"Is this repo manually coded? If it's manually coded you're being left behind." Ma'am, that is a twenty five thousand LoC slab of C++ code. It targets a console designed twenty two years ago and discontinued twelve years ago. It is an amalgamation of the work of several developers, forked, patched, reformatted, strained, and ultimately inexorably joined in an unholy Make ruleset. Market economics had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this project exists proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom. This prism of code is more than a story point. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for entropy. It is hubris manifest. We also have an SDL3 port if you would prefer that.

💭 since CPython will now ship with LLM generated patches, will new Ren'Py visual novels on itch.io have to tag themselves as containing "AI generated code"?

there's a weird social media campaign that might finally convince me to read "witch hat atelier". i thought it's an average fantasy manga but if it's being vilified on the ex-birdsite then i think i have to get interested in it.

is it good?

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt @joe@f.duriansoftware.com If you're trying to get away from LLMs... While OpenBSD itself does not accept AI code, some projects which are developed as part of it (in particular tmux) appear to care less: https://github.com/tmux/tmux/commit/1c7e164c22a3cb21d1e281087cd4aaa489d72b84 - see their stance here: https://github.com/tmux/tmux/wiki/Contributing NetBSD has held an anti-AI stance for the longest of all projects I'm aware of, but I think they will similarly run into the issue of key upstream projects adopting it. I mean, anything shipping, say, amdgpu will run into that problem. If you really want to go down this path, MirBSD is the only one I've seen openly calling LLMs "fashtech", as opposed to arguments rooted in copyright. But that's extremely niche, probably more so than even Haiku.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space @Antrotroll@livellosegreto.it I'm not so sure. I'm 29 and many of the people I know in retro computing are younger than myself. Maybe not "such numbers", yes, but there are plenty of people who care; I think 8- and 16-bit computers will always have a kind of soft spot because they were the first personal computers. Just like how people revere the early installments of long-running, popular series. On the flip side, I also run into many people who are already building retro Pentium 4's. In Poland, the Core 2 Duo E8400 specifically already has the status of a "retrocomputing"-adjacent meme among younger folk. Either way, I'm more worried about the other kind of entropy: hardware and storage medium failures.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt @joe@f.duriansoftware.com Security is one factor. OpenBSD prides itself on it, but I wouldn't say it's particularly ahead of Linux overall in a practical, well-configured scenario. NetBSD is considerably less audited, and a C3 talk about BSD security was... scathing on it. Software availability is another. Spent a non-trivial amount of time getting Minecraft to run on NetBSD. In general, more things will break, and there will be fewer documented fixes - unless you only use FOSS, and even then. I recall OpenBSD having some performance issues at the time when running IntelliJ, which I think were fixable with enough tuning but I never got that far. But I welcome trying it - it was certainly a valuable and fun experience until I realized more things work out of the box on Linux.

Could someone please test this newly re-enabled native AArch64 build of the emulator Mesen2 and leave a comment? I suspect that a fix I did to make the Linux builds work on newer Linux distributions may also have fixed that.

@xgqt@functional.cafe I think the author's trying to point out that it is hard for most users of GNU/Linux to "exercise the four freedoms", or in fact benefit from other people exercising those freedoms in a practical sense today; in this way, the offering of the corporate machine becomes more compelling. Having the freedom to do something does not absolve its user of criticism.

If you're looking for forks:

  • For 1.7.10 players, GregTech: New Horizons's 1.7.10 fork continues to be actively maintained and has many more features/improvements over the official codebase, albeit it may not be a 100% drop-in replacement for existing playthroughs.
  • For 1.12.2 players, there's nothing.
  • For modern players, the best option is a 1.21.1 fork by Michiyo, an OC community moderator and oldbie, called "OpenComputers; Rebooted". It is trying to clean up, fix up, and salvage akki's vibe coded 1.20.1 update attempt.

@quinn@social.circl.lu the companies are pushing for legislation which makes them do the least work and minimizes harm to their revenue streams. banning social media companies from harming children could easily be extended to banning social media companies from harming adults, and would require them to put in actual effort. banning children from accessing social media is a flag check - and you can push the implementation work on OS vendors or public institutions

"Yes — This project contains the output of Generative AI" "No — This project does not contain the output of Generative AI" if you select "Yes", you can check specific types, including "Code". Steam has updated its rules a few months ago to exclude non-player-facing material, which probably excludes code
