Award-winning author of AN INHERITANCE OF ASHES and ABOVE, editor, book reviewer, & food security/mutual aid organizer. Socially responsible dirtbag with her headphones on.

Also: #TOpoli, indie music, urban ag, circular economies, climate, #BlueJays, occasional celiac cooking, increasing levels of permaculture. For years I've ended these with "against entropy," a la John M. Ford, but recently realized: it's actually futility I have a problem with. Against futility.

@alienghic @pikhq I will sign on to the AI that scrubs behind the stove or autoschedules the increasingly less patient followup emails with people who aren't doing things they said they would.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot @EF@mastodon.bsd.cafe @LaChasseuse@mastodon.scot Also, as someone who worked in and around politics before jumping to the grassroots side of things? A thing people weirdly forget about politicians is that they're human beings with subjectivities, blind spots, and just personal limits. They flinch, they sometimes panic, they take shortcuts, they have really normal, run-of-the-mill human failure modes. It's really less frequent that someone is a puppet to a sinister master, and much more common that they're not playing to their strengths on something and bottled it.

I am starting to be able to use the Doppler radar of AI debates to identify who, in my own life, is terrifyingly lonely and unable to ask for human help.

@debcha@saturation.social I'm finishing off a lit review right now where almost every single survey paper says "no one else is collecting these, or talking about them, or--" and yeah, hindsight is an unfair advantage, but: guys.

In less bemused news: Contributor's copies in the mail this week for ON OCCASION, Coach House Books's anthology of occasional verse.

I'm flipping through the TOC and it's both wide and deep in here. Official release date is May 12th, available both from Coach House and booksellers who love ya. https://chbooks.com/Books/O/On-Occasion

The nice thing about the journal that takes 10 months to reply but also takes 6-10 poems per submission (they also pay well, they legitimately earn that long response time) is that every year you get a tiny snapshot of your working themes and recent-ish output. Didn't *feel* like I had an interesting year in drafting poetry? But: not bad, not bad. #poetry

Supervisor is quite happy with the draft I turned in, got a manageable quote to fix the bathroom grout, granadillas and mangoes and cheap figs are back in action at the Chinese grocery, and there's finally new Taskmaster (oh thank god).

Never has a girl both needed and earned this much #Friday

@Firlefanz @scalzi I read the fake praise, feel good about myself, say "Thank you!" to the air, and then block the sender before I get to the sales pitch. It's turning into a really nice off-label use.

It's a little too easy for anything to oversignify these days, but my dentist's office wanting to take a passport-style photo of me and keep it on file "so we can recognize people and greet them by name"? That's *weird*.

Dentist's offices are not exactly a bastion of good interpersonal boundaries, but: weirdos.

(Fair and balanced coverage: Both my health card renewal and the mammogram office acted like perfectly pleasant, normal people yesterday.)

@chu I'm not trying to pick a fight with you about geopolitics on a Sunday. C'mon, you know me, I'm not Internet Troll Bot. Do you legit want me to unpack it? Because I'll open that interaction up linguist-style if we're like, having the neighbour-to-neighbour conversation and you're legitimately interested, and it isn't just some challenge to pick holes in, but I don't want to do Culture War today.

@chu@climatejustice.social Without minimizing anything going on in the world right now? Seriously, I think they might just have been telling you off because you've walked right past the social cue. I can unpack what they were actually saying from the dialogue you're putting forward there, but I will only do it if you care/want me to, and if you're venting and want me to piss off back to my Sunday, I'll leave it be. But they weren't saying the thing you responded to.

People make a lot of things harder than they strictly need to be, is all -- a dead philosopher and a book of rules are not actually a live requirement for making improvements or change -- and I think the *ways* in which people do those weird little twists and convolutions? Therein lies information. And, well. Potential accessibility measures. #organizing I have no idea if this makes sense outside my head. But thank you for attending this Theodore Talk. 😛

I am not just dunking on the slightly parasitical Marxist kids (I know I'm unfair to them, but it's really uncool to piggyback other people's work while always refusing to do any of your own, and it's a longstanding situation; I'm not by far the only skeptic there). Batting this around with said acquaintance -- who does do things, is involved with unions etc. -- has me thinking about, I don't know. Context starvation? Where the line is in terms of how much context about the world you have where the performance of something is suddenly credible as yes, this is how this works, not the complex, messy, iterative reality of the matter? Like, where is the *threshold* for that: the event horizon where performance gains credibility? It makes sense for those kids because they're always early-20s, so *inexperienced*, and you never see the same ones twice. One suspects very high turnover. But there's clearly a threshold for distinguishing realities from cosplay and this? This seems valuable. #organizing

@rodneylives@mefi.social @c_reider@sonomu.club A lot of people don't watch science fiction with their heads; they watch it with their insecurities. So if he feels small and beleaguered and indignant, he is clearly the smaller, beleaguered, indignant plucky characters. I learned years ago, writing, that the thing you most can't correct for is reader *affect*.

@kcoyle @purple @damkina @mattwilcox How it's done in Canada is that information is updated/harmonized with your tax filings. While there are still bobbles in practice -- and about four ways to correct them both pre-voting and at your polling station on the day of, for all kinds of situations, including homelessness -- file your taxes annually and you're all good by and large. Current address, name changes, if someone died, the works. Source: Have poll clerked multiple elections at all levels.
