RE: @webuiltthiscity@sfba.social

Beautifully done, and so happy that the books got their rock face.

@dltj@code4lib.social I admit I am still not convinced/satisfied. Statements like "pre-release model broke out of a sandbox, reached the internet, and then targeted Hugging Face to try to solve the ExploitGym benchmark." It's the anthropomorphizing of "broke out" "reached" "targeted" "try." In my years in systems I do not recall ever speaking of code/algorithms in this way.

@ink@merveilles.town It is significant that Carnegie Mellon caved, but code4lib, a community of librarians and library technologists, did not. Admittedly, it does help to not be beholden to the US government for your finances/existence, but still... HOLD THE LINE!

RE: @associatedpress@flipboard.com

As we move into a post-text world ... it's more than just reading v. video, it's a huge shift in both knowledge and culture. Video is a more immediate experience; text can be a slow inner dialog, both for the writer and the reader. Think of a book you loved and then the movie based on it. Having both seems preferable.

@overholt@glammr.us I have this vision of a cocktail party where I have to explain this dozens of times, until I just remove it and stuff it in a bag. This should only be worn to very particular social events.

@kiru@openbiblio.social I think that the WorldCat Identities based on data mining the database is (was? getting a 404) a great use of the wealth of data in catalogs. This kind of thinking requires us to stop seeing a catalog as an inventory of separate records but as a rich knowledge environment. Doing so would also help us understand what additional data we need, and what isn't serving us well.

@BBC_News_Labs@social.bbc I am greatly frustrated that news sources, especially newspapers, do not cite their sources. Readers should be able to independently verify the facts. They treat us like children: "Because I say so!"

Replying to
@kiru@openbiblio.social As for DDC/UDC/LCC, it should be possible to search hierarchically, seeing what the library has at each node. We can't expect users to magically zero in on a precise category; classification should be all about exploring from general to specific.

@purple @damkina @mattwilcox so there must be a way to update that database when people die. I assume death records are also centralized? And how does the voter roll know when people move? Is it up to people to notify in some way? Do you have state mandated identities? Oof, sorry for all of the questions!

@overholt@glammr.us What I love is that it's published by the "Experimenter" company, also publishing Radio News, Science and Invention, and "Radio Internacional" (Spanish?). A time when science and science fiction were so very close together.

@stux@mstdn.social I’m not sure why you would say it’s illegal. Anna’s makes everything open for downloading and opposes copyright. The authors of those works could object but they would also very much object to Anna’s having “illegal “ copies and making them available outside of any protection.

@kiru@openbiblio.social It's hard for me to see ISNI or VIAF as data that catalogers need to add to MARC records. I would like to see some attempts to assign those algorithmically. Edward Betts did some interesting coding for the Open Library by combining names and book titles to identify an author.
