@eevee@slime.global Eevee you're good people but I'm really struggling here. "You don't want instabans" sure ok but the instaban actually happened, the person who did the "this you?" post got instabanned. The nazi DID NOT get instabanned. "Yeah because they're rude" come on we don't need to fall for this shit. Yes this is an incredibly unfortunate incident but what this is doing is putting the KDE project on a straight course down the "people are yelling at us about nazis, wow that's rude and scary. The nazis aren't yelling at us. I guess we join the nazis" pipeline. But making excuses for how "oh these people just aren't online sickos like us" is not the way to fix that. Pretending that the person/people at the KDE project doing the response on this isn't being incredibly disingenuous here is also not the way to fix that. These people need intervention from trusted friends who understand what's going on but if those friends do not materialize then what the fuck are we supposed to do?

@eevee@slime.global I understand that your stance on this is formed based on your life-long experience and doing a lot of thinking about it, but I also have life-long experience of being bullied for both not fitting in /and/ for being a squeaky wheel who speaks up when everybody else is staying silent to keep the peace and have done a lot of thinking about it and I think you can't just say "this is always toxic bullshit". That throws every kid that gets punished for standing up to their bully under the bus, and you're joining the war on bullying on the side of the bullies. Yes this kind of shit can be abused and is abused all the time and as a society we are incredibly vulnerable to it. But my stance is that we have to fight the people who would punish people who are standing up to call a spade a spade. Yes "calling a spade a spade" is something nazis love to say. But that's because they're the ones playing this game! We can't opt out of the game. Opting out just means letting them win.

@eevee@slime.global I read the big blog post and all the comments on it and the guy is asking for people to act like mature adults and then continuing to obviously do the opposite of that. He responds to a few people with "thank you for the feedback" but he also straight up ignores any of the feedback that matters. He's also picking and choosing about what the KDE project supposedly cares about. "We can't survey every single KDE user so obviously there's no way for us to form a view of what the end-user community wants" come oooooooooooon.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems I was going to say you're being unfair to mjg59 but I recently showed code I wrote to someone and they said "that's a magnificent hack and I hate it" and that was exactly the reaction I had hoped for, and then we merged that code because it solved the problem. They say creativity flourishes best under constraints and utilitarian code is nothing but fighting constraints.

Today is trans day of visibility and since many trans people in the current times may prefer to be not visible, I would like to say that that's a bullshit state of affairs. The assault on trans rights happening in many western countries (not to discount rampant repression and state violence occurring against sexual and gender minorities in other countries in regions like Africa and South-East Asia) is not just bullshit, it's a heinous evil perpetrated by groups that want nothing short of genocidal fascism, and have chosen trans people to be the most convenient scapegoat.

Trans people are real, trans children and youth are real, they deserve full human rights including legal ID if they so choose and medical support based on informed consent and nothing less. They deserve full participation in public life and they do not owe any specific performance of gender expression to anyone.

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz longer than people can go without welfare / income assistance payments I reckon. I'm sure you can scrape together a strike fund for some pretty funny small actions, but the reason we need a welfare state in the first place is that there /is/ no other way to organize such a huge amount of wealth transfer (I mean, there are some alternative models, but I don't see any non-government actor with the ability to coordinate and mobilize more than what is needed for very small-scale actions here.)

@tj Also also - I have spent a lot of time and money on brand-name headsets (Sennheiser, Bose, Sony, JBL), and ultimately all of them sucked in some way. So now I go to aliexpress and buy truthear gate IEMs for 20 dollars and a 5 dollar bluetooth receiver. Ten days after receiving the first set of IEMs I ordered a second one as a spare. Been using that at the gym and on the bike for two months now, and I have no complaints. The IEMs are solid. The bluetooth receiver is nothing to write home about but the value for money is hard to beat.

@tj (I also, years ago, got two free replacements of a set of Anker sports earbuds when I complained that the battery life was nowhere the advertised 8 hour active runtime. That was also before Anker became fully enshittified. I kept recommending Anker to people after that but I stopped a long while ago - it appears that they are mostly in the business of slinging white-label crap for ridiculous prices now)

@ehashman@cloudisland.nz @icing@chaos.social I think you're nitpicking here. The US immigration system is a bureaucratic nightmare. If this guy was not legally in the US why did he get a work permit? It makes no sense that you can be deportable and have legal status at the same time unless you've intentionally designed a system that lets you arbitrarily abuse people, which absolutely applies to the US immigration system. Nobody is arguing that people who aren't white are being disproportionally targeted and are suffering worse abuses.

@wildrikku@mastodon.gamedev.place using sensorless homing (stall detection) might be more reproducible than manual calibration? Whenever I use glass or metal print beds, I visually gauge the distance between the nozzle and its reflection in the print bed. I think that is more accurate. A real metal shim set would also be more accurate than paper. Setting valve gaps on engines is done by feel with metal gauges - that's gotta be accurate enough for 3d printers!

@benno@eigenmagic.net whoever figures out how to stop centre-left / social-democratic parties from seeing only those further left as political enemies is going to usher in world peace. (if you think about whether the people who direct the political efforts of centre-left / social-democratic parties are just ideologically blinded or if there's rational motivations at work it leads to some dark places so I recommend not doing that)
