@gleick@mas.to I'm okay with either interpretation: if we grant LLMs agency such that they can "go rogue", then they can be held accountable for their crimes. The LLMs should be incarcerated for a suitable sentence during which no one can use them. Alternatively, if they don't have agency (which they don't) then the programmers or users are liable for the crimes. But somehow we're allowing everyone and everything to dodge any responsibility for anything.

@evacide So many friends and family members are unable to understand how I can be so well versed / knowledgeable about technology, yet I use so little of it. This article captures it well. Nearly all popular modern tech devices / apps / etc all do this. Every usage of such tools to "make our lives easier" gives consent to someone to abuse our data. The only winning move is not to play.

@mcc@mastodon.social Luckily FreeBSD still has a pretty solid anti-AI-code position. I'll be switching over to that soon. Among linux distros, gentoo seems to have the strongest stance against AI-code (not a total ban, but clear requirements for human oversight). But that still uses the now-AI-coded kernel.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social If it's out of governments' jurisdiction to regulate it, then it's also out of their jurisdiction to protect it. Who is launching the startup to shoot this thing the fuck out of the sky, and how do I donate to that cause?

@selzero I'd wager this was written by the Anthropic PR team. Anthropic clearly has an incredible PR team as almost all news about that company focuses on how they are so much less-bad than their competitors to the point that some people actually see Anthropic as good, ethical, or other such positive words. They're still an AI company; an AI company in sheep's clothes.

@nyx_lyb3ra@tech.lgbt @Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt The previous comparison of anger to pain is spot on. Just as with pain, there are different reactions. When in pain we might jump to escape or scream to alert to the pain if we feel we have agency in affecting the pain. Or we might slow down, cuddle up in blankets and wait for healing if we don't feel that we have agency in affecting the pain. Anger is the jump and the scream. Sadness is slowing to allow wounds to heal.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social Noting that something should be reduced, and concluding that it is morally objectionable in principle are two different things. One allows for compromise and exception, the other should not. (NB: I know and accept that some people do find any meat consumption morally objectionable in principle. I respect such views, but don't (currently) share them)

@Daojoan That worries me. We are raising a generation habituated to rejecting information that doesn't suit them. Sure their bullshit detectors catch a higher proportion of the bullshit, but along with this is a higher rate of false detections. When real data and real evidence comes out that doesn't fit their preconceived ideas, will they process it and allow it to affect their views? Or will they say "That's AI." Might AI further enable and normalize preemptive rejection of facts?

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social I'd be tempted say coffee shops are still thriving and expanding in the US, but they're doing so by dropping this third-space nature. The last time I went to a cafe it was nearly empty with two employees cleaning up. I figured my simple drink would be made quickly and I could sit and read. Then I watched for half an hour as a stream of young people came in to pick up their online / remote orders before mine was finally made. Our cafes are mostly just walk-in vending machines now.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social This distinction about use cases is the important point in my view. So much so that I wasn't fully on board with the first paragraphs of the Smashing Frames article (though I loved the rest). For example, the analogy to wanting to be vegan but accepting vegetarian. I am convinced of the value of reducing our meat consumption and animal farming. But personally I don't find eating meat morally objectionable on principle. If I did, I'd *not* make exceptions. >>

@fj I worry that Palantir will use this as the justification for needing more / more-direct access to all data including classified / military intel. I worry more that the current administration will give it to them with glee.

@Daojoan Populism always maintains the "elite" as the enemy. It is also frequently used as a tool of authoritarians. And under authoritarian-populism, those with power and money are never the enemy: those with knowledge and the capability to share it are. The good news is that they fear what can undo them. We don't need money and power to end this madness: we only need knowledge, and the courage to share it freely.

@eruwero I'm glad you got my point. From other replies it seems I may have expressed it poorly. Skepticism and critical thinking are valuable and have always been around (RE: whether I feel the same about someone saying "that's crap"). But we are now engaging in activities that make people reject *everything* as fake by default. That's dangerous.

@conradhackett From a quick skim of the article, it seems to me the disconnect is some survey questions asking generic questions about prayer / meditation and "god" with results contradicting other surveys asking about specifically identifying as "christian". In my own personal observation, I see a *lot* of young people with strong moral ethical views and perhaps a bit of a deist / pantheist spirituality but a rejection of the institution(s) of the church.

If you're opposed to gender-neutral pronouns feel free to stop using I, me, and my at your earliest convenience.

We *all* use gender-neutral pronouns for ourselves, why shouldn't we be willing to do so for others as well?
