@nixCraft@mastodon.social @benroyce@mastodon.social @tinkel@mastodon.social I mean, I agree with Tinkel. There are no “souls”, full stop. LLMs have none, but then nor do humans.
But *from the pope’s specific perspective*, humans do. And I’m happy to see him recognize the AI grifters’ BS for what it is, and call them on it.
Sure, there’s some hype he *does* believe. But not this hype. And, in the battle for humanity, I’ll take what allies we can get.

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io I would have loved to see France crush Argentina in the final. As it is? My cheers are for Spain, of course. But I'd even have accepted England ending their 60-year dry spell if that's what it took to send the Argentine squad home in tears.
Mbappé is a true gentleman -- not merely a sporting genius but a man of deep and obvious intelligence and (even more important) admirable character.

Pommes rot-weiß (chips with ketchup and mayo) is very common here, though almost always with a simple, OG dollop of each, not this bizarre pre-combined-but-not-mixed stuff from a tube.
(Which is not, perhaps, optimal in purely visual terms.)

@EUCommission As a general matter, the EU should follow a strict anti-cake policy. But Erasmus participation isn’t cake. It doesn’t require EU or even EEA membership, and UK students should not be penalized for the belligerent stupidity of their Brexiteer grandparents.

Even if they did come to NYC, those people would never venture more than 50 m past the Olive Garden and Bubba Gump's Shrimp Factory in the Giulianified Times Square.
New Yorkers would never see them even if they did come.

@davep@infosec.exchange @Nickiquote@mstdn.social My T.,W.I.M.: Being stupid as dung is a real advantage for a striker. Bill Shankly famously said: "If you're not sure what to do with the ball, just pop it in the net and we'll discuss your options afterwards". A talented and sufficiently dumb striker never suffers from such existential doubts.
As you move backfield, IQ can and should go up. Keepers are often unusually intelligent (but also usually as neurotic as a cat on meth).

They are spiritual heirs to the British ministers who refused to stop food exports from Ireland during the Famine because that would have violated the sacred laws of The Market.

@kirtai@tech.lgbt @cstross@wandering.shop Fast forward. When IndyRef2 comes, I will gladly and publicly encourage Scots to vote Go. It’s about European union, a fight in which I very emphatically have a dog. The EU will fast-track Scottish accession; Spain, specifically and expressly, has stated it will throw up no barriers. Scotland won’t be the seceder. It will be abandoning a seceder to rejoin the Union it overwhelmingly supports. And Europe will welcome it back home.

@cstross@wandering.shop @militant_dilettante@mastodon.social When AfD was formed, it was not a nazi party. Its founders were ordoliberal* economists whose idea was to withdraw Germany from the eurozone to alleviate the Greek debt crisis. (As a € state, Greece could no longer kill debt by devaluing the drachma. AfD figured German withdrawal would effectively devalue the euro.)

They were all (including the founder) purged in about 10 seconds by the nazis and expelled from the party. One of the leaders of the (now) homophobic, economic-populist, xenophobic AfD is a lesbian ex-investment banker who lives in Switzerland with her Sri Lankan partner.

@cstross@wandering.shop I voted No, but should qualify that. For me “instar” says not only “one of a series of physical forms” but also “and each new form shows some significant change or development from its predecessor”. For what you describe, I might use “instance”.
Which is probably why nobody would buy my books, if I wrote any! So: go ahead — go with “instar”.

Credit where due, BTW. I found this on a Facebook Friend's page; he had shared the post of a group called "The Other 98%", of which I know nothing, other than that this is good advice. I had to drastically paraphrase their text to fit Mastodon's character limit, but that's the gist of it.

@cstross@wandering.shop @kirtai@tech.lgbt But if Scottish friends asked what I thought, I said: don’t leave. You value EU membership; you won’t have it if you go. Spain will certainly veto, and you’ll have a cold shoulder from the rest, as the EU is not in the business of encouraging bits of its member states to secede.

@greene Thanks, but really, I’m just passing it along, as are all the people boosting this post. It *is* good advice, though!
I grew up very close to a beach and learned this as a little kid. Most people don’t grow up near beaches and, too often, don’t learn it. Hence my eagerness to pass it along — it really can save your life, and it’s stupidly easy (though counterintuitive).

@joelmartinez @dawni But a few years ago, visiting NY with my family, we spent a day on the beach in the Hamptons. (The south shore of Long Island is basically one big beach, 100+ miles long.) We didn’t see any of this, but on the Monday we learned that five people drowned off the beach we were visiting that day, fighting against rips. They were all strong, fit young men.

@joelmartinez @dawni The idea being that the sand being sucked out to sea turns the rip a bit whitish and, I guess, pus-like. Which, yeah, sometimes.
But not always by any means. And anyway, nice try, but like it or not — and no longer being a giggling snotnosed prepubescent brat, I don’t particularly like it myself — it’s sea pussy.
