@jon@gruene.social @stefanlindbohm@mastodon.social In DB Navigator you can favourite an itinerary. DB could cross check when the user saved the trip that then fell apart. This doesn't work EU-wide, but shows that the data could be there.

@bigz @scalzi Pre-Covid we lived in a time where we attended science/ literature conferences in person. Then, Covid made the human contact deadly and everything went online. Now, as a result of AI spam, real conferences & book clubs require direct human-to-human transmission of the invite. So, in a strange way, AI drives people back from digital-only interactions to face-to-face communication. That's not a bad thing... (except for Covid & Co still being out there)

@RantyHighwayman@mas.to Yeah, sorry, bad day in the office when I wrote this. I had another thought over a coffee and reframing road deaths as basically entirely avoidable is a good idea for re-anchoring the discussion. True, there are some accidents where trains derail or busses jump into the Seine, but there's no excuse for people to kill other people at scale, just to get from A to B.

@RantyHighwayman@mas.to Brewed with hops from Hallertau, Bavaria. My grandparents lived there. Lots and lots and lots of farmers growing hops. Their neighbour works in the local hop processing plant in Wolnzach. Maybe he bagged the hops that went into your bottle. Enjoy!

@RantyHighwayman Thank you, I learned what an umarell is. A bit like an anorak in warmer climates. I guess the focus shift makes sense. It would also help if the people directing the works could apply a few mental images: as a driver, can I drive over it slowly? As a cyclist, will I fall off the bike? As a pedestrian, can I push my boss in a wheelchair (or pram) over it?

@fn0rd @cstross You will find developers at banks who are genuinely intrigued by the new tools, and that's good. But a lot of the ones who maintain the dinosaur pens of old iron that run the core banking services with uptimes north of 99.99% take pride in what they do, and that includes telling their line and top management where to shove vibe coding. Sure, this is an independence based on good education, a good salary and strong employment protection, but that's why the middle class, while slowing good things down, also prevents CEOs from shooting themselves into both feet. /end

Replying to
@fn0rd @cstross No, the old rules still apply the moment you start fiddling around with the government's flow of money. Banks pump the money around. You don't change the core infrastructure just because a few hyperscalers offer your IT teams a few million $$$ of free AI tokens. What you do do is that you may try LLMs in the customer interface, maybe in fraud detection and perhaps in documenting your code. There's no way that the next flash crash will be blamed on a few interns who vibe coded a major bank's e-trading core or transaction banking engine. The same may not apply to challenger banks or shadow banks, though.

@cstross@wandering.shop Given the price differential between the investment into a pack of ciggies above or below the counter, the buyers already go for the latter. And somehow I don't think that if your business model is to sell untaxed tobacco products, you're a big proponent of the Challenge 25 programme. (Or one day the Challenge 50.)

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange From looking at a financial services firm, the ship-jumping mainly affects the non-IT parts of the firm. Here's what runs on NIXes: core banking stack (client accounts, payment processing etc.), trading systems, the grids for risk simulations, online banking, settlement systems, reporting engines, data lakes etc. Here's what runs Win: laptops. On these laptops: a browser running cloud services like the GUIs for the above-mentioned services, also Jira but also sharepoint (Which I guess can run on Linux?). And here's the big one: MS Office, incl. Teams. That's it. That's the one big thing that keeps Linux off these laptops. I do not like MS Office, but I have to admit that no Libre Office or Thunderbird comes near it when it comes to the office workflow. However, I wonder if Copilot and Co do not reduce the switching hurdle. If I e.g. ask Copilot to compare two Excel tables and highlight the differences, I no longer mind if it's doing it in Excel or Calc or Sheets or Lotus 1-2-3.
