I’m a technologist from Pittsburgh with nearly two decades of experience building software for the web and iOS, and managing engineering teams. I’m most at home among a team of people working together to build something they love.

Talk to me about vinyl records, music technology, comedy, Minecraft, Pittsburgh, Detroit style pizza, Democratic politics, or software development if all else fails.

@inthehands I’d make the case that it wasn’t even the tool. He really lost when the hard work of activism and organizing took root. The election was just making it official. The same goes for Trump. Our job is to make him (or his would-be successor) a loser well before the 2028 election. If we keep the pressure on and keep convincing more and more people to see clearly how unfit he is in every way, we will get there. But bringing more people along for the ride is crucial.

@joenepraat@todon.nl “Palantir supports Israel” seems like something I might say to warn someone to reconsider a favorable opinion of either one. All other faults aside, if the Times makes a buck letting Palantir spread its stink around, I’ve got no problem with it.

RE: @thephpf@phpc.social

I haven’t talked to @elizabeth@fosstodon.org in such a long time, but she is one of the very best people I’ve met in this industry, and this announcement has made me feel all sorts of nostalgic for this community that I owe my career to. What a wonderful development for all of my PHP friends!

This is a devastating examination of the current rejection of morality in the tech industry.

Anil has tied together many of the same threads that @sean@scoat.es has been taking about for years. @anildash@me.dm

Recently I’ve been watching a lot of Dimension 20 and Critical Role. I’ve been curious about TTRPGs for a long time, but the Unsleeping City series really captured my attention.

Anyway, I’m interested in playing a D&D campaign or similar. I’m open to joining a group or starting a new party, remotely or here in Pittsburgh. Does anyone have any advice for getting into this hobby?

@MuseumShuffle @mattkiazyk was an amazing advocate for considering dynamic text size when I worked with him at Matter. I wish everyone had that sense of urgency about this low hanging accessibility fruit. I’ve been working on a cross platform app lately and it is a major bummer how bad the font size scaling situation is on macOS.

Unfortunately social media is a nigh unstoppable generator of derision and denigration. Hope your kid can understand the comparative value of creation vs destruction. Wish them the best.

@nick@sloan.host @codinghorror@infosec.exchange @carnage4life@mas.to Takeaway is that it is incredibly difficult to break the sycophancy directive, and that it will lie to you to maintain the illusion. This started off as a silly way to pass some time, and ended up informing my understanding of LLMs more than anything else. Lately I’ve seen a lot of people talking about using it to do work that they don’t know how to do themselves, and I think this is a disaster waiting to happen.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange @carnage4life@mas.to I asked Claude to help me learn the mechanics of D&D by playing a short campaign that it made up. In the first attempt, it made up dice rolls to favor me, and repeatedly broke its own rules to suit my choices. I asked it to mitigate by generating real random numbers, and by logging decisions as they were made so I could audit later. It claimed to be updating the log throughout, but it never wrote to it at all.

@pixelambacht @Meyerweb I’d love to get the CSS for it, as long as it is not in the one family per face format that is shockingly common output from type designers. Always prefer one time over monthly, though it has never been clear to me what happens when I cross the views threshold (do I buy the next tier at full price?) and monthly would make that clear.

Thanks to everyone boosting this. No replies yet. Here is my own contribution:

  • GitHub
  • Stripe

I think both are highly usable on mobile, but maybe not quite reaching the target of greatness.

A friend also mentioned LinkedIn, and said that scroll performance on the mobile website is better than the mobile app. I’m not going to try the mobile app, but LinkedIn does seem to be pretty usable on mobile.

I’m beginning to think that those examples might be more or less as good as it gets.

Michael Ian Black has been one of my favorite comedians for my entire adult life, but in the past decade he has become someone I look to for some of the most beautiful, insightful, and resonant writing about American life.

@aburka @tante To be fair, that bit of the book seems to be describing an Abundance-pilled utopian future, not the present state of things. It is grounded in as much reality as any utopic vision has ever been, which is to say none at all.

Is anyone else finding the Styles tab in Safari’s developer tools unreliable with nested CSS and layers? When inspecting the body element, it is showing me styles for the selector `p`, and not showing my styles with the `body` selector. Both `body` and `p` selectors are nested inside of the same layer declaration.

The organization of the UI in the Styles tab doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that I’m not doing something wrong here, but Chrome shows me exactly what I expect.

@andrewnez Any chance you could add the “zero telemetry” promise to the README and/or that blog post? I came to this project via someone else’s recommendation, and had to find my way to this post to find an explicit claim of no telemetry. Obviously a README is not a guarantee, but it’s nice to see it clearly stated as an intention of the project.

@spiderbill@mastodon.scot @superblox@mastodon.social @benjaoming@social.data.coop Building only for Chrome sucks, but also Mozilla chasing what little users they have away with behavior not that dissimilar to what Chrome did here genuinely makes it a difficult proposition to spend effort supporting Firefox. Vivaldi is just one of several browsers that use Chrome’s internals to render pages but won’t ship this model. Might be worth checking out one of those if you need Chrome compatibility.

@spiderbill@mastodon.scot @superblox@mastodon.social @benjaoming@social.data.coop I’d be really curious to know if it works in Vivaldi if you disable ad blockers (if applicable) or if you spoof the Chrome user agent. If disabling the ad-blocker fixes it, they might have allowed some tracker’s JS to break their JS. If the user agent spoof fixes it then they are unnecessarily breaking the site for non-Chrome by doing browser identification rather than feature detection.

@hynek@mastodon.social I’ve been thinking this exact thing. If the hype machine is right, it won’t need carefully considered inputs to get things right. If you believe it, the best thing you could be doing is learning a trade or establishing a farm. I believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. In the long term the technology will be a valuable tool that can augment productivity when driven by an experienced user. My biggest fear is that we’ve broken the roadmap for gaining experience.
