@LALegault@newsie.social @lennybacon@infosec.exchange sometimes I see the argument that there will be domination by techbros (Musk, Zuckerberg, etc.) instead who are unfortunately still rather young. I drink for the death of these three too, but we should stay vigilant. And indeed always vote for a woman whenever possible. It'll not happen in our lifetime that a matriarchy could compensate for the millenia of patriarchy.

@r3pek@mastodon.r3pek.org @kde@floss.social @sovtechfund@mastodon.social if you manage to log in to MS 365 with Konqueror and open OneDrive there, you can replace https with webdavs in the URL bar and it'll give you the folder view.

I don't think there is any other environment where this works as smoothly as KDE.

(This all relies on WebDAV being able to use the cookie from the original login process.)

@Gammitin I have quite a similar system here. Are you using Firefox (I think I see the icon)? It would seem very slow. I have good experience with using Pale Moon and it seems even better with Konqueror. (Possibly Falkon might be fast too.) Most games shipped with Debian should run as well. Are there specific advantages that MX has over Debian? Curious to hear about your experiences!!

@chemoelectric Schwartz means "Black" in German, so I would imagine various families independently have this family name from one another. There are also people named "Black" and "Zwart" or "De Zwart". In some cases they might be related. In my case Schwartzenberg is the Dutchified version of Schwarzenberg (as used by German/Austrian ancestors and descendants of branches that are still there). Hopefully there's a way to capture the information in books that would crumble. That indeed happens.

@chemoelectric ah yes, then I understand where you ran into alignment! I understood you do prefer PowerPC though? I'm curious why. You know about the workstations from Raptor Computing? It's great you have such projects despite such a long time disability! The article is nice yeah! Here in Europe, German/Austrian names are more common, but I don't often end up chatting like that with someone with such a similar name :)

@osmocom@fosstodon.org @sysmocom@mastodon.social this would seem massive news to me. I've never looked into buying a 4G device for myself, but now if 2G would stop working one day, I could just use a USB SIM reader and with any internet connection I could make and receive calls again? This seems to be a complete game changer to have a mobile phone number without relying on any proprietary software. (Apart from what's running on the SIM.)

@nil@furry.engineer @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net many thanks for looking into this. I won't be able to try it soon, but when I do and run into this, I'll be sure to reach out!! You seem to be using the program for the SunPCi III whereas I have a SunPCi II. Possibly they are different. I still had the Ultra 5 on my desk in 2010-2011, so possibly the check isn't in that version or I indeed didn't boot up the card after 2009. There is relatively little point in emulating that card btw. (A 2nd QEMU x86 instance will help more.)

@nil@furry.engineer @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net I see where you're coming from but basically you'd end up hooking up a second QEMU instance with some rather limited and peculiar hardware. The SunPCi II board for instance is just this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SiS_630/730 on a PCI card with some tricks that allow rerouting the display in a window and using disk images stored on the Solaris filesystem. You'd be dealing with emulating the SiS 630/730 and even if you do that, you then already have a superior independent stand-alone emulator :)

@chemoelectric @jbc @itsfoss I wouldn't say that. Torvalds has indicated that he does not like to be involved in the naming matter himself, but does consider usage of GNU/Linux or Linux/GNU to be more professional when talking about the combination.

@anthk quite a bit of firmware is non-free even when a typical system with Linux-libre, it's just read from a ROM instead of uploaded by a driver into the chip's memory upon initialization. The big issue with using random firmware blobs is that people become accustomed to their OS updates delivering new versions of random blobs and there's no insight or control in what's going on there. If we all use a time-tested blob from many years ago, it is the same as dealing with a ROM blob.

@eff@mastodon.social this is the start of the guide: """ Download location: Google Play Store, Apple App Store System requirements: Android 5 or later, iOS 13 or later """ Obtaining a device that happens to have one of these operating systems and setting it up so it actually respects you, *is* overwhelmingly difficult.

@xot most governments seems to be moving to Matrix... which we can all use just the same? I never used either WhatsApp or Signal myself, so I wouldn't know if there's a particular reason to look into either of them. They are both centralized which I believe is ultimately flawed.

This is really amazing to see!!

@chemoelectric how do you see ARM in that light? Regarding Solaris/SPARC I do have an old Ultra 5 here. Would you suggest I look at learning it's assembly language? @luciedigitalni@aus.social is anybody aware of translations of this book? There is quite a bit of material in English that elaborates on Meta's problems, but I observe that people that do not speak English are much less aware of these problems. I guess the gag order prevents the author from pursuing that it gets translated :(

@chemoelectric amazing you learned so much about that history! Quite a bit of territory switched countries multiple times within a century there. Maybe they met in the Austro-Hungerian empire? Ukrainian and Polish are similar enough that two native speakers of one and another can understand each other about 80% of the time. So Polish and Ukrainian would seem more likely than German in Russian as otherwise there would seem to be a huge language gap.

@chemoelectric @jbc @itsfoss I see, I would say that the popularity of Linux does speak for it, but indeed I'm not technical enough to judge such aspects. I think from the perspective of Torvalds, at this point hardware design and support should tailor Linux instead of the other way around. This is different from how it used to be and where nowadays other kernels might become more interesting. Given the recent HURD improvements, possibly it will become an interesting contender down the line.
