Reading through “The History of Hell” and what’s amazing to me is how everyone — believer or unbeliever — has a narrative of Christian belief that’s not so much based on the Bible at all.
But rather on an extended universe made by saints, scholars, prophets, and kings, who variously interpret, cope, confabulate, and write downright fantasy.
Because that Bible is shifting sands of meaning and metaphor.
Yet, as the good book says, the foolish man built his house upon sand.

It freaks me out a little because how does one know the parts grew together correctly?

1) “A lot of sad, hurly-burly doings”
— “The Mysteries of Udolpho” by Anne Radcliffe.
2) “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him … ”
— “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare
3) “‘Well you can’t help that,’ said the cat. ‘We’re all mad here. I’m mad, you’re mad.’”
— “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll.”
(This was a real struggle to choose)

Today is Severe ME Awareness Day. As many folks here know, my girlfriend has severe ME resulting from Long COVID.
I can only experience it from the outside. But what I know is that It is not simply “being really tired.”
It is debilitating. It is incredibly painful. It is hell.
It is often not believed.
But it is real. And those who have it deserve all our love, support, and advocacy.

Why did they roll this out before a weekend?

@intransitivelie@beige.party Mermaids reproduce in a vampiric fashion, pulling young sailors into the water, enveloping them in sea foam to create a kind of chrysalis. In the sea chrysalis the human males undergo changes to their biological sex and their lower extremities.
When they emerge, the mermaids feed them on caviar until they are strong enough to live on their own. These young mermaids have no memory of their former lives. I only know because an orca ruptured my chrysalis.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I think that’s the thing with edgelord PR. And we’ve seen it for years with our president. People hear these things and say, “oh, they can’t be serious, they’re just asking questions or starting a conversation.”
Or it just gets drowned out in the next edgelord moment.

Tabloid Belief
I was too young to ask if she believed,
The papers that spilled at her feet,
With headlines of bat boys and elvis, miracle cures
and UFOs,
Her feet awash in that sea of ink
Weighed by heavy shoes,
those thick stockings rolled
like elephant trunks,
There was little else in that bare floored space,
But the scuffs of six children she raised alone,
Her husband taken by agents of the state,

Good morning from Grays Harbor where the thunder has ceased for the moment and the cat was quite snuggly.
We are supposed to have a day of rain, as if this were the actual PNW, much needed by our plants and me.

The eSIM is a stupid invention. The whole point of a SIM is that you can transfer your number to another phone if, for instance, a phone dies.
You know what you can’t do with a dead phone?
Transfer an eSIM.

@jpaskaruk@growers.social But is the answer you get correct and worth the bottle of water it took for you to get it? If the content was scraped from someone else’s work, and they’re not getting even the site visit or attribution?
A tool is not just a tool. The ethical nature of its source matters.
Ivory piano keys from elephants. Blood diamonds from exploited human labor.
You use the AI answer, you use the data center. You can’t just decide the two are unconnected because you don’t like the system.

Today’s neighborhood mystery: A whole-ass semi truck came to take away this one small plastic container from a house. It took a pallet jack, so clearly it was heavy.
I’ll take right or wrong answers for this, but please differentiate.

Unfortunately, a lot of those folks are concentrated in big cities. Gerrymandering and the electoral college give the true believers a disproportionate edge in politics.

So, #TechQuestion: Do wifi routers ever show false positives for new devices on a network?
Last night my XFinity app notified me an iPhone 17 had joined our WiFi network. We do not own an iPhone 17.
We use a lengthy, randomly generated password (it’s not WINSLOW), but I reset the router and changed to another password — just to be safe.
Just a random blip? Or a nefarious actor in our sleepy town?

@lienrag@mastodon.tedomum.net @mattsheffield@mastodon.social It’s odd to pair up “don’t believe in jesus” and “won’t return to earth.”
I grew up in a liberal presbyterian church, and there wasn’t a lot of second-coming talk. My parents were devout, but I doubt they gave much consideration at all to Jesus returning as an event.

@Darkphoenix@universeodon.com I once went to pick up some furniture from a guy. And while he was helping me tie my hatchback down, he told his wife, “I was reading this morning about a knot that always comes untied no matter what.”
I was thinking, “please, don’t be thinking about that knot right now.”
