At some point, after seeing 100 instances of super-simple bugs like this, you just oscillate towards the word “pathetic”.

@charliemchapman Are you planning on having way more screen-items or even allow creation by user? Because a sidebar looks like huge overkill for 2 items. For only 2-3 you could integrate some sort of selector into the title bar — no overuse of screen space, always visible and accessible with single click, always visible labels.

I do not remember the intention for the language code itself.

@zhcet@mastodon.design Where did the “old” designers go? Was there an extinction event that I missed? :D Is the dilution so strong? It should not take that many people to lead, oversee, and teach. And there is little pro software compared to mobile. You would think it should be enough of experienced designers to cover the field.

@zhcet@mastodon.design It is a bit strange state to be at for more than a decade old product. Maybe the merge into a family will actually help? I have’t used v2, so have no idea of evolution direction. But e.g. Cavalry, another Canva acquisition, left an impression of having way stronger design than Affinity. Still dense, still has its own style, but way more coherency, clarity. But I would agree, that old Adobe is the best. Is it that hard to copy the principles?

@zhcet@mastodon.design Hm… I didn’t find the internal coherency in Affinity 3 to begin with — inspectors to me look super dense in wrong ways, cramped comparing to the tool/option bars, scaling variation feels wild even looking exclusively inside inspector area elements. Does not look like designed/overseen-by by one pair of hands/eyes.

@jirirbr@mastodon.design No no, I totally got what you did mean, I did read the previous toot in the thread. But that’s the point — hardware and software from the same company, but on such opposing positions on the quality spectrum at the moment. Hardware quality helps keeping a hope that software will recover.

@fromtibo@mastodon.social @performat@mastodon.social Yep, I would second that. For the simple, glyph-based, flat ones — it is hard to argue against the new system look (although I’m not a fan) comparing to the old system look. Being iOS-7-flat may give some of those “not fitting in” and “not yet updated” vibes. If you dislike loosing sharpness, try effects that retain or even increase the sharpness. You can go subtle, or you can go wild and get some uniqueness emerge from that.

@charliemchapman @tuomas_h Great! So splash the color into the titlebar/toolbar area and try to restyle the selector to make sense. The angle to this layout that seems to give additional appeal (at least for me personally) is that the app is about temporary lists and that fits the metaphor of notepad with tear out pages very well. Meaning that by distinctly coloring the top you are getting into visual language speaking this:

@dvrzan As a public data point you can just look at YouTube watched counts on video lists of dev content creators.

The only videos I personally watch are WWDC, as they are “documentation”. Otherwise, doc/article format.

I’m sure a lot of preference one way or another is coming from generational aspects and experience levels.

I can’t even say I consume tech content. Rather I collect blogs of “deep divers” by topics, so that when need arises I know where to scan for possible answers.

@arroz “Service” attitude sounds about right. It is a logically separable module, and it must be async because it may take significant time to execute the work (in relation to display refresh time). If mutable data objects are trivial and can live on the main thread — why complicate things. Making and guarding an island has a cost attached to it (code complexity and performance), so it needs to be worth it. It’s like architecturally you should be fine to move an actor to another hardware node.

@jirirbr@mastodon.design As much as they used to? Certainly unlikely for the average to be at the level of the old times, due the sheer difference in company size. But you can at least still see recent examples of excellence in hardware and in marketing. That can somewhat sustain the hope that the overall care is still present. And yes, it is hard when faced with season-26 horrors. At the very least Apple has proved that they cannot execute a redesign smoothly. Maybe that’s it, and it will heal in 1-2 years.

@marioguzman@mastodon.social Not about content, but about formatting of the webpage itself: You should experiment with the max reading width. For sections that go edge-to-edge, the jump to the next line is not comfortable. Also when you go into single column narrow layout, the order of image vs section title is not working for me. When randomly scanning my mind interprets headers as the beginnings of the sections. Not sure how much of the whitespace there should be to visually convince me otherwise.

This probably has chances of having strange consequences for accessibility and alternative readers. And now that I thought about accessibility, the image vs title order issue mentioned above should probably be considered not only visual parsing problem, but also structural info hierarchy issue.
