I did do some PDF editing in neovim (PDF is a semi-binary format, but you can turn off all of the compression and encryption and then can more or less edit parts of a document in a text editor)

I'd say I am self-taught. There is no community. Not anymore. Just me and software that some company paid to be made. Alone. If I am lucky I get source code, otherwise it's time to pull out the binary & dynamic RE tools.
