#Infosec has anyone pieced together how Microsoft was able to associate this hacker's #GDID with the websites they visited? I've been looking around and all the "explanations" I've found seem like overconfident guesses https://www.ghacks.net/2026/07/12/microsoft-confirms-windows-gdid-device-identifier-that-cannot-be-disabled-documented-in-fbi-case-filing/

Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled, Documented in FBI Case Filing - gHacks Tech News

Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a persistent Windows device identifier called GDID, first publicly detailed in an FBI federal complaint against an alleged hacker.

My conspiracy theory is that a contributing reason we've lost the war on spam is that platforms (e.g. Google, Apple) have an interest in taking on a role as a your personal bouncer because it makes it more difficult to leave their walled garden

You basically can't self-host an email server these days. Having a phone line is useless if you don't have spam call protection from a major company. This is a bad situation we've found ourselves in

We live with the knowledge that there are uncountably many small tragedies happening all around us. If it were the case that each of us felt every small tragedy as a bit of sadness, then we would immediately be overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all. Therefore there must be some threshold, some smallest unit, of sadness we're capable of experiencing, below which we are unaffected. In this essay I will describe a "quantum feels theory"...

@ZachWeinersmith I'm convinced a lot of AI discussions along those lines are less about making real predictions for the future and are more about the speaker trying to convince others that they understand the future In turn, I think that "I know what's going to happen" attitude can come from a few different places. It could be genuine arrogance, trying to gain influence over others, or a fear of being "left behind"

Tethering to my phone sucks ass for some reason. I'm looking to buy a dongle I can stick a sim card in for a data connection but it seems like this is a product class that just doesn't exist. The closest things I can find are "mobile hotspots" which look like they're just smartphones without a screen that you tether to, which doesn't inspire confidence they'd actually be better than my current connection Anyone got a solution for this they like? I'm down to throw money at the problem #AskFedi

@Neblib @kemotep @dlakelan I don't worry about it for private services. For public ones I'd get a $5 VPS and run an nginx reverse proxy I'm probably being overly paranoid but TailScale's "no really it's a free lunch, trust me" model doesn't inspire confidence. Setting up a VPN on OPNSense is more difficult but not substantially so, so that's what I do https://tailscale.com/blog/free-plan
tailscale.com

How Tailscale's free plan stays free

Tailscale’s free plan is free because we keep our scaling costs low relative to typical SaaS companies. I know, it sounds too good to be true. Let’s see some details.

@nik @daandemeyer @pid_eins but in either case this is an extra flag that you need to append to the command to use this non-standard behavior, so I don't think it's an undue risk and I think it makes sense to describe using it as a conscious choice Personally, having to chown files I created with sudo is a constant frustration so I'm quite excited to get my hands on this (2/2)

Do any #Linux understanders know how to configure GTK to NOT use a dark variant, ever, as seen in the inspector window?

Edit: fixed by prepending env GTK_THEME=Adwaita:light to the startup script for this application
