@noplasticshower@infosec.exchange So I have some really good friends from Pennsylvania who moved here & lived for... a long time. Then they uprooted again & moved to... the TX Panhandle. I used to go see them on occasion. Anyway, they procreated & made a son [oh f$ck, I just realized how old their kid is now...]. They decided to name him Logan. Of course they take pictures & such -- dunno about motion photography. But when the kid started walking... well, you can figure out the rest. :-)

In a coma for a week, hospital for 2 weeks, out of school for ~6, medication for several years. Disease was probably eastern equine encephalitis transmitted by a mosquito; there are other mosquito born diseases too.
3 buckets cost me $9. 6 dunks cost $7. Neighbor did it too. I didn't use anything else but a free stick & free handfuls of hay from a neighbor. Got rid of probably 98% of our mosquitoes.

@beadsland I think about this a lot. Every once in a while, the deliberate degrading of images or other data enters. Some of it I hate, especially when it makes the work in question worse: why is this scene so dark or this sound so bad? Your aesthetic choice simply made things bad for me. But sometimes you're just stuck no matter what.
Where I think about this a lot, & sorry if I get too far afield, is memes. Why do some memes look *better* if they're degraded from the source material?

@beadsland Any effort to map aspect ratio a:b to aspect ratio c:d is going to fail, except in trivial cases. It's like mapping a globe to a map: you're SOL from the get-go. But both movies & TV eventually effectively lost to computers & just became data for corporate overlording.
To return to your original point: just go look at how many aspect ratios there are & your limited options about getting it on a screen. Did it affect content? Absolutely. How? Yeah, that's a deep well.

@donaldball I guess I can't describe to you then how sick I used to get of sports. I only have one housemate now — my wife — so it's a lot better. But I used to be able to feel the house shake on the second floor from my housemates celebrating a win on the first. And if I left the house to, say, go to a bar, guess what was going on?
Maybe you're right. But maybe sports shouldn't have such a big piece of public discourse either. & I can guarantee you some people get sick of it.

@noplasticshower I'm pretty sure there isn't a lot on this block that doesn't have wisteria on it. There are a couple lots down the street we call the Bamboo Forest. Now the Bamboo Forest has tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ailanthus_altissima?wprov=sfla ) coming up in the middle of it. Then there's the regular English ivy. It's like an invasive species paradise. 🤣
I may have finally killed the tree of heaven coming up next to the front porch. I think it's only taken 5-10 years.

When I look at video now, I see people *leaning into* obscuring the image. But it think (3:4 at 262.5 lines) × 60 frames/sec in black & white was gonna suck no matter what.
My pet theory: we, specifically the U.S., developed TV too early, culturally & technically speaking. It should have been digital from the get-go, but that was impossible.
