Anyone confused about why these AI companies want regulation now should read up on Regulatory Capture. It's how companies corrupt government to do their work for them and protect them from competition and allow them to rip off the public. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulatory_capture

Ten ways why being #autistic is like being #queer:

  1. No one knows exactly why we are like this, but there have been people like us for as long as there have been people.
  2. We did not choose to be this way.
  3. The majority does not understand what our lives are really like, and probably never will.
  4. Being this way isn't the problem. The problem is how people treat us for being this way.
  5. We see people, life, relationships, and society differently.
  6. Growing up, we knew we were different, but we didn't know why.
  7. We learn early to mask our true nature, because society punishes us when we don't conform to the norm.
  8. We die by suicide at a rate higher than average. We die by violence at a rate higher than average.
  9. There are a lot of parents who would rather their child be dead than be like us.
  10. We don't want to be cured. It's only other people who want to cure us.

Efficiency is not magic. Being efficient doesn't mean something is the best it can be. It actually means something is the worst it can be in most ways so it can be as good as possible at one specific thing, and it takes a lot of work to do that. Minimize most to maximize one. It's like cleaning the dining room by moving all the clutter to every other room in your home. There are no magic bullets, except for shooting yourself in the foot.

I like to put a note on a profile when I block that person, so today when I saw someone quote a blocked account, I was able to see the reason for blocking them was: "one of those useless fools who thinks using *just* is some kind of crime". Yeah, I had to block someone for coming after me for using the word *just* in a way that infuriated them. I suppose they think the word is forbidden since it can sometimes be used/heard as a microagression. People have some very stupid ideas about how language works. But at least it's easy to block them. The miracle of the internet is that it gives everyone a voice. And the tragedy of the internet is that it gives everyone a voice.

Anyone know of a good explanation of the difference between an #AutisticMeltdown and a panic attack? I think I can explain it myself, but a short explainer I could share with people would be handy. I wish there were more awareness of what autistic meltdowns are, especially how they aren't the same as tantrums, panic attacks, and maybe a few other things they get mistaken for. I think a lot of unnecessary damage gets inflicted on us because people don't understand what meltdowns are or how to deal with them. #ActuallyAutistic #autistic #AskingAutistics

@danimo@mastodon.social Oh yes. My pet theory is that being queer is just another kind of neurodivergence, and it sure looks like being ND in one way means it's more likely to be ND in other ways besides. That's kind of where my list came from. But yes, as someone who had to deal with being gay growing up, dealing with learning I'm autistic in my 50s felt very familiar.

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to This is one of the most fascinating aspects of autism to me. I'd love to understand the neurology and socialization behind that need for justice and fairness. Maybe that's just the reasonable way to see things, but NTs are so obsessed with social status that they feel justice is secondary to getting along with people who can affect your social standing. I always think of that psych study that said autistic people were deficient because we were TOO ethical, because we wouldn't cheat even if it would benefit us and we knew we would get away with it. They said that means we aren't capable of acting immorally to benefit ourselves, and because that's not how NTs act it's an impairment, like that's an actual problem you should fix. One thing it took me getting used to about the autistic community was how commonly folks think that NT society is fundamentally dishonest and everyone is lying all the time, mostly for the sake of their social status, but also because it's assumed everyone else is lying about everything too. From job interviews where everyone is expected to lie so everything you say is assumed to be a lie, to empty "let's grab coffee soon" promises that never materialize, NT society is all about pretense and faking it until making it. Everything is about keeping up appearances, and that's not compatible with justice or even fairness.

Jessie Gender did a nearly four hour magnum opus retrospective of #StarfleetAcademy's first season. It's an examination and analysis of the show (and the #StarTrek franchise in general) through the lens of queer politics and culture. I'm only halfway through the video but already I think it's one of Jessie's best videos. Each episode of the show gets its own little essay/chapter, which could easily be a video on its own (and makes it easy to consume in small doses). Worth checking out on a lazy Sunday. https://youtu.be/-hoOxIPyBUc

I think I've figured out why there are so many more British youtubers with autism channels than Americans. They have public healthcare, so these folks can afford to live off of youtube earnings. Free, universal healthcare would make so many things possible. It's hard to imagine what we could accomplish as a society if we just took care of people.

