemented my own dotcode. also, kBpsi is fun to say!! https://sethmlarson.dev/dumping-nintendo-ereader-card-roms

@mxchara@seattle.pink ahhh. okay, if you're saying "this absurd thing follows" because you think they might actually believe that thing, then I suppose that might be a weak point of this definition. I wouldn't call that sarcasm, I'd say that's more like a question without a question mark. "You believe that, so do you believe this?" I wouldn't call that sarcasm, since I've always been told sarcasm is supposed to be funny or satirical, and this just sounds like a good faith argument. But I can understand now why someone might disagree with me.

@notavi10@critter.cafe apparently it's from a presentation (made with genai assets, bleh) coming from an investment firm, which is desperately trying to convince clients that "eggs do not lay eggs. geese lay eggs. if you want to keep producing eggs you need to own a goose." and I assume their point is something like "if a business sells off all its assets to increase earnings this quarter, that is not growth. they are trying to inflate their stock price. we should not reward this behavior. stop falling for this." edit: given that they apparently use imageslop, their point could also be "it's good for a company to lose a lot of money if they are building an artificial intelligence goose" but I dunno.
