Tony Hoare passed away.

This quote stuck with me since I first read it as a teen. It sparked a decade-long obsession with simplicity, later expanded by Rich Hickey's Simple vs Easy.

"I conclude that there are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies."

Fastmail @fastmail@mastodon.social has been operating on bare metal for 25 years. Their planning and (over-)provisioning strategy reminds me of Wikimedia.

Situations where cloud renting is cost effective for medium or large companies are vanishingly rare, and always have been. As with so many big tech patterns, this is a myth held up by VC-backed startups and incentives.

WikiApiary is back online after having been down and overloaded for a long time.

Bawolff brought it back and did a ton of full stack performance work to optimise the whole system. Adding HTTP caching, tuning InnoDB, and more!

@82mhz I can't reproduce this on other iPhone devices. I suspect it has to do with enabling the Lockdown Mode feature. For some reason Apple trusts its MP3 decoders but not its WAV decoders, when this security setting is enabled. Still strange and questionable, but a lot less strange than not supporting it by default!

@nullvoxpopuli@mastodon.coffee A good bubble burster is to rephrase the same question a few times or ask it again 5min later and observe the random seed go down a different branch. The worst cases are short answers in topics where all branches have fairly low samples, so no well-trained path that dominates vector direction (ie no "the most inefficient key-value store ever conceived" to lean on).

@82mhz TIL that Mobile Safari on latest iOS 26 can't play WAV :/ (And given other browsers on iOS are required by Apple to simply embed and wrap the same WebKit/Safari web view, this applies to all browsers on iOS.)

  • Admin spreekt over 3.6 terwijl 3.7 actief is.

How does Code Caching work for Chromium's V8 JavaScript compiler?

Deep dive by Leszek Swirski on how repeat views not only leverage the browser cache for the network response, but also the compiler bytecode. It even includes a limited amount of state snapshot if the initial execution appears deterministic (eg save runtime execution logic for defining and exporting functions).

Good reason to keep library code definitions simple.

Dit hangt af van de postcode/regio. Wat jij beschrijft is meestal door de extra KPN kosten. In regios met meerdere keuzes belichter onder de straat is het goedkoper. Bijvoorbeed:

Enschede (Freedom via Fiber Operator BV):

  • €53 1Gbps

@codepo8@toot.cafe This doesn't work by default (for me) on a clean macOS because I tend to use bash in Terminal.app instead of zsh. However its work on my main Mac, because I enabled this over a decade ago in my bashrc file. It's been so long, I just assumed it's default bash. => How to enable globstar in bashrc (Mac or Linux, either way, it's bash.) In zsh and fish, the globstar option is enabled by default. https://github.com/Krinkle/dotfiles/blob/d986d68d683aabc7e7f30e16f11dd5300bbbc51c/hosts/basic/index.bash#L340
