@dk but more epicycles means more lines of code which means more productivity which means better "programmers" which means "better" software, more money, etc, etc...

@scalzi "He sees this as a temporary problem for AI providers, though, as agentic AI becomes more entrenched in daily people's lives, it'll become harder to switch, as the bots should eventually have all your shopping preferences, aspirations, and emotional profile mapped out —perhaps even better than yourself." I really don't understand how these people can just openly state that all this is just a scam to get all your data and use it to modify your behavior so you do whatever the fuck they want, buy the "right" products, vote for the right candidates, etc., and they simply get away with it. Why doesn't every journalist interviewing such an "expert" immediately pounce on that and seriously question their premises? This is a fucked up "utopia" they are envisioning. And they write about it as if it was the most normal commonsense thing in the world and they are so smart for seeing this kind of future. #surveillancecapitalism #surveillance #capitalism #fuckai #noai #utopia

@noheger@wien.rocks I thought good design and a nice user interface were their only selling point. Great job fucking that up! The icons are also hilarious https://tonsky.me/blog/tahoe-icons/

@akareilly the license is the bare minimum. But not all (free) software has to be "good", it can just be a hobby project not intended to be usable by everyone without modification

@kravietz I feel a bit guilty for laughing about this ridiculous bed thing. Unfortunately it's not a joke and some really dystopian surveillance bullshit but come on, who thinks they need crap like this?

@oberstenzian @OccuWorld a conservative proposal: >$1 million: 4% >$2 million: 40% >$3 million: 100% maybe not ideal but good enough (but tbh 4% is ridiculously low)

@mathieubaiget@piaille.fr @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange it's simple really, if you don't need cookies because you don't need to track people, then you don't need a banner. If people can login to your site you might need a cookie to keep them logged in, but that's "legitimate purpose" (not exactly sure if you need a banner in this case, I wouldn't think so). And that's about every use of cookies that's not some surveillance capitalist bullshit IMO.

@hosford42 @detritus @jmcclure @Daojoan @emilymbender also, I think calling general BS "AI" is really a sign of how normalized "AI" is, and kind of reinforces that (even if the connotation in this case is negative). This is not meant to criticize the children of course :)

@hosford42 @detritus @jmcclure @Daojoan @emilymbender learning about BS early is great, no matter what it's called, I agree with you on that. What I was referring to is when stuff that is not actually BS, but you might think it is (because it doesn't sound plausible or you don't like it or whatever) is still claimed to be "AI". That also happens without AI, but it makes it easier to argue (to yourself or others) because it's so easy to create text or images or videos that seem very realistic

@hosford42 @detritus @jmcclure @Daojoan @emilymbender I also think it's problematic. Sure LLMs produce incredible amounts of bullshit but if everything that doesn't fit in your worldview becomes just "AI", that's really dangerous. And in this case it could be about bird meat, which is actually dinosaur meat, and that fact could spark the children's curiosity if it was taken seriously. The point is AI makes it easy to dismiss basically anything because some things it produces can seem very real

@mathieubaiget@piaille.fr @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange but are all those plugins really worth it? Is it really necessary to use them or are there better alternatives that respect the privacy of people visiting your website? How much more money do you actually make by using google analytics or other services? If you use all kinds of services that collect data then it might not be that simple, but that's not a problem with the GDPR but with those services/plugins.