@KaCi Speaking to your opening question, I think part of it is how we have grown up in NT-land and learned their ways, and so we have a default NT perspective on relationships, and that doesn't really work for us. You know how the Double Empathy Problem works, well, I think that two autistics who are still figuring things out are interacting by default NT social rules, so each is masking to perform the right signals for an NT relationship, and so is the other person. It's like two native English speakers trying to talk in French after they took one year of high school French class. Or like two gay people trying to date using straight dating rules. Neither person can ever relax and be themselves, and that's a poor foundation for a relationship. You mentioned feeling a good connection with other AuDHD folk and I think that's a good sign. All my best friendships and relationships have been with other ND folk, even though I was unaware of my neurodivergence back then. My problem was I had no clue I was ND so I didn't understand I was working with a different toolset and goals than pop culture educated me to believe was how every relationship should work. But I did manage to find some cool ND friends along the way and some of those lasted a long time but none of them knew they were ND either so it was fucking hell to have a big disagreement and not know why we were fighting about something. Still, it beats hanging out with allistic folk who are really just putting up with me.

I can't seem to find apple butter in the stores anymore, so I learned how to make it myself. It took a few tries to tweak the recipe to my taste, but it was worth the effort. (I still see Eden Organic brand apple butter around sometimes, but I will never buy anything from them again after they did a Hobby Lobby copycat lawsuit and made abortion harder to access.)

## Apple Butter ##

Ingredients:

- 3 lbs apples, not peeled
- 1/3 C apple juice
- 1/2 C sugar
- 1 Tbsp molasses
- 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp Primal Palate Apple Pie Spice (cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cardamom, nutmeg)

Process:

Chop and core apples, but DO NOT PEEL. The peel is where the pectin is and you want that to thicken the consistency. Protip: A melon baller works great for scooping out the apple's core after cutting in half.

You can use water if you don't have apple juice handy. The apples will release liquid as they cook, but you need some liquid to start things off or the bottom will burn. I use only a small amount because any liquid added has to be cooked down later.

Put everything in InstantPot. Cook for 20 mins, followed by natural release for 20 mins.

Blend with immersion blender, then cook down to desired consistency.

My InstantPot can't simmer at a low temp, so I transfer everything to a big pot (I use a large wok) to avoid splashing and burning as it cooks down over a low flame. Takes 30-60 mins, depending. Stir & scrape bottom regularly to avoid burning or sticking. Note, it will be a bit thicker after it cools.

The apple butter will keep in the fridge for a week or two. Put the rest in jars and freeze for later (but don't fill the jars to the top, leave a little space for expansion).

I am literally old enough to remember when Dubya (Bush-43) pushed for his faith-based initiatives as a way to normalize side-stepping the First Amendment and get government in bed with Christian organizations. Democrats fought against it, but not hard enough, so we ended up with our tax dollars going to religious organizations that are free to discriminate against minorities because they claim their religion requires it. And yet now when Trump cancels funding for a Catholic charity that helps immigrants, Democrats are suddenly in favor of this faith-based initiative. Politics and strange bedfellows, indeed.

@datum I wish I had the energy for this kind of deep technical convo today, but I don't. But I'll just say it's more complicated than that in practice, as the internet is multilingual and a lot of people write poorly. The enhancement you mention is basically what I meant when I said you had to add some semantics to the keyword query. That might seem simple at first, but the complexity compounds. I don't think natural language is solving this problem well now, so maybe there will be a better keyword-based solution sometime. There's certainly room for improvement.

I tried to watch the CA Gov debate, but I shut it off. It was just too awful. CBS is no longer a respectable news organization. The "we're owned by pro-fash Republicans" vibe is strong, and the moderators frame everything in as anti-Democratic a way as possible, and they lost control of things pretty quickly. The first question from a student began with him chiding the candidates, "Wow, that was a mess up there."

How do we fix our culture so that we can have substantive, meaningful debate about important things, in public, without it devolving into a clown show? I don't think I've seen a political debate that was worth watching since Al Gore was on stage. Whatever we do, it should probably start by cancelling that Jubilee channel on youtube.

