Further, thanks to @sdwilsh@social.ridetrans.it, I learned of the Detesselate workbench for #FreeCAD. One of its many functions is a macro similar to my Mesh to Solid except that it creates a Part Design body with the converted mesh inserted as a Base Feature. That is one step beyond what my macro does, but is often my ultimate goal. Some of the other edge loop and sketcher tools are pretty cool too. Perhaps the best feature is the mesh placement tool that is EXTREMELY powerful for repositioning meshes relative to the origin. I wanted to add this feature to my macro, but this is WAY better than anything I would have implemented. You should check it out: https://github.com/DesignWeaver3D/Detessellate

For the #BikeTooter crowd of the road/gravel/cyclocross persuasion (because of combo brake/shifter levers on drop bars): Do you ever use your ring finger to shift to a harder gear? Most of the time I use my middle finger. However, I can say that I definitely do this when accelerating from a stop, especially at the start of a cyclocross race, because of grabbing the hoods so hard while sprinting.

Glad to have this bike back in action. It hasn’t seen much use since #cyclocross season, mostly due weather and darkness, but it also needed a new cassette, chain, and chainring. For the time until next CX season, I put some new Kenda gravel tires on it because I’ll occasionally take it on some trails or rough roads. It’s nice to have options. This is probably my favorite bike that I own. (I call it the 17-pound Wonder)

Even though this is Mastodon, I’m willing to bet that most of you were not kept awake last night because your brain wouldn’t stop thinking about tensegrity structures.

I think my lunch today was a challenge to see how many ways I could eat chickpeas: there were whole chickpeas, hummus, and falafel.

A delicious challenge, gladly accepted.

I should clarify that this macro doesn’t do anything beyond automating the conversion steps to get from a mesh to a solid. Then, if desired, automating deletion of the source mesh object and an intermediate shape object after the conversion given that they’re no longer needed. There is nothing magical that will repair bad meshes or any other errors. After you’ve run the macro, you’ll have a solid that you can use for Boolean operations or you can drag it into an existing Part Design body to become a base feature for further modification. For best results, make sure your mesh is manifold, or repair it by other means before attempting conversion. #FreeCAD

@darthkali@chaos.social I’m often baffled by experienced CAD users not getting along with FreeCAD, especially the latest version. How do you feel the workflow is different from the commercial offerings? What do you feel is the biggest issue for you? I am certainly a strong FreeCAD advocate. I know it’s not perfect, but it has gotten significantly better in the last few years. I’m a daily SolidWorks user, and I had no issues transitioning to using FreeCAD. There are times when I wish FreeCAD could do certain things, but they are mostly convenience tools, not something that prevents me from getting the result I want.

@ashleygjovik Not every engineer is a great manager, but the best engineering managers are people that started in the trenches, doing the actual work. It’s hard for some to balance the big picture ideas with the day to day details, but those that are best at it have done the day to day detail stuff and understand why it’s important to the big picture.

@kboyd@phpc.social @trevorflowers@hachyderm.io You’re welcome! I hope it helps. I was literally working on the code as I was trying to help you with the other thing this morning. It wasn’t complete until this afternoon… I have a few other features I want to add, but I wanted the base functionality out there and working as a start. Let me know if you have any issues with it or feature requests.

This is definitely a question more for road/gravel riders, but how often do you ride in the drops? #BikeTooter #cycling

@IoanSaid@toot.wales I find this fascinating because all of my bikes are #SRAM, and I don’t think my index finger ever touches the shift lever. Maybe I have a weird habit of wrapping it slightly onto the brake lever?
