It's 21ºC in here, which seems like it should be warm enough, but it's also 78% humidity, which means I'm basically in a cold bath. I feel sweaty AND too cold. Gross.
Good UK feminist health news:
"The investigation found that the ICB had denied women NHS funding [of tubal ligation] based on the risk of “regret”, a criterion not applied to men seeking vasectomies. The ombudsman concluded the policy was unfair, inconsistent and based on subjective reasoning, and that women were not being given the same opportunity as men to make informed decisions about their own bodies. [...] Regret and the availability of alternative contraception are no longer considered valid grounds for refusal."
UK petition: Ban the sale of domestic gas hobs and ovens
We support a ban on the sale of domestic gas hobs and ovens to help the environment and public health. Ohio’s publicly owned MetroHealth study in July 2026 found that replacing gas hobs and ovens with electric ones improved asthma symptoms in a way that was as good as some asthma medications.
This proposed ban would not include industrial gas hobs and ovens, nor emergency equipment.

The feature request for "ability to disable replies" is now 7.5 years old. 😭
It's so fundamental that it is bonkers to me that it hasn't been implemented.
People on Github are saying we don't have it on Mastodon because it's not present in the ActivityPub protocol yet, so the AP feature request is here: https://github.com/w3c/activitypub/issues/319

'In recent years, there has been a rush on the internet to supply image descriptions and to call out those who don’t. This may be an example of community accountability at work, but it’s striking to observe that those doing the most fierce calling out or correcting are sighted people. Such efforts are largely self-defeating. I cannot count the times I’ve stopped reading a video transcript because it started with a dense word picture. Even if a description is short and well done, I often wish there were no description at all. Get to the point, already! How ironic that striving after access can actually create a barrier. When I pointed this out during one of my seminars, a participant made us all laugh by doing a parody: “Mary is wearing a green, blue, and red striped shirt; every fourth stripe also has a purple dot the size of a pea in it, and there are forty-seven stripes—”'
An excerpt from "Against Access", an essay by John Lee Clark, read here: https://audio.mcsweeneys.net/transcripts/against_access.html Just under 5,000 words.
Today in grammar, instead of "that's what's happening to me", I accidentally said "that's what I'm happening", and you know what, that basically works doesn't it.
I accidentally overwhelm myself SO EASILY 🙈
I want a YouTube compilation video of Shawn and Gus from Psych doing "quick, look natural".

Some data from the Electoral Reform Society.

The mind-blowingest part: "In Sutton, the Liberal Democrats received almost every seat on the council (92.7%) on a minority share of the vote (43.7%)"
If you live in the UK, write to your MP and quote these statistics and ask your MP if they will support a switch to proportional representation in future elections. https://www.writetothem.com makes it super easy and free.

The attached post is doing numbers on my bit of the Fediverse today. It's basically the same argument I've seen over and over on social media, and I just don't think it's true. (Please be aware though that I am furious about generative AI and would like it to be fired into the sun.)
Any medium or tool can be used by an artist to put a piece of themself on display for others to judge and critique. I think this includes generative AI. If a human is choosing what to ask the program for and what to keep and how they feel about it, and other people can look at it and decide how they feel about it, that's art, isn't it? Part of what makes it art can even be that it is made using generative AI, and the way that makes the artist and the observer feel.
Yeah, it might be art that is disliked because of the medium, and it might be art that causes harm of various kinds, but it is still art.
There are a lot of very valid ways to criticise generative AI and the people who are pushing it, but this isn't one of them. It's like trying to turn people against a fascist politician by saying they're ugly and fat instead of criticising their policies and actions because they're a fascist; it says more about you and how you think about people than about your target.
If you have ever looked at a picture and liked it, and then found out it was AI and felt ashamed, the "AI can't make art" propaganda has kind of worked on you. Yeah, AI can't make art. A person can use AI to make art though, and it is still art.
The anger and disappointment are valid, but misdirected. The below targets and harms art and artists and observers out of laziness, because it's easy and we like the idea of dissuading people from using generative AI by telling them it's bad art or not "real". If you want to take a stand against generative AI itself, do that instead.
UK nerds, I need your help! I have this shopping list for a 3D-printed project:
4 : M3 x 40mm hex socket screws
6 : M3 nuts
2 : M3 x 16mm Flat Countersunk Head Screws Socket Cap
1 : M5 x 50mm Hex Socket Flat Head Screw

Do you have a good go-to online shop for these kinds of bits and pieces?