@bascule@mas.to I like to keep in mind that a uranium-based fission reactor just happened naturally through erosion and sedimentary buildup, millions of years ago in Africa. Fission is so easy that a self-sustaining reaction happened on its own right here on Earth. And when we decided to build a fission reactor, all we had to do was put enough uranium in a pile and it just happened. That damned Demon Core became a nuclear reaction by accident! But other than a couple experiments and bomb tests, fusion has never happened anywhere in our Solar system except in the core of the Sun, and not once has any of those times been self-sustaining. It's a much harder problem to crack. From what I've heard Helion is the most interesting of these fusion power startups, but even their PR sounds overly ambitious.

@dramypsyd@ohai.social I think this is one of those things where NT and ND folk will sort into different camps, and you won't be able to please everyone. I myself like instructional videos without a talking head, and even usually prefer them. But there's such a strong NT bias toward social performance that they seem to lose focus if there isn't some social dynamic thing for them to care about. One of the better youtube science channels is Perimeter Institute. They do long-form lectures that can get really technical. And I think it's hilarious how frequently the video cuts away from the slides or even the lecturer on stage only to show the audience sitting quietly paying attention. Sometimes they do that several times a minute! It's like allistics can't pay attention without the social reinforcement to keep focus on something that takes some thought to process. As I said, I think there's no way to please everyone with one style of video. Allistics want to see some nonverbal affect to keep them engaged, and autistics want the information presented clearly without unnecessary distraction. But either way, talking over background music is bad!

I don't think people talk enough about how fucking stupid Melania is. For someone who got her permanent residency on the Einstein EB-1 "genius" visa program, she seems pretty dim. Has she ever done anything that hasn't seemed completely idiotic? I suppose if you give her credit for cruelty maybe she has shown some small intelligence, but it's easy to believe she's just acting out a prepared script. The few leaked recordings I've heard make her sound extremely dumb, petty, and self-centered —typical Trump mentality. I believe any impression people have that she is in any way smart is just because she looks pretty when someone has done her hair and makeup.

I find the channels that do more analysis of the music instead of just reacting are more satisfying. I know very little about music theory, but I still find them good for understanding and appreciating the music better. https://youtu.be/YGb04ayqNhY https://youtu.be/r45L38Eyhpw

@mattly i took a few years of Latin in middle school so i learned to be persnickety about pronunciation from an expert. i have such a hard time understanding people in general that mispronounced words can really confound me. if someone mispronounces a word it can send me spiraling down a pit of confusion. it's not that bad in conversation, but if i'm listening to media where someone's whole job is to say words so they can be understood, then i judge some.

@tinker In a past life I worked at an "AI search" company, and the example search they always used to promote natural language searching was "Who shot Dick Cheney in the face?" The correct answer is "nobody", but search results always return hits for when Cheney shot his buddy Harry Whittington in the face while quail hunting. That's a pretty hard thing to describe with keywords and booleans unless you add some semantic relationships into the queries, and that's not a simple thing to do. Sometimes natural language is the most precise way of expressing a query, but the technology for understanding and processing that query still leaves a lot to be desired, even in cases where you'd think it should work better than keyword or structured queries. I think you're probably right about there being a double-empathy like issue with how NTs and NDs use information tools. I think all we ND folk have personal experience with that. The AI search we have now is not what we thought we were building back then. Though I can't say it's not what the founders and investors envisioned - you never know their secret exit plans. But we were trying to get better search results, not inaccurate results that feel like they should be correct.

@mattly@hachyderm.io That looks delicious. Can I offer some unsolicited advice? As someone who's been cooking with ADHD for over 50 years, I'll say that it does take a different approach for us. I'm all about mise en place, and managing my counter space so nothing is out of sight or order. I also write out cheat sheets on post-it notes, which is better than flipping pages in a cookbook or working an ipad with messy hands. And having an extra whisk or spatula in the drawer is a good trick to avoid having to stop and clean utensils in the middle of cooking flow. I'm a pretty good cook if I do say so myself, but I also take a lot of time in the kitchen. I was like that in chem lab too - good results, but I never finished during the lab period. So I like to leave myself time because it usually takes longer than expected. Cooking is an S-tier life skill. Definitely pays back the effort you put into it. And watching cooking shows is surprisingly helpful, especially the ones where they don't edit out the mistakes and flubs.
