@virbonus@sueden.social I've changed fuses on several T-series and the most often issue is due to users dicking around with the display cable while the battery is connected. sorry I can't help you with local talent, but it's literally one SMD fuse to replace so any phone repair shop can do the job. the board has to come out though, or hot air will fuck up the speakers and other plastic. so when you find someone, tell them you'll bring them the board solo, might get you a discount because they don't gotta dis/assemble the whole shebang. here's where it was located on my T490, might be similar: https://defcon.social/@yuman/116595139783394614 it's the right-most one above the display connector. afterwards, when you're done, put some good adhesive tape on the display connector so it doesn't get loose.

the dude I got it from assured me a Very Serious Place told 'em the display is toast and that's why they're selling it, so didn't bother checking. but now, this warrants another look. first off, not only is this is a *touch* screen, it's a 400+ nit 8-bit one; was expecting the factory standards which are like 200ish 6-bit. so, looked up where the backlight fuse is and thankfully it's on the exposed side of the motherboard; had the same thing on a T480s, and that one was on the other side of the board. 2/

@janbeta@chaos.social no, I watched a few of your videos and hence the "omg not this one too" reaction. free advice, worth what you paid for it - unless the irony/sarcasm is visible from orbit, maybe hold off on it. then again, what do I know. take care.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca you stay away from anything apple-approved, you don't want none of those. look up youtube videos with the same subject, should be more informative and to gauge the work needed. immediately disconnect the battery. keep track of the screws removed and where they're from. take pictures of the process as you go along for reference. slow and steady, you can take a week to finish it, no rush. even if you fuck something up, you're playing with a $20 laptop so breaking something isn't a major thing. if you get stuck, holler. good luck!

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca I've worked on buncha those old bastards, ask if you get stuck. as a first step, go to ifixit and review the disassembly instructions for your model. also, what's your model, 2012 covers four different macbook pros in addition to one air variant; some are easy and cheap to work on, others not so much. off the bat, the keyboard is usually fixable, the audio out less so.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca they are all macbook pro and intel :) you got mbp 13 and 15 unibody, and then 13 and 15 retina, all came out in 2012. the former are easier to work on, the latter less so. look at the model number on the bottom A1xxx

@janbeta@chaos.social in case you care, "you won't believe" shit makes me a) never ever consider watching the thing and b) seriously consider blocking the author for ever. same goes for pulling stupid faces in thumbnails and any and all usual youtube boost tactics.

@veronica@explains.social as soon as it gets an installer from this century with sane defaults (laptops != desktops) it's ready for newb endusers. I'm working towards that goal as Ubuntu hasn't been usable for a long time

@oisin@mastodon.ie the fucking shingles thing! if you're still pondering. got the fucking thing in the eye, had no clue what I was dealing with and treatment started super late. result - permanent eye and nerve damage, lingering effects years later. get the thing!

@oisin@mastodon.ie sadly, stace rocks a c2d and I don't think it's advisable to invest any kinda cash into fixing it up. were it a 2012 as posited, that woulda been a viable spend as those can still be usable; this thing, I think is time for an adieu, barring some learning experience angle.

@oisin@mastodon.ie turns out it isn't a c2d (she read the wrong thing) it is a 2012, so that thing is worth upgrading and preserving. I get all my shit used, and them prices are okayish, about $0.10/GB nowadays for old 2.5" SATA drives. no idea what's happening with NVMe and friends, my hardware can't run those. edit: if you like, check out my pinned posts, got a coupla refurbish projects published.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca uh, so that ain't a 2012, someone took you for a ride. core2 duo laptops are unsuitable for any kinda work nowadays, even if you decide to invest many times the laptop's worth into expansions like RAM, SSD, and the like. running linux on it (mint recommended) is a no-brainer but investing any kinda money in those things isn't viable. although replacement parts from junkers should be cheap (like $5-10 for a keyboard) the repair would net you a sub-optimal device. if you're into the thing same way some dude is into fixing broken '87 mustangs in his spare time, by all means, have at it. but, as an investment, hard pass.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca that changes things a bunch; still haven't told me the model number, its at the bottom of the laptop, goes like A1xxx and then there's the EMC number, four digits of those. if you let me know what those are, I can give you your options

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca ok, you got a good starting point

  • a1278 parts are widely available; specifically used parts from junkers, local repair shops, etc.; unless you're made outta money, skip buying parts new, e.g. from ifixit and the like
  • those models have the LAN port, so you can run wired LAN until you figure out the broadcom wireless drivers, which is a smallish hurdle in linux, but nothing too complex
  • HD 4000 graphics are enough to run any linux DE of your choosing, Plasma, Gnome, etc., you're not limited to mint versions only
  • those models can take up to 16 GB RAM and can run up to two SSD/HDD units; with a good battery, those are formidable devices that can last you a long time
  • finally, those models use standard philips screws on the bottom, so you can open it easily, take a pic of the inside and we can go from there
  • don't buy the keyboard just yet as it's possible other stuff is amiss
  • related, what's the exact issue with the keyboard? and the audio?

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca 1) did the thing suffer any liquid intrusions, coffee, juice, rain, whatevers? it's possible just a keyboard replacement can fix it but it can also be due the keyboard connector on the motherboard getting gunked up, in which case the replacement would be for naught. 2) short of trying to pry out lint and other crap from the audio port (with a toothpick and blowing and such), not much you can do there. a replacement port is easily attainable, but requires SMD solder work, which I don't think is feasible. the easiest "fix" is to get an USB audio card, cost like $5, and use it thus.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca the gunk I'm referring to would be on the inside, from dried juice, coffee, preventing electrical contact; no external cleaning can get to it. ok, then all you gotta do is get a keyboard and hop to it - the ifix instructions say there's 38 steps one way, you gotta do that twice (disassemble/assemble), sooo... also, just took a look at the instructions, they are for an early A1278 model and yours is different, so a lot of stuff will be different than pictured. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Unibody+Model+A1278+Keyboard+Replacement/153661 not sure this should be your *first* interaction with DIY repair? maybe get with one of them repair cafe things if you got that locally and seek out someone who has done that sorta stuff before? seeking out commercial solutions, like a repair shop that does this for a profit would be vastly more expensive than the device's worth. anyhoo, if you get around to it, open the bottom cover, take a pic and send it when you can.
