@sense @iamkonstantin "I used to run Debian for many years but found its stable nature somewhat limiting when it comes to getting new app versions easily." With Flatpak gaining traction that's not as big of an issue as it used to be. I can still get up-to-date versions of apps, often officially published by the author on Flathub, even if Debian's own repos are somewhat out of date.

@sense @iamkonstantin The distro-independent formats I know about are Flatpak, Snap and AppImage. I have no popularity stats, just personal preferences. AppImage has no update mechanism, which is a dealbreaker for me. Snap feels kinda bloated and clunky to me. It's also very much a Canonical technology, for better or worse. I feel like Flathub has a lot of officially supported GNOME apps. Some dependencies are deduplicated (e.g. Gtk/Qt) to optimize space/network usage.

@petealexharris @MostlyHarmless Granted, in dense city centers the situation is completely different. When you do have high demand for transport from A to B, high-frequency mass transit is by far the best way to go.

Several big tech companies are mad that the EU didn't extend Chat Control surveillance https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/around-the-globe/google-europe/reaffirming-commitment-to-child-safety/

Reaffirming our commitment to child safety in the face of European Union inaction

Today, because of the expiry of the ePrivacy derogation enabling the use of technology to detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM), Europe risks leaving children across…

@MostlyHarmless Any type of farming/industrial automation also had the goal of eliminating labor (i.e. paying workers less). That really sucked for the people who lost their job. Suppose you're the leader of a big country. Self-driving cars have been invented, in this scenario they're completely safe. Many people start taking self-driving taxis because they're cheaper. Cab drivers are losing work. Would you ban self-driving taxis to make sure cab drivers could continue earning a wage?

@petealexharris @MostlyHarmless As an aside, is mass transit outside dense city centers still the best way to serve public needs when you could have heavily regulated robotaxis? I often see buses drive around with just a few seats filled, despite increases in bus lanes, which undermines the theoretical economy of scale. Public transport in rural areas has been reduced over time, leading to transit poverty for people who don't own a car. I'm wondering if robotaxis would be an efficient solution.

@thierrya @MostlyHarmless It is possible to design a self-driving car that doesn't support remote control.

@thierrya @MostlyHarmless Do you have a major news source for that? I know someone could technically hide 4G/5G modems in cars to implement such a destructive mechanism, but I haven't heard about any such incidents yet.

@sense @iamkonstantin One major caveat to take in mind that I forgot to mention: flathub.org - the primary source for Flatpak apps - is very much oriented towards GUI apps. Since you mention a server use case, you're probably thinking about CLI apps, which aren't really the focus of Flathub.

The best alternative I have to install up-to-date CLI apps are Python's Pypi and Rust's cargo install, which compiles and installs apps hosted on crates.io. Those are mostly language-specific.

@benjaoming Chrome has been silently installing features I don't want for a long time, so this isn't news. If you value control, Waterfox/LibreWolf/Vivaldi is there for you.

@janvlug@mastodon.social If we want opensource mobile OSes to succeed, they need officially supported banking apps and identity verification apps. These are crucial to me but they only exist on iOS and Android.
