@mntmn@mastodon.social Maybe it's better not to do audio but use a digital encoding, like the Philips P2000 did back in the day. I'd have to do the research but I'd expect you can get higher bandwidth that way.

@lumecolca@kolektiva.social Interesting question. I have zero interest in FPGA based recreations of classic systems. I'm not against them, they serve a purpose, but I'm just not interested. I do like to play with FPGAs though. It's a lot of fun implementing simple CPUs from scratch. But if an FPGA based system breaks, then that's it. You'll have to replace the entire FPGA, which often means you just throw away the whole system snd replace it as a whole. Repairability definitely suffers. Troubleshooting old hardware is much more fun.

@gourd Well, I don't particularly miss the experience of having to compile the kernel to get things to work to be honest :)

@gourd Well, this was before kernel modules, and certain drivers would crash your kernel if you didn't have the corresponding driver so they would not be compiled into the default kernel that came with a distro. Could be graphics, sound, whatever. As such, the default kernel was fairly minimal typically and you had to recompile to enable drivers for your specific machine. Took hours to compile, and more often than not you would have configured some combination of settings that would crash the compilation halfway and you could start all over.

Amazed that the tin usenet news reader is still around and updated and how it is a thousand times better than any GUI I've used over the past year since I'm running my own news server again.

I've been pondering the question 'Should I get into RC2014' lately. I'm not sure why, I initially dismissed the idea as 'nah, that's not proper retro computing'. And it isn't, not really. But it does appeal as a permacomputing project, so I pulled the trigger and ordered a kit. I'm looking forward to exploring CP/M on it, an OS I've never used before but have wanted to use for years now.

There was some discussion on comp.os.cpm about adding an LCD and keyboard to it, which I found interesting in terms of permacomputing. Would make for a nice low-power computing platform. This is going to be fun!

@gourd In the beginning there were no online repositories. It all came on floppies and later CD ROMs. An update would be a new CD ROM. For most software, you'd find a source tarball and compiled it yourself, after having downloaded, compiled and installed all its dependencies manually. Oh, and we'd have to compile our own kernels first before we could think about configuring X11 :)

Wow, what a difference. After more than a year since I installed friendica, I added memcached. It went from unusably slow to just completely normal and usable!

Why didn't I do this right away? Probably because it's poorly documented that this is even possible.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy I finally fixed the performance issue on my server. Yay!

Hey all / hej allihoppa!

We in the comrade data association Konstellationen bought a 1U server that we want to use to host our services (for example our mastodon instance social.spejset.org/) for the greater good. We're looking for a place in Stockholm to rackmount the thing and connect it to the internet. We're a non-profit and are looking for free or cheap. Do you have tips? Maybe you have a server room at work that you can think offering a unit in, or perhaps you're working at a hosting company that might consider helping us out? Let us know!

@tomjennings I think you usually start with a reference design from the manufacturer. At least, that's what I've seen the HW designers do in previous jobs (although in my last job we made the chips ourselves, so there we provided the reference design). It's all very finnicky, especially with all the high speed busses that go out to chipsets and memory etc... I bet @mntmn would know, they're doing that stuff day in day out for the MNT range of laptops with pretty hefty ARM-based chips.

@virtuosew I've been running my own for more than a year now (iirc), and it's been super-low-maintenance. It just works. I run it in docker, and updates are supersmooth. Of course, you could go to one of the servers that everyone else uses (makertube comes to mind), but that sort of defeats the whole 'fediverse is centralised' thing :)

@botolo86 It varies from person to person I guess. For me nostalgia is definitely part of it. But also comprehensibility. I particularly enjoy 80s and 90s era machines, where you can understand and fix the whole machine, can get to know every detail of its function. And there's also the joy of seeing what people did (and still do) with such limited resources. Plus, I can finally own that Amiga I could only dream of when I was a kid :)

Looking for cool retro computing images (portrait) to print and hang on the wall of the retro room but all I get is AI slop. I need some human recommendations! Old ads that are mostly visual, artistic photography. I'd happily pay as well, as long as it doesn't involve sending money to the US etc...

Please boost for reach?

What 8/16 bit DIP microprocessors are still being produced? And I mean microprocessors, not microcontrollers. The 8051 is still available in some variants, but that's more of a microcontroller. I see hints of 8088/8086 2nd source chips still being available in relatively small quantities, produced by Renesas/Intersil. But are those still actively being produced or is that just new old stock? There's also a hint that there's still production on-going of the 65c02, but the DIP variant seems to have been discontinued. #RetroComputing #Electronics
