A mathematician with nothing to prove.
I've just been reminded that I once created a competition for the MathsJam Competition Competition.
You had to decide which of three pre-Raphaelite pictures of people asking for hair products was best arranged -- my entry to the Competition Competition was the Compare Titian Comb Petition Composition Competition.
It's probably for the best that I left it on the train.
Impressed by the 12yo figuring out @mscroggs@mathstodon.xyz's advent meta-puzzle pretty much on his own. He certainly took fewer guesses at it than I did :-D
After discussions at open mic last night, I've been persuaded to put my one attempt at recording an album (back in 2002, on a steam-powered black-and-white four-track) on Bandcamp:

I guess I'm getting the band* back together.

I had a fabulous evening at open mic last night. Not many performers, but there were some terrific ones. I ended up doing two sets (I did Do You Do Any Dylan? in the first and the host took umbrage, so I did Tangled Up In Bob in the second. It has my favourite stupid joke in it: "So many CDs that it's tricky to keep track / I have a Saddam Hussein storage system: I keep them in Iraq") and the evening ended with the host persuading a brilliant-but-shy singer, David, to busk Whole Of The Moon with her, and it was just the perfect end to the night.
I can't quite articulate why it was such a good night, but the international situation is desperate, as usual, a lot of the human spaces are being taken over by slop, and a bunch of renegades got up on stage to express themselves and connect with each other. I kind of feel like that's what live music is for.

Correction: this is in fact issue 4F. I thought "next issue is 50!*" and didn't think it through.

Marathon stat from tomorrow's DMFT: the Weymouth Parkrun course record is 14:47. Sawe's run on Saturday was equivalent to beating that by about 40 seconds, then running another seven-and-a-half parkruns at the same pace.

Suppose Sir Joseph had scored (r ) runs in ( n ) [completed] innings before this score, and call the before-and-after averages (A_0) and ( A_1 ).
Then:
- ( r = A_0 n )
- ( r + 50 = A_1 (n+1) )
So ( 50 = n(A_1 - A_0) + A_1 ) and ( n = \frac{50 - A_1}{A_0 - A_1} )
The RHS is all numbers we know, and we get ( n = \frac{0.01587\dots}{0.0000835\dots} \approx 189 ) and ( r = A_0 n \approx 9453 ).
