I am an ITSA student and love to tinker on my home servers (both running Ubuntu LTS).
Speaking of liberation with tech, technology is what we produce to liberate us from our shortcomings. Braille letters for poor or lack of sight. Sign language for the lack of hearing. Elevators and escalators to make short movement convenient. Vehicles for making far away close. OCR for figuring out where a package or mail needs to go. Oximeter to detect sleepapnea issues. I could go on. Phones to instantly hear other side of the planet.
Just like people make great tech, people can make tech ugly too. One problem we face thanks to social media and reach through phones is that, we get to be overwhelmed by hearing about the issues we have no power to fix. I don't mean that awareness is pointless, but it would be easier if we could focus on local issues and take action on them first.

I am saying this without having any clue about the culture or the C-Suite of your organizarion.
Are you and your colleagues able to compose a collective memo to point out energy demand issues of many AI powered tools?
If those in control really care about Earth, they will thank your team and change their methods. And if they are more capitalist, they will see how ill of an idea it was. Again, I have not checked your Fedi or LinkedIn profile.

For a moment I thought SAD was the time zone BS would be in when not in PDT. I hope Alberta stops switching time too after this switch. It would be funny to be on the same timezone as Saskatchewan.

We often complain about politicians making poor decisions even after taking a long time. Anchoring yourself to subject matter experts you can trust is the best way to make good decisions on matters you don't excel. Congrats to @BZKopensource@social.overheid.nl on their decision.

Ooff. That sounds like most employers right now.
Problem should be identified correctly to develop the right solution. Problem with hype around technology is that, people develop problems for whatever is being hyped to solve.
The only difference from cryptocurrency/blockchain frenzy is that, governments are trying to stay at helm from the beginning.

Wow, you weren't kidding when you said it is abandoned. This is the kind of posts you will find on mastodon.cloud.
There are accounts either selling social media accounts, or are scams.

Not automatically, but we admins have option to block servers according to their self reported software name and version number. Unfortunately both of these can be misreported.

int random_number() {
return 4;

For it to feel random, answer should be unexpected. 5, 7, 10 or 55555 wouldn't feel random, but 4 does.

Forget about people shouting that 8GB is not enough. Base model of my laptop, Lemur Pro (lemp11) by System76, comes with 8GB RAM. My father lived happily for years on a Toshiba Tecra with Solus OS with 8GB. So many people will use laptops with 8GB RAM for years to come, and not complain, because 16GB is enough (more on that later). Issue with Apple is not that it is selling laptops with 8GB RAM, issue is forcing people to be stuck at 8GB physical RAM.
Dell, HP, Lenovo, and more OEMs sell laptops with 8GB RAM, nobody cares. When not enough, upgrade. Option is there.
What we are against is false marketing. 8 GB RAM on Mac isn't equivalent to 16 GB RAM in other systems. They are going to talk about memory compression technology as if that is unique to Apple. Linux had memory compression for years. Read more about ZRAM. People have been using Zram on Android devices for years too, but it was exposed to users under many different names. Ever heard of RAM Plus on Samsung? Every device with 8GB RAM can feel like having 16 GB RAM thanks to memory compression that is available to every device.
Neo is not a bad device, nor are the technologies and engineering which went into it making it. What annoys me the most is the limitations Apple subjects its devices to, and therefore their customers, and those customers cheering for it.

What you are asking can only be achieved by something integrated into the OS. Thankfully we have Seedvault.
Seedvault is a backup system that doesn't have a standalone app, but integrated into many ROMs, and accessed via Android system settings. It does daily encrypted "low level" backups, primarily to a USB storage, or some other medium of your choosing. Seedvault comes with many ROMs, including Graphene, e/OS/, and Calyx.
It also works with Nextcloud 😀
https://medium.com/@glenn.sorrentino/host-your-own-mobile-backups-with-seedvault-and-nextcloud-dd3bb1632487
Heads up: Seedvault uses Android's system wide backup API. This API allows apps to opt-out of system wide backups if they choose, which is often used by messaging and banking apps for user data to not end up in Google servers.
In my case, I set Signal messenger to backup into a specific folder where it keeps backups of last 2 days. Then I use Nextcloud app to sync that folder.

UnifiedPush is cool. For timely notifications, we neither depend on tech giants nor worry about apps draining battery by constantly running.
That being said, tech debt is a big barrier to configuring things to work just as neatly.

I just realized I accidentally quoted an unrelated note, while replying to myself. Quoting can cause weird cases such a post being reply to 2 different threads.
I deleted the other post, and have no clue how that will affect this post. It should now be quoting a post that doesn't exist.

I am aware that this doesn't really solve your problem now, but at best can guide you which phone to choose next time.
I would say, use Nextcloud with DAVx5 for full contact and calendar syncing. Some launchers allow exporting their settings. I know Lawnchair, Nova, and Niagara launchers have backup/export options.

Interesting. I understand that presenting too many options to people right away is a bad user experience. How about presenting presets, normal (default), high contrast, and custom. High contrast preset would enable few options, underline all links being one of them.
Adding "Custom" only to suggest people that those options aren't all or none kind of deal, and even more options are available in settings.
Would presets be a good way to reduce decision fatigue?

That is a brilliantly simple, and sensible way to approach this. Let parents/guardians to set things up for their kids.
But the issue politicians will find with this approach right away is that it gives control away. We can't have that. It is governments' job to parent kids, not parents' job.

I don't know why, but I first focused on the second frame and misread the reserved as reversed. Then I proceeded to read the first frame with the idea that this is an IT joke (we visualize trees in IT as growing downward).
My brain works in mysterious ways.

I felt like being called out for hosting this instance.
Fosstodon, a FOSS focused instance was my first home on the Fediverse. This however felt limiting when I wanted to talk about things outside FOSS or IT in general. Idea of hosting an instance came to my mind, but ActivityPub extension for WordPress was not a thing yet. So, running a complete Mastodon or similar service was the only option.
During the setup, I thought to myself "why go all this trouble for just one person (myself), but not make it open to others who may want to join, but not sure which instance to choose? They might be fellow Edmontonians who I could meet IRL.
There were Canada-wide instances, mstdn.ca comes to mind, but I settled on self-hosting, and maybe even take responsibility of taking care of others' data too. I had my mind set on it.
Insanity is what it is, and that it was this toot feels directed at me.

I am learning email sieve programming to protect my sanity. Turns out, there is an entire programming language dedicated to filtering incoming emails.

.eml files however they would like. Sieve language never differentiated "folders", "tags", "categories" etc. All those things are actually just labels that insists to act differently. They all use fileinto expression. For instance, you want to tag a utility bill email as ToDo, and also move it into "Bills" folder,require "fileinto";
if address :matches "From" "@utilitycompany.com" {
fileinto "ToDo";
fileinto "Bills";

Extremism leads to voluntary disability. It doesn't matter how able bodied a person is, if they have an extremist view, it becomes near impossible for them to see or hear.
