Was a geek and fitness enthusiast, then a brain haemorrhage kinda ruined my day. Now I'm trying to get back on my feet and figure out who I am.

"When people get to do what they love most, rather than being forced to squander their lives on tasks that they do not care about, it takes a lot less to feel prosperous. By contrast, those who seek to profit at others’ expense find that no amount of material wealth is enough to satisfy them." #MutualAid #Commons #GiftEconomyhttps://crimethinc.com/2025/06/06/mutual-aid-the-commons-and-the-revolutionary-abolition-of-capitalism-revisiting-the-difference-between-mutual-aid-and-charity

@KathyReid I feel like Facebook is a good marker for 'oops, too late', but I'm not as confident of what the early warning sign might have been. I usually like to follow Bill Hicks in blaming most of society's ills on 'marketing'... or more specifically, in the context of the Internet, advertising-driven surveillance capitalism. So maybe when Google Ads launched?

@Darkphoenix@universeodon.com I am a long way from California (!) but at a quick search I see that Katie has pledged not to take money from corporate PACs, so my theoretical vote would go to her. Plus there are too many guys in politics, so in the absence of any other criteria I would have picked her anyway.

@PetraPhoenix@beige.party Huh. I removed the kitchen door when I moved in, because I didn't see any point in having one - I never cook anyway, so it just got in the way of fridge snack raids. But I have an absent-minded flatmate now, and disabilities, and a very stupid cat. Maybe I should put that door back on this year. Thanks for the prompt to think about it. I hope you're as okay as you can be when such a difficult date comes up in the calendar.

@ScottishGreens Weird headline premise, isn't it? The Greens and SNP are both liberal centre-left parties, while Labour is way over on the authoritarian right these days... why would anybody who supports the Greens be choosing between voting for them and Labour, instead of between Greens and SNP? (I'm in London, so maybe I'm missing something here.)

@Hex I constantly underestimated how stupid the average person was for the first 48 years of my life. Then I had a massive brain haemorrhage and lost 1/4 of my IQ, which puts me a whisker above 'average' now, and it's all a bit clearer. I'm kind of surprised we didn't blow ourselves up sooner to be honest. We are apparently a very stupid species. On average.

@dave As I understand it, Rust is probably the skill to acquire then, because it's memory-safe and hence becoming increasingly popular. Although I think it's mostly being used at the kernel driver level in Linux currently rather than app level, but I guess take a look and see what you find that looks interesting to you 🙂

"Forty years on from the world’s worst nuclear disaster, Chornobyl is still contaminated with almost half the caesium-137 that exploded from the Unit 4 reactor in 1986, as well as much longer-lived hazards such as plutonium, tritium and americium. But according to some experts, the long-term effects on nature may be less than if the area had been left to humans..."

“The ecosystem in the exclusion zone is much better than it was before the accident,” Smith said. “It’s been a very powerful demonstration of the relative impact of the world’s worst nuclear accident, which is not so big, and the impact of human habitation, which is devastating.”

@SpencerWolfe@mastodon.social I have had uniformly good experiences with running Linux on older Thinkpads. Ubuntu MATE for the last few years, Ubuntu for 10+ years before that, and Debian and Red Hat before that. Started on Slackware a VERY long time ago 🙂 but wouldn't recommend that these days! https://linuxblog.io/thinkpad-laptops-linux-guide/ has some advice on which models might work best, but I've had over a dozen over the years and the only one I ever had trouble with was a brand new flagship model, that the drivers hadn't quite caught up with yet. The older stuff should all have really solid support, in my experience.
